GO Gav !!! Hard old swim as said & haven't checked the bike course profile, but a couple of mates have done it a few years ago now & seem to remember it was a fairly lumpy course, last bike spilt was 29kph so looks like he was in ok form at the end of the leg (or like Austria a lot of downhill in the last 10k !).
25k to run as I write, he'll do it !!

Yeah looks like didn't make the second split on the bike? Hopefully not a crash.
Yeah, that's what crossed my mind - I'll keep my fingers crossed for him too.I did go arse over tit, yes. Wasn't even my fault! In a nutshell, there was a group who *weren't* doing IM went past me and about a minute ahead had pulled up into the kerb, opposite a right turn off the main drag. The lead rider decided it was a good idea to just pull out (no signalling, no looking) and take the junction just as I was on top of them ... there was nowhere for me to go and I t-boned him and went over the top at maybe 20kmh. Not a huge accident, but I've done my left forearm and all my left finger tips, and got a ruined right ankle so I wasn't pedaling anywhere quickly, but I also had a broken left gear/brake lever and dislocated lower pulley which meant the bike was a bit disabled. So my race was effectively over at about 40ish km. Limped to the next marshals and got an ambulance (added woowoos!) and spent a couple of hours at the medic centre. st does happen. Still there'll always be another one.
Well done again DrGav, it's reading your exploits that made me want to try this nonsense

Bad luck, hope you get fixed soon. How did the swim start work this year? Last year was just a mass start at 06:00 (I think) loads of people were still entering the water at the start. I understand this year it was more staggered? It's sobering to think some people have just finished it at 23:00. I did go arse over tit, yes. Wasn't even my fault! I've never done a mass start, so can't compare the experience, but the rolling start worked for me. Basically you self-seeded based on what your anticipated finish time was, stood in an appropriate place in the queue (for me, pretty much at the back!) and then it was a slow walk straight into the water and get on with it. I think everyone was swimming by 6:15. The pros started in the water about 10 minutes before everyone else started getting in. The flip-side of the staggered start is that there's no in-water warm-up.Hi Folks - I survived!
Many thanks for your kind comments - hope I wasn't giving you too many heart failures when you were tracking me on Sunday!
bigandclever - sorry to hear about your crash, can't believe other non-competing riders would have been so stupid to have had so little respect for those racing Hope you (and the bike!) get fixed soon!
Warning - another long race report - well, it was a LONG race!!!

Great write up Gav, well done again for bagging another finish ! Final long race ? I meant it after Weymouth last year & will stick to it, my mate (with me when we met in Austria) is doing no 10 in Vichy at the end of August & i think that's his 4th or 5th last long race Many thanks for your kind comments - hope I wasn't giving you too many heart failures when you were tracking me on Sunday!

Morning all
I am an Outlaw!! (I must have heard that phrase several thousand times yesterday (substitute I for You)
Anyway, managed to complete Nottingham Outlaw in 12:57 yesterday. It was my first Ironman distance so I am well happy with the time, especially as I had estimated 14-15hrs.
Short write up:
Swim went very well. Managed to find a bit of space at the start (1200 people mass start) so only got punched in the face a couple of times. I'm not a great swimmer, but left the water at 1:20 which is faster than I expected.
I spent the first half of the bike trying to slow down, as I was 2mph faster than I thought I should be. The rain came at 70 miles and the remaining 40 was really unpleasant. Finished in 6:48.
Set off running far too quick as I was feeling good. I then spent the next 26 miles waiting to hit "the wall", but it never happened. I did gradually slow down but managed to run it all, and throw in a sprint finish. I was absolutely soaked throughout, but enjoyed it in a sadistic way. Finished in 4:22.
Add on my usual "leisurely" transitions makes 12:27.
Overall, was a much more enjoyable day than expected. I never reached the depths of despair/pain that I expected to. Don't know if this was because of my training, or I just dropped on a good day. Either way I'm delighted with how it went.
The atmosphere throughout was incredible. Both the crowds and feed station volunteers were vocal/cheery throughout. Would have been a much more miserable experience without them. The pirate feed station especially was an interesting experience. Also, the man on Bingham roundabout shouting "You're all idiots, why are you doing this? It's p155ing it down!" was a highlight
Anyone else here take part?

Hi all.
Apologies if this has been discussed previously. I did have a good look through previous posts but couldn't find what i was looking for. I was unsure whether to post here or in the pro cycling thread - but one look in there I realised here was the best place.
I'm new to triathlon and my goal is a iron distance event probably next year.
I'm after a bit of assistance with what bike to buy. I've only been riding a year and I commute infrequently on a halfords carrera tdf. I plan to keep the tdf and buy something decent to do events with only and by the looks of ebay last Christmas time it looks like there might be some decent machinery to be had.
From what I've read on here I might be more suited to a good road bike rather than a tri specific bike and I'm happy to spend decent money. I'm expecting a few crashes along the way so I dont think I want something so brittle that a tumble costs me a carbon frame and forks.
There seems to be so much choice out there and there must be other folks that have been in the same position?
Any help really would be appreciated

I personally would get a decent road bike (thats fits you) and add a nice set of wheels and aero bars. You'd get a lot more use out of it than a full on TT bike. Maybe get an "aero" bike for a tiny bit of extra advantage.
I would stress the importance of getting a decent bike fit though, especially if you intend to fit aero bars. No point in being aero if you get a bad back after 10 mins and have to sit up to stretch.

Here's a short film of our local (Torridon) Extreme Triathlon: Celtman. I do their photography every year and am always amazed at how mad/determined* people are.

I had a few beers yesterday afternoon and entered my first triathlon. Its only a mini taster event costing 6 quid to enter but i suppose you have to start somewhere.
Only a 200m swim, 6 mile bike and 2 mile run i think. I had better start learning to swim because i only have 4 weeks to go from 0 metres to 200 metres!

Nice one, they are a bit addictive. I look forward to your post in about 12 months telling us you are going for an ironman !Only a 200m swim, 6 mile bike and 2 mile run i think. I had better start learning to swim because i only have 4 weeks to go from 0 metres to 200 metres!
I've been asked to fill in for the swim leg of a relay team at the London tri on Saturday, I am up against it to get back home through, has anyone done it & knows if I can clear off home asap after getting out of the water ? I know I should stay & support, but if I have to I won't be able to do it.
Ta.
