Getting closer to the root of the problem...
Garage reports idle not controllable via idle screw - does nothing tangible. Turning it does not affect RPM at idle.
Failed MOT due to emissions, it is running far too rich they report. This perhaps points to the MAP sensor.
The orange engine management light is now on.
Have asked the garage to do the diagnostic check which shows which sensor has failed.
They have the workshop manual which shows them which flashing light combination relates to which sensor.
Had a look for MAP sensors via Camskill just in case but nothing doing...
ETA disclaimer - may be fuel pressure regulator - I'm not sure

The emissions came out at 9% on the MOT.
Speaking with Nathan this looks like the cam belt may be out of alignment and would explain the idling issues, etc. also.
I just asked them to check this out first, most likely next week. They have the side-on printed diagram showing the two connection points.
Leftover from the engine build I guess. Main issue now is that garage run busy++ so will take a little time.

Oh for fk sake! They have the damn workshop manual and they get something as simple as cambelt alignment wrong?!?!?!!! The inlet cam will be one tooth out then and performance will be sluggish and fuel consumption will be st.Speaking with Nathan this looks like the cam belt may be out of alignment and would explain the idling issues, etc. also.

If you're still taking this to your mates garage, tell them to stop being clowns and check the bloody paperwork when they do things.
They are just plain wrong regarding that screw, that is it's one and only function and certainly does affect the idle (they did short the diag terminal didn't they?).
It shouldn't need advice from me or Nath to sort this out.
I think what they are seeing with the idle screw is that some underlying problem is making the adjustments appear random and pointless.
I gave them the documentation but they didn't read it. They assumed the engine was set up correctly in the first place from the folks who rebuilt it.
This doesn't need specialist knowledge from yourself or Nath, for sure.
Garage am using is managed by a family friend - only problem is that they overbook their work so no time slot until next week sometime to have a look at this.
If it takes too long may take to main dealer to sort out once and for all, patience a little thin now...

Im afraid the main dealers are usually useless. Many of the Daihatsu mechanics these days will not have worked on a GTti.
One suggestion, Put the car on a trailer and send it down to me for a few days! There are people on Ebay who transport cars surprisingly cheap.
I paid a bloke with a insured trailer £150 to get my current GTti from Fleetwood (nr Blackpool) down to Swindon.

That's an offer!
For my sins I am trying to get the garage I am using familiar with the car so I can use them regularly and they make financial sense compared to other local options.
But if they can't crack everything this time I will be taking you up on that. One year on and I am still not 100% sorted. Not going to give up though

Never was it truer that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing
Car passed MOT today, emissions at 1.9% and the crazy hunting has stopped.
Oil change done, some final work and will have car back mid next week
The engine warning light is still on however. I will check the diagnostics when get it back. My guess is I just have to switch that off (if nothing noted as failing), may say how in workshop manual.
Next step is new console install (unscratched), uncracked indicator lens and rear seat lifter. Almost have those bits from FB folk.
Alan's dog hair is still a bit of a concern however

I wish hairy carpets were my only problem. That sounds wrong somehow though.
Anyways -
Got the little bugger back today...
Hmm, the garage didn't check the diagnostic codes. Oops
Chance for me to learn stuff
I have diagnostic code 5 and code 11.
I rotated the A/F adjuster each way as per p46/7-2 in the troubleshooting guide and the check engine light stays on. I had the air blower off by the way.
I went to step 7-4 but realise I probably don't have the computer check sub-harness gadget so I can't check any voltages on the A/F adjuster circuit.
Where do I obtain one so I can take this further?
PS I have driven the car on motorway and in town and it doesn't appear to be running oddly. The idle is bang on and stable.

Last night unplugged battery and left for 3hrs. Plugged in and tried - still got the error code.
Nathan suggested turning the AF screw to around half way, disconnecting and connecting the battery then switching the car on.
I did that and the warning light is now OFF
First commute went smooth - still running it in but ATM feels as solid running as my MX5 which is a first
Backfiring/popping it was doing due to overfuelling (?) is gone too.
+ :fingerscrossed:

by unplug it, I was talking about the ECU, not the battery. Nathan suggested turning the AF screw to around half way, disconnecting and connecting the battery then switching the car on.

Sounds good though!

You must be fed up of it by now though having had all those problems.
When I bought it I was taking a pure punt. It didn't pay off and cost me a fair few quid and grief. I can't complain cos I knew what I was potentially getting into. At last it seems I have the chance to drive it without dodgy symptoms and it's worth every penny. If I didn't have such useful help from yourself, Jim and Nathan etc. I would have probably driven it into the harbour.

I'll give you a Grand for it.
Noooooooooo! I guess you haven't seen my garage bills and receipts? Next stop body shop in the Spring...
ETA: will be taking flying visit to your part of the world on Oct 8th-9th btw
Not headed to anywhere in particular, just wanted to quick visit you guys for helping me out, also have a chance for a bit of a road trip darn sarf since the car is currently operational.
We can take this offline I guess. Maybe Jim is around too - not sure where you guys are located exactish.
