We have a guy with a push chair who tries to start as close to the line as possible, people who don't know him see a push chair and make sure they start in front of him, and then are a little surprised as he sprints past them at the start to make sure they dont hold up his sub 20 minute pace when the course gets narrower :-D

How is giving you the park run location standing behind my argument or otherwise? I am telling you what they say in the briefing. I will record the next one and email it to you/put it on YouTube if you don't believe me.
As an aside, it is not part of the mandatory briefing. HQ may not be happy with slower runners being told where to go: http://wiki.parkrun.info/index.php/BriefingIf it works then fine but as an RD I would never tell participants where they should start.

I wouldn't expect to hear it in a briefing either, but if a slower runner complained about people forcing themselves past mid-run I'd expect the suggestion to be that they started further back.
Edit: as well as a general request in the briefing to be considerate to other runners and park users. There's a 3-lap event near me that is difficult for faster runners because slower runners forget to stay left which makes lapping people difficult. As said earlier, if you want to race and go for 5k PBs, find a real race.

At our local there is a request to stay right (as well as signs) as the course is narrow in places. The marshals also remind people as they go round.
It's 'good natured' and we have had no complaints. As a faster runner you can spot the problems ahead and deal with it accordingly. In the rare event that you get baulked then that's life.
You are more likely to get taken out by a native that is annoyed that you are getting in the way of their daily morning dog walk (even though the parkrun has been going on for years at the same time each week) than another runner.

At Vicky Park there's a general keep left rule as part of it loops back, I am normally getting halfway when the whippets start passing me going the other way.
There are a few buggys and dog runners, and they are all rapid. They tend to start at the back and slowly make their way through the pack. It's rather amazing to watch.

When I run with our fast dog I often start well back (100m) so that everyone can hear the briefing (nothing in there about slower runners starting at the back) over his singing. We then overtake 80% of the field in the next 3 laps. There are a few buggys and dog runners, and they are all rapid. They tend to start at the back and slowly make their way through the pack. I start near the front although not at the front as they all sprint off! I tend to finish 40-60 out of c400 runners and regularly overtake "slower" runners who presumably start further forward than me but aren't ultimately as fast; likewise people come past me in the later half of the run as I usually go out too fast! Couldn't give 2 hoots personally as we're really not racing. As others have said get on track if you want a real race.

I seem to have hit a bit of a plateau, my last 3 Parkruns have been 24.28, 24.31 and 24.29. I'm not really a runner, but a friendly 5k is a good way to get some cardio in to my routine. I'm going to be a tourist at Plymouth for the next couple of weeks, and I know that course has a fair bit more gradient than my normal Northampton run so I'm hoping that the change will help drop my time.
As for starting position - I'm usually in the lower 1/3rd of the pack of about 400 and I normally overtake a fair few on the first lap. I prefer having to avoid slower people than being in the way of the quicker guys.

Another new parkrun for me this week at Hartlepool. Was a bit warm in the sun and it's a flat out and back run along the promenade, happy with a 20:10 though as had a few beers the night before.
Hartlepool looks a fast course. I have just hit 51 events with the 50th in Sicily. Was rather warm! Back to finishing off all the Yorkshire courses. 8 more to go with Nostell Priory tomorrow.
For a 'not much of a runner' I'm still loving parkrun. 😊
Bit of a plug for my cousin Bruce who produced the official promo video from last week's Woodhouse Moor ambassadors' weekend: Woodhouse Moor event 462.
10th parkrun this morning since discovering running in March this year. Been going out in the week practicing on a 5k loop with a big hill at the end - seems to have paid off as I managed to take 56 seconds off of my PB to just creep into the 22's.
Happy with that as I was running over 27 back in March

Following on from my "slow runners starting at the front" rant, I found a new Parkrun annoyance today. There was a kid of about 11 years old sprinting past me going hell for leather then stopping dead in front of me to catch his breath. Then repeating... over and over! Similarly, getting middle aged men huffing and puffing as they slowly overtake me, only to cut tight in front of me and slow down slightly. Grrrrrr
I wish I was with you sub 20-minute guys to leave these chumps behind!
