My first triathlon tomorrow. It's an individual team super sprint so each person does the full swim-bike-run in turn. Distances are short as it's only 250m swim, 8k bike and 1.5k run so will be properly flat out. Not sure how in going to approach the swim yet but leaning towards not getting involved in the start. I'll quickly be left behind anyway. I'm expecting people to be riding away from transition as I pass half way.
Good luck!

You may find the swim not as bad as expected, although I wouldn't try to get too involved. The starts can be chaotic and if you're a slower swimmer the last thing you want is to be in the middle of a melee and risk getting ducked or pushed about as other swimmers go past, it will hurt both rhythm and confidence.

BTW, I haven't actually completed my first tri yet, but have done a few swims with busy starts. Best thing you can do would be find a little patch of clear water and find your own pace without being interrupted. smile

That was mostly good fun. Didn't get kicked in the face during the swim and swam at about my best pace from training. My breathing was probably a bit crap as I never really settled into a rhythm but it'll do this time as I didn't get out last (9th of 12). Managed to catch and pass four people on the bike leg and ended with a bit of a crappy run. For some reason I developed a stitch while on the bike. It didn't cause me any bother until the run though so I was probably a minute or so slower over the 1,500m. Now to settle down and watch how the pros do it in London.

Did the bike leg of the Outlaw Half triathlon in Nottingham, which was great fun despite the conditions.

Our swimmer did a 32min swim which put me quite a way down in the overall. Got out on the 56mile bike course and started overtaking people until I was pretty much on my own for the remaining 30 miles or so. Ended up being 5th bike back into transition. Handed over to the runner who managed to close down the 2nd place relay runner, and ended up taking 2nd place by over 3mins smile and 8th overall.

Conditions were horrific though, driving rain and strong winds. Really please to get a 2:21 bike split though, which I think was 3rd fastest overall, and the fastest relay. Averaged 277w.

That's very impressive! I heard there were a lot of disqualifications on the bike course. People going the wrong side of cones etc with marshals telling them they had a 20min/secon/whatever penalty that turned out to be a DQ.

Thanks guys! Had a look at the results earlier and noticed all the DQs, expected to see plenty of DNFs but never seen more than a couple of DQs. That's a harsh way to not get a result. The marshalls did seem a bit less interested this year than in previous. Guess that's understandable given conditions.

The comments on it I'd seen suggested try only found they had been DQ'd when hey saw the results. They carried on the event and were given a medal, t-shirt etc.

That's an absolutely cracking bike leg Tom and moreso given the conditions - top effort!! thumbup
Thought of you guys whilst at my girlfriend's Gran's 90th birthday do on Sunday!! Wished I could have been doing that swim leg!

Actually, I've just started back training properly - I tore my r/h/s tibialis posterior tendon 4 weeks before the Paris marathon on April 12th and consequently couldn't manage any long runs (well >25k) before going there, but decided to go anyway (managed a 3:22) - in the process I exacerbated the injury (I really should know better, but with travel/hotels booked it's tough!!) and combined with the busiest couple of months that my business has experienced in memory, I've had a VERY frustrating time training wise since!! Like not a lot of anything mad

It looks like my ankle's sorted now though - had a few 10k's last week with no repercussions (albeit they were a LOT harder than they should have been!) and work has calmed a little so don't have to be in early or finish late and may even be able to slip in a few afternoon sessions now woohoo

That's an incredible bike leg, well done.

I've got the Outlaw coming up in 8 weeks, hopefully the weather is a lot better (not too hot though).

Wow that's a cracking bike leg in unpleasant conditions. It took me a couple of minutes over 3 hours to do the same course. A fair bit slower than I was hoping for but had a bit of a mental low on the second loop and it took a while to get my head back in the game.

Need to sort out my nutrition too as whilst I've been okay with sis go bars in training, I felt I was going to see them again several times on the bike and run.

Pleased with my 70.3 debut achieving a 5:33 which included my first ever half marathon. Roll on IM Wales next, even though I know I've bitten off more than I can chew with that challenge.

Holy st! 3:22 with a dodgy tendon, that's awesome!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I've knackered the rotator cuff / bursa on my right shoulder and despite having a steroid injection it's not really playing ball at present. I've not swum at all in 9 weeks and IM Switzerland is less than 7 weeks away eeeeek! I'm hooping I can just make it out of the swim under the cut-off and then rip it up on the bike and run course. If not,
I'm aiming at the Munich Marathon in October - If I get under 3:45 I'll be ecstatic! beer

Mrs williaa68 did her first ironman 70.3 in a bit over 6.15 today in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. She was pretty pleased with that - another hot one - someone said their bike computer registered 38 degrees on the second part of the bike leg. Very impressed with the organisation. Some amazing bikes there!

Munich? Any particular reason? I'm looking at one in October and like the look of Eindhoven. Flat. Flat is good.

Greg, Munich is meant to be a fast course and it's in October... The recovery drinks will be good ;-)

I'm now more than halfway though Fink's 30 week programme with Ironman Wales in mind, although it's felt like a bit of a hit-and-miss training month.

Firstly, from mid April I cut my Sunday long runs back by a quarter/half hour to also do a long swim for a 10km in May. I then picked up a strain in my shoulder which fortunately did not flare up in the water, but it cut the cycling back as that was when I felt it most. It was only a week before the swim so I took it very easy that week and treated it as a taper leading up to the swim. Following the swim it's just felt like things haven't gone very well. Shoulder still not quite right, I missed last Sunday's run as I'd come down with a flu/cold bug, and today my chain snapped while climbing the hill before I managed to get out on the run.

However, I have my first warm up event this weekend, an Olympic distance Triathlon in the Forest of Dean. I feel like I'm over the cold, don't have any lingering pains and a week of easy training without any interval stuff following it, so I'm feeling a bit happier about the next few weeks. smile

19 years after I did my one and only Ironman, I was really pleased to see this article about the "run/walk method" where you accept from the start that you are going to benefit from walking a certain amount and do it occasionally from the start. My Ironman had 19 evenly placed drinks stations and I walked at each and every one while I had my drink, got my breath back and generally refreshed. It gave me something to aim for and look forward to and these were the only parts of the race where I walked. It sounds a bit lame but in total I only walked about 1km out of 42 and it was the only race I ever did when my run placing was higher than both my swim and bike placings. I'd say that proves it was a success. Just for reference, my run time was 4hrs 13mins.

"run/walk method"
Aaaages ago I went to a Jeff Galoway chat about his run-walk strategy, the number of people who subscribed to the method surprised me. I did my usual stop/start/catch-up/mess about run along with a group who had the beeping watches, so they were doing it on a time basis rather than distance. When we finished they looked like they'd been out for a stroll, I looked like my hips had been removed laugh 4 hours-ish too.
