Copenhagen 2015 entered - new bike is at the shop, just waiting for it to be built, going to collect it on Thursday............
Good choice for a PB (I did it in 2011), a fast bike course if the wind isn't too bad & (apart from the odd ramp) a flat & very well supported run course. Bring plenty of cash (£20+ for a pizza 3 years ago) but a lovely city. Jump on the train to Malmo to get yourself here http://en.ribersborgskallbadhus.sk-3.se/?pid=1 for a couple of hours the day after the race, should help ease the aches. Anything else you want to know - just ask !

Top work DrGav! Great write up and cracking effort - tough to have something like that dent your efforts so early in the day . . . 26 minutes must have seemed like an ABSOLUTE eternity! Big thumbup for the mental strength you need to deal with that and still finish in a great time beer

Is it possible to 'blag' an IM finish - guess i'll find out in 35 days.
Best of luck! If it's any consolation I'm pretty much in the same boat! Training's been OK, but I've discovered "planning" training around a newborn is nigh on impossible!! More a case of taking things day by day and taking what sessions I can.

Ticked over on the swimming (and it may well be a wetsuit free swim, so that's playing on my mind at the mo') - managed one century ride (got 3 weekends left to try for any more) and once again ticked over with the running . . . the last three weekends I have managed 6 runs of 25k+, so that's been better just recently. We'll see what it gets me come race day (which is 27th Sept in Mallorca) - more than likely what I deserve, I should imagine!

One big thing though is a nutrition plan for the bike - or rather lack of one. Fuelled my Lanzarote bike with gels/jelly, which was OK, but made me feel sick as a dog come the run. Any decent ideas on more savoury/natural foodstuffs anyone? I really have to force sweet stuff down me and on a day to day basis, anything like cakes, biscuits, sweets or chocolate bars are all things I just never eat . . .

Cheers dB, nutrition is a tough one. The sort of stuff you like to eat just isn't going to give you the 'hit' of energy you need & the last thing I would want to do is load up with stuff that is going to take a lot of digesting & isn't as energy rich as it needs to be. Do you know what gels are on the course on raceday ? & can you try them (although IM Austria last year didn't provide any gels on the bike course, you brought your own). Or can you experiment with some different brands. I don't think recommendations on gels are going to be any use here, because it's just what works for you. Bananas should be available on course, could you bring a chopped up malt loaf out with you ? if it's natural you want, then sugary fruits are your best bet, but you probably don't want to be carting loads of raisins, apricots etc round with you. Sorry, thats a bit rambley & probably not that helpful !!

I managed to get a century done the weekend before last (tough going in the chilterns) & another 80 ish miles done in midweek rides & went out yesterday (yes - in that rain !) to get another century done, but first tub punctured at 50 miles, so put my one spare on & the other one went at 75 !, but i'm happy enough the legs will get me round ok as I had plenty in the tank at that point (all fueled by Malt Loaf & squash to that point !)

Thanks dangerousB - yep, the 26 minutes felt like it lasted forever... Hopefully won't make that mistake in IM Switzerland next year!!! hehe

You could always try these rice cakes http://pages.rapha.cc/team/rice-cakes-a-recipe - looks like the boys at SKY scoff them, so could be worth a go!

You have just signed up for a day you'll never forget thumbup

Now you've just got to try and make the best use of the next 11 months, get the most out of winter training that you can and start 2015 with a good base . . . don't fall into the trap of thinking you've got heaps of time. It will disappear far quicker than you want it to!!!

Well done on getting involved though. Top bombing fella beer

Looks like I seem to have gone and signed up for next year's Outlaw (my first ironman distance).

Really looking forward to it for some reason. I might feel a bit different on the morning of the race....smile

Well done - you'll love it!! - apparently 500 places sold in 12 minutes this morning, all the big fast UK IM / 70.3 races for 2015 have sold out crazy fast this year!!

Thanks. I live nearby and actually run round Holme Pierrepoint quite regularly, so it seemed perfect.

I expected it to be popular as 7500 people pre-registered, so I was sat at my computer refreshing the screen at 10am (Glastonbury style).

Gonna see how I get on, and if I dont die, then I'll be hoping to do a big ironman in the Europe in 2016 (Roth?)

Well it is about time I joined in.

I have done a couple of super sprint triathlons and have thoroughly enjoyed them, so when one of my Tri-mad friends suggested a 70.3 next year, I ambitiously said yes!

I have therefore got 11 months to step up from a 400m swim, 15 k bike and 5k run to a 70.3........how hard can it be?!!?

I am trying to put together a sensible training plan. It will be really hard work as I need to drop 3 stone, have just stopped smoking and have to fit this around a very demanding job and young family. However, having a set goal to aim for gives me some good motivation not to quit - I just need to knuckle down and do the training now.

My biggest challenge, other than generally improving my fitness, will be the swim - I can swim but am very slow, not having had lessons since I was a kid. I swam 2k in the pool a few months ago and it took me 70minutes! I was thinking of booking a set of 10 one hour 1-2-1 sessions with a swim school that specialise in teaching adults from beginners through to competitive swimmers. Has anyone else had swim coaching and has it made much difference? It won't be cheap and I want to reassure myself that it will be a good investment.

Anyway, any tips over the next 11 months will be appreciated.

Swim coaching would be a great shout. I did improver lessons at the end of last year then joined a triathlon club, and my technique and endurance has improved massively along with my open water ability. I've got cyclist legs, so I'm not naturally good at staying afloat but having someone there to guide me with my technique has really helped me improve

Re Swim Coaching. Make sure you tell them you are doing Triathlon. i.e Endurance swimming. A Masters swim programme will result in a lot of the other strokes being taught and ultimately it'll waste your time. Not to say other strokes aren't useful. But you need to concentrate as much as possible on FC. A Google for "Triathlon swim coaching Kent" may help you find someone decent

Thanks for the advice - I will make sure I choose a swimming instructor carefully and that they understand what I am training for. There seem to be several to choose from so I will speak to a few and see who best fits with what I need.

Blimey - times have changed. When I did an Ironman distance race in 1996 there were 150 of us. And it was the only race of that distance in the UK that year.
