It kind of shows how big park run has become. Only a few years ago it was a kind of grassroots flash mob event that completely disappeared about 45 mins after it started.

like pistonheads it's now a victim of its own success. The council are idiots if they think they can monetise people running in a park though.

If they do vote stupid, I'm looking forward to the inevitable 1,000+ runners fancying a run in that park at 9 "just coz" from surrounding parkruns.

That'll get them flapping.

My local contacts tell me that the Parish Council have never been to a Little Stoke parkrun event (senior or junior). It's a farce.

I see two risks to the parkrun model:
  • Greedy councils
  • Volunteer fatigue
Hopefully this will not be the first instance of a greedy local council making a bad decision.

So the charges for the now non-existent parkrun in the park will start when?

No idea. Ridiculous decision. If they wanted to raise money they could have just introduced parking charges at the (currently free) car park. Of course, local residents would have objected to the increase in on-street parking.

The council backed themselves into a corner and rather than surrender kept digging deeper. The 5 who voted for are disgraceful and apparently none of them have ever been to the event.

Absolutely appalling. People going for a run in the park and it creates all this noise. Lord all mighty help us.

They also probably don't realise that if parkrun stops it will quite likely be a long time until people stop meeting to run round the park at 9 on a Saturday and there's not much they can do if 300 individuals turn up independently.
Pretty much. biggrin

So hope a large social media push can get a huge number together to show how retarded this is.

The average post "against" the parkrun in the BBC comments is seriously lacking in logic.

Crazy decision. I believe Little Stoke have already been covering themselves by trying to establish a new run / venue but that's by no means a done deal. Whether that will cover the junior parkrun in addition I have no idea.

I truely hope the parish council come to both deeply regret their decision and feel ashamed for it. I also hope the passion many have for parkrun doesn't manifest in anything self destructive that tarnishes the image of parkrun with local residents.

The message to event teams form HQ is to keep calm and let Stoke and HQ negotiate rather than 000s turning up this week or hammering sausages into the councillors lawns, I'm sure they'll have been thinking of an alternative and there will probably be a nearby council who can spot an opportunity to get some good publicity.

On the upside, I'd never heard of Parkrun until today, but I've just signed up to my local one and I'm going on Saturday. It would appear I'm far from alone in doing this.

I saw that email as well and agree that people should not antagonise the situation further. On the Little Stoke facebook page people have already said that the councillors were 'annoyed' by the emails before the vote so who knows what sort of mood they will be in now...

People turning up en-mass will only make the situation worse but you can see why people want to make a point.
