It was a good counter attack from Prior and Swann and Jimmy proves again what an effective tailender he is. Got to be the best no 11 in the world smile

With 200 near as dammit on the board, England want to restrict Pakistan to 300 or so.

Here's hoping the lads can sneak a few wickets in before the close.

I wouldn't st your pants just yet. Plenty of time for this brittle and inexperienced Pakistan team to fold. They've done well today but keeping up the momentum over 5 days is another thing altogether.

They've kept it up for a year....
Its a young but well moulded unified team.

Bob's not happy with Saeed's action. That pic looks like more than 15 degrees to me.

He's been cleared by ICC in 09.

Most people will see this as just jealousy.

Also like 80% of the team were wearing long sleeves, its something like 18 degs in the morning !

The picture is taken front on either in that telegraph one.

Another clear sunny day here in the UAE, with yet again a chilly breeze.

Not much on offer for the bowlers judging by the first few overs

Daft question but why would Bob Willis be jealous of him?

Not playing Monty is now showing to be a big mistake I'm afraid. You got to play to the conditions and to win matches you gotta take 20 wickets. In the subcontinent you ain't gonna do that on dead pitches with a bunch of seamers. We've got Trott chucking his pies on now and even he's taken a wicket ffs rolleyes

Agree. Don't believe you will win over there/India without some flexibility and the right people to do the job in the conditions. It's hardly a green top in England. Loading up with seamers over there or India doesn't do it for me. Problem is we are worried about our batting and Monty unlike Swan ain't going to get you any runs. My view is that we do have the batters to do the job and we should let them get on with it. Anyway come on England let's push on whoever is picked.

Nope it isnt. Our batsmen have let us down in this match, not the bowling. Taking Monty along would have made no difference to our first innings. As it is, the job now will be for those that failed in the first innings to drop anchor in the 2nd and see this game out till lunch on Day 5.

Bowling does not win you Test matches on Days 1 and 2. Poor batting does lose you matches though. Bowling wins you matches on Days 4 and 5. This is the balance and beauty of the Test match series.

So, betting?

Draw looks most likely - can't believe England will collapse again and Pakistan probably won't have much more than 130 run lead.

How many tests in this series?

3 days left and so I reckon England win. Skittle them out before lunch - bat the best part of 2 days and set anything over 200 and they'll crumble on the last day. They've made a meal of chasing small totals in the past with better players and so I can't see this lot doing any better.

Late wickets -

This is not a disaster, yet 288-7 - we still have a good chance.

Which I believe is where I was going in my original posting. Restrict them to 300, then drop anchor. This England batting lineup, on this wicket should be looking at 400. Leave the Pakistan team with 300 to chase on a late Day 4 and Day 5 wicket and let Jimmy, Broad and Guns loose on them in continual rotation with Swann at the other end, rested by a few overs of KP and Trott.

This bowling attack is as good as I have seen from England and so far they have coped with everything throw at them. This is a different situation, a different test of their various abilities, well lets see if they can impose themselves upon it. We have aspirations for this team that they should become the pre-eminent Test team of our time, as the Windies took the 80s/early 90s, the Aussies late 90s and early 00s, so nobody has really imposed themselves over everybody else since 2005. This England team/squad have been the main Test team for the last 18months and look to remain so for the next 1/2 decade.

If they want to cement that position and look at becomming a side that defines an era, then they have to be able to take to these situations and impose themselves, even when they should not. That afterall was the hallmark of those great Windies and Aussie sides, they could impose themselves in pretty much all situations. The main development for me has been Jimmy going from being the "miracle ball" talent to a genuine leader of the attack who grew in stature when the situation needs a leader to ensure his Pack hunt together.
