Wanted to do something like this for years.
Do you have to out your head under water at any time?
Oh yes, just once, but you've been cold and wet for about an hour at this time. It's sometimes more when you jump in off a couple of the jumps and if you fall off anything... which does happen.Do you have to out your head under water at any time?
It's hard work, hurts a lot from the cold and you need to throw 90% of your clothes away afterwards
I used to do this every year in a team throughout the 90s, and whilst none of us set the world alight we were all fairly fit and used to usually come in the top ten teams..
Main tips are the obvious ones, get specialist soles for your trainers (don't just use normal trainers or football boots-I found this out the hard way!), do your training exclusively off-road, and plenty of hill repetition, and on the day plenty of thin layers of clothing with base layers, hat and gloves..
I keep meaning to revisit it. In the 90s/early 2000s when I was a regular the showers after were an old cattle shed and freezing cold, there was barbed wire everywhere and the potential frozen river (with bridge you had to submerge under), I loved it and the feeling of satisfaction afterwards is addictive

the commando challenge at lympstone is worth a look if anyone is interested in an alternative to SOTF or tough guy. you start off at Bicton Arean with a 2 mile run to the assualt course, over stuff, under stuff, through stuff, nothing too artifical like flaming logs though, its basically the exact route the RM do in training although you arent wearing a bergen carrying a rifle with a Sergent shouting at you.... there are a few sheep dips but the entire course is marshalled by the marines who stand at either end of them, one pushes you through and another reaches in the other end to get you. In all its about 10 ft long and, yes its full of water, you can opt out of going through them but whats the point in that?... 2 mile run back and a new found respect to the RM and you're done.
