Did it in 31.59 lol

Pace generally was about right but misjudged slightly and had to inject a bit of pace in the last 100m so I can't do that next week for real

First 2k felt slowwww so I think 30 min pacing is probably about right, so assuming next week goes ok I'll do 31 mins in a few weeks and then 30

30 is a common target for a lot of people. It's a good time to pace as the maths is easy per km. wink

I went to Swindon on Saturday, nice course (though would have been nicer without the wind), but starting around the middle of the field it took me over 20 seconds to cross the start line, and at least a km before I could really run at my own pace free of the crowd. Finished 221 out of 459 so I must have started in about the right place.

I think quite a few parkruns are in danger of becoming victims of their own success as numbers increase beyond what their course can really handle. My usual parkrun changed the course slightly last year to spend longer in a wide field before getting on to the narrower canal towpath, but it's still pretty crowded once you hit the towpath a good 500m's in. We're pushing 500 most weeks compared to 200 or so when I started a few years back. Plus car parking is starting to become a problem.

The idea is that you take time off your previous parkrun PB wink

But once you've done the couch to 5k and park runs do you really have no interest in trying to go further or off road?

If just doing 3 miles faster and faster is your thing fair enough .

I think Parkrun is happy to create these problems of too many runners as it shows that the concept they started with is working. I guess that some will progress to other distances, but 5k is a long way for most people and I love that Parkrun is having issues with overcrowding, parking and too many people wanting to get fitter.
I have 2 friends who have just managed to crack 5k and both are only looking to do 5k, but do it faster

I dont know from a c25k point of view but I do all sorts of distances and races and still go to parkrun every week for a 5k blast to see how my fitness is improving.

It is for me, 5k is a long distance, everyone has their maximal distance to run. I do do the Manc 10k every year, but that is something that I have to build up to.

To the vast majority 5k is a long way. Imho most of that majority will just run 5k every week and that is enough. Better than fook all after all.

I do this too - If I want to cover a longer distance on a Saturday I still make an effort to do the local parkrun and then follow up with a longer run, maybe running to and from the parkrun itself. Plus it's always a good place to chat and work out who's driving if there's a race or training run on the Sunday.

I don't think parkrun have any thoughts that people "graduate". I run all distances but still turn up at parkrun as often as I can - usually running with my 8 year old but occasionally having a blast round.

Did a steady parkrun on Saturday followed by a new marathon PB on Sunday.

This coming weekend will be tail running at a different parkrun - whilst dressed as a Roman centurion for their 100th event.

Usain Bolt's done OK just doing 100m faster and faster smile

For some people parkrun is the only running they ever do and without it they'd be on the couch. Most people who do longer distances will also parkrun as part of the training and you don't do a marathon every week.

Crowding is a nice problem to have, it proves the idea is good.

I think parks tend to reach a natural limit - our 2 big local events have stopped growing at about 450, occasionally getting 500.

Creating new events to reduce crowding has been a complete failure - there's a dip in numbers for a while but very quickly the original event gets back to the old numbers and the new one fills up. Rinse and repeat - Bushy was getting crowded, 800? events created worldwide but Bushy still gets 1000 a week!

Yes, I see the invite to ambassadorcon has arrived. Not sure who thought the double bed option would be a good idea though wink

Venue looks fine. Typical corporate conference type place and easy to get to.

A few people go with partners (when both have a parkrun role)...There isn't a tick box for 'Double is fine, please allocate someone to share with me' wink

A friend is going as well, so we'll share - hopefully a twin room, not double!

Did PR with my 7-year-old and my 10-year-old daughters on Saturday. Let the 10 head off into the distance while I jogged round with 7. Didn't expect her to do it, but she managed the whole thing without walking at all. Time was 36-something, but she was still 40-odd places from being last.

Yes, I can see how a double is fine if you are both ambassadors (or similar) but as two randon people sharing its a but strange.

I have ticked the double (not sharing option) as am not keen on sharing a room with someone I dont know and I dont know anyone else who is going.

With my RD hat on I have no issue with this but, with my ambassador hat on, just watch out as some events really don't like kids heading off into the distance and finishing away from the parents.

The more pedantic have been known to go through the results to check and remove any offenders.

<Event Director hat> We mostly don't go through results looking for unaccompanied under 11s because it's too difficult to spot them - the adult and child may not have the same surname even though they are related and kids with parent's friend is fine anyway.

But we do keep an eye out for kids who are obviously not with an adult and will have a word with the adult if we spot them. For persistent offenders we take the kids result out.

I know that as a parent you're happy for your child to run without you but remember that if there is an incident it'll be parkrun's name in the local paper and it might lead to the event (or all events) being shut down or rules tightened.

At an event with lots of runners kids will always be near trustworthy (hopefully!) adults but I did run at one where there was a section that I was alone in the woods with an under 11 - without me he'd have been completely alone and out of sight of anyone.

As far as I know there's never been a serious incident with a U11 runner but maybe that's because of the U11 rule being enforced.
