Tomorrow is International parkrun Day, due to it being the 9th birthday.

13 people ran in Bushy park in 2004, last week it was over 45,000.

Place your bets for how many run on the 10th birthday - it's being arranged to get the original 13 back together at Bushy next year apparently.

Figures from the historical chart show that give or take a bit, after the first 2 years, numbers have doubled every year.

2013 - 45000
2012 - 23000
2011 - 11000
2010 - 5700
2009 - 2900
2008 - 1300
2007 - 681
2006 - 378
2005 - 56
2004 - 13

Will be pacing a friend of a friend around Newport Parkrun to a 21:15 PB. I'm tapering and taking it easy for the Cardiff Half on Sunday so I expect there to be more volunteers than runners for once!

I missed last week due to manflu, and died on my arse at about 1.5km last night on my first run in nearly a fortnight, not looking good for Parkrun tomorrow.

My strategy for off days as it's a run not a race and your finish position isn't important is either volunteer to be tail runner or instead of starting in your normal place in the field and feeling pressured to go at that pace, start right at the back* and work your way forward, you feel good due to overtaking but don't have to go too fast and knacker yourself.

  • There may be a higher % of female runners in this section of the field which may be considered to be an advantage to the enjoyment of the day;)

That's about where I run anyway biggrin

The trouble is I've only run my local one 4 times so far, and got a PB every time, so I'm kind of loath to break the winning streak because I know I won't be anywhere near it this week.

Finally broken 22min at Bristol, 21:52. Faster at Brixton though the gap has narrowed.

Brockwell Park PB this week 21:05, so have restored the 45sec differential between Bristol and Brixton.

Good effort, I'm still on 22:11 at Ashton Court though I havent been for months. People who havent been there will not appreciate just how tough the Bristol parkrun course is. The elevation change is near enough 100m in the first 2500m, (of which 84m is in the first 2000m!) although you do lose all that height gain in the second half of the run!!

Not as many at Bushy yesterday as I expected, we arrived early to get parking and only just over 1000 ran,

1000 runners! jesus, my local one normally gets 70-90.

I was all primed to run yesterday but they were short of marshalls so i did my good deed for the day.

Bushy finish funnel.

The first run I did where there were only 70 (I was used to 450-500) I was surprised at how few marshals and runners there were at finish and how relaxed they were, with a few hundred or a thousand you have to be very well organised and strict!

Set off faster than I had intended to but manegd to keep it going - knocked nearly 2 minutes off my previous PB - so a 23:33 for me.

4 year old virtually demanded to run it again and improved to 37:59. The encouragement he gets from everyone is great - and seeing him do it the week before had inspired a girl a year older than him to run it as well. She finished sprinting hard whilst her dad looked ready to drop dead - but he still did it.

Next week will be taking it more steadily running the Peterborough fun run (just before the Great Eastern half marathon) with my 8 year old. My 10 year old has been told he can just run it on his own - not sure I could keep up with him anyway.

You should keep him with you until he turns 11. Kids aren't allowed to run unaccompanied until then.

Was talking about the Peterborough fun run - next time he runs the parkrun he will be 11 anyway.

Had my first go in Bristol on Saturday and was fairly chuffed with 26:41 having only done 5k on a treadmill in the gym before (yet to break 30mins). The uphill stretch had me blowing out of my a**e but coming back down was fine and there is certainly a bit of room to go quicker next time.

Same boat. Ran mine five times, had PBs each time, can't break that streak! biggrin

Wow, that is one helluva finish funnel. The one at my local is like 5m long tops!

Never realised there was a dedicated parkrun thread, but I'm glad there is as it's a great event. I've done 23 parkruns so far and am finally getting close to the sub 20 min mark (currently at 20.19).

I attended the Albert Park parkrun in Middlesbrough on Saturday and spotted an old guy who looked to be in his late 60's wearing a parkrun 250 jacket, never seen one before!

There are about 50 people in the 250 club so you won't see one very often, http://www.parkrun.com/about/parkrunclubs/ including 1 guy who's done 421 eek That's one a week for 8 years. In another 18 months he'll need a 500 club shirt.
