Good write up Rich_W well done on completing a really tough race- no way that can be considered a failure, especially given your bike issues and chucking up!
Agree - certainly not a failure in my book! You had plenty of opportunities and (valid) excuses for a DNF, yet struggled through and crossed the finish line. Anyone who's done an IM knows that finishing in any time shy of the cut-off is quite some achievement and in some respects, being out there for +15hrs can be far harder than going quicker in a shorter time.

Cheers Rich - I made it into the background (around 7:11) on the official highlight show as I was racking my bike wink

For those after am M dot race, Weymouth has now defected from Challenge to WTC, Sept 11 2016 (week before IM Wales). Could be quite a quick race if you're fit & decent biker - I was neither so it wasn't quick for me !!

Right, that's been nice - 5 weeks off with no training whatsoever!!

Just taken delivery of a shiny new turbo and dusted off my running headtorch, so it's now time to get my arse in gear . . . first run tonight since Barcelona and just fired up a Trainerroad subscription, the FTP ride for which is tomorrow biggrin

DrGav/Rich_W, how do you rate the Zurich race? Looking at races with my training buddy for next year and Zurich is good timewise, but it certainly looks a bit yikes pricewise, I've got to say!!! Any advice/comments welcome for that one!

I recommend it tbh.

"IF" I was going to do another IM, I'd definitely go back to Zurich. It's well run and the language barrier is non existent. Yes, if you aren't prepared for the prices, it can be surprising. But I figured it was a once only deal. So live with it.

Place is clean and tidy. Saw a couple of drunks arguing though "Shizer! Shizer!!!" laugh As a PHer you'll like the randomness of the cars you see. Every Audi is an RS something. AMG Merc's loads of M's Every car is Silver, grey or Black. They don't tend to go for Ferraris or Lambos or colours really. More discrete.

Well supported course especially out on the hills of the bike to the East. Locals come out to support. Traffic on a Sunday is very light. Like I say. Recommended

Good to hear from you dangerousB,

I'm currently going through the pain of no training too - had my shoulder op 2 weeks ago to repair my subscapularis tendon and I've another 4 in a sling until I see the surgeon and hopefully get the go ahead to start training again... starting to go stir crazy!

I'd agree with everything Rich_W has said. I really enjoyed the race despite the non-wetsuit swim (which for me was measured with a sundial) and the epic 35+ degrees C on the bike. Support on the course was good, Heartbreak Hill 1st time round was epic, 2nd time round most folk had moved onto the run course. There were probably fewer supporters than in Austria but overall the atmosphere was good. Clear water in the swim (and phased start too), great scenery and excellent tarmac for the 2 loop bike course - very little traffic, all of which was very cyclist friendly. 4 loop run is being changed for next year I believe.

Zurich is a very smart city, plenty of good restaurants etc. It is pretty expensive but the infrastructure is excellent - tram system works superbly. Overall, a thumbup from me hehe

Likewise DrGav - good to hear you've had that shoulder operated upon. I tore my rotator cuff earlier in the year (evidently nowhere near as bad as yours!) so I can imagine how it feels. I think mine was the infraspinatus and hopefully it's looking like the physio/exercises are going to sort it, but it's taken ages to get to this stage and even so probably only about 75% at the moment.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though and hope the surgery has a good result . . . time off through injury is such a pain in the arse, but if it's any consolation this is a great time of the year for it - got totally drenched on my pitch black run last night, it wasn't pleasant!!!

Useful stuff about IM Zurich
Cheers for the info - it looks to my fag packet maths that Zurich is probably going to cost 400 quid more than Nice (which is a race that I definitely want to do, but is a touch early for my mate this year), so I just wanted to make sure it'll be worth it!! thumbup

Anybody else entered in for, or got plans for races next year?? I'm halfway looking at a 70.3 as well - could do with being forced encouraged to introduce more speed work into my prep smile

It's funny. Nice was my other possible. But it sold out before I signed up (November last year) What put me off was I know it can be really hot down there and Zurich was going to be a sensible climate... rolleyeslaugh

As DrGav says the Run course will be different next year, goes into the city more. And today I got a message the swim is slightly different as well. Next years is the 20th Anniversary event. So could be worth it for that alone.

Cheers!

Hope the shoulder is healing well. Like you say, best time of year to be off recovering - although I'm itching to get started again. Never mind another IM, getting a t-shirt on by myself has proved one of the trickiest things this year so far!!! hehe

I'd better get fixed and back to work soon, being off is costing me a fortune!! I've bought 2 cars this month and sold one... what is they say about idle hands? biggrin

The GF's sister just won her 3rd Ironman, IRONMAN COZUMEL, smashing the opposition by a huge margin of nearly 7 minutes to 2nd place, so chuffed for her.

To be fair Abraham is Elite level. Not some AGer like the rest of us. And coached by one of the very best!

Never said she wasn't.
FYI on her first ever Ironman as an Ager she came 3rd overall, which lead to her going pro. Until this it hadn't even entered her mind that she could be a pro.

First post in the thread of 2016, where is everyone?

Did a leisurely indoor half ironman yesterday ... pool is 20 minutes from my gym so a nice break there, then the bike on an average resistance setting, then the treadmill at 1%. Still, did the mileage so I'm happy... 6 hours pretty much, not including breaks. Won't be setting any world records soon but I'm not broken this morning either smile

I've been keeping some fitness with a few runs/cycles/swims, and did a BRUTAL running challenge in November, but now need to try to get the enthusiasm for training back, which i have been finding a right chore in this weather. It doesn't help that I ****ing hate the turbo!

I've got three decent events entered this year, so will be working toward those.

Isoman - 7 mile swim, 61.3 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. It should suit me, as swimming is my best discipline.
Alpe D'Huez middle - Middle distance with some decent climbs including Bourg d'Oisans to Alpe D'Huez.
Ironman Wales - I have to do this again, it was amazing in 2015.

Fair play that is quite a line up for this year. Good luck with it all. So far all I've done is enter the Anglesey sandman.
IM Wales sprained my rotator cuff and it still isn't 100% but then I haven't been doing the physio exercises so it's my own fault.
Proposed doing another ironman to SWMBO and received a frosty reply so 2017 it is then smile

Provisional line up for this year:

Aix en Provence 70.3 on the first May bank hol
A 70.3 somewhere on the second May BH - there's a Challenge event in Spain somewhere that I might do
Kronborg or Luxembourg 70.3 in June
IM Canada in July
Ruegen or Weymouth 70.3 in September.

Work will likely wipe out at least one of the 70.3s. The only one I've actually entered so far is IMC.

Well yet again (5th year running) I didn't get a London marathon place and just in case I thought karma may give me a helping hand, I repeated the feat with the Berlin marathon!

However, as of today, I'm in for:-

Paris marathon in April
IM Switzerland in July

and I'll be booking a 70.3 sometime in the next month or so.
Training wise I'm just ticking over with the cycling and running and doing some S&C with a newly acquired olympic bar and olympic rings. No swimming yet - I ditched my stupidly expensive gym subscription in favour of stocking my torture chamber, so I'll have to wait until the outside water temps creep over 12°C (at least) or find another pool soon!

What turbo have you got? I've recently sorted a Trainerroad subscription and tbh, I prefer turbo sessions to riding outside (even in decent weather)!!!

My wife has kindly entered me in a 70.3 event in spetember as part of my christmas present. Nice of her but a bit ambitious since i have never ever swam in open water (its a sea swim) and i have only ever done one go-tri event before.
