Cheeky sprint tri before breakfast today, with an added tactical error of cycling there and back. First day this year OW and, by Christ, it was cold. Was a shakedown before a half in 2 weeks time and, in that respect, was good. Kit check, transition plan and all that. On the flip side, it seems I am nowhere near ready. Swim was really difficult to catch breath, there's something wrong with my bike that I need to look at, and the run ruined my ankles with about a million molehills to fall into. Still, I'm sure it will all look better tomorrow!

Entered another Go Tri at the weekend (200m, 6k, 2k) and improved on my last finish time so I’ve entered our local sprint triathlon. It’s called the Oysterman (anyone doing it?) near Whitstable, Kent on the 18th June. I’ve not run 5k for a long time so took myself out Tuesday and ran 6k, as I suspected my heart and lungs are up to the job but my legs aren’t quite there yet. Ended up with an Achilles issues and a sore hip on the same leg so I now need to rest it until the day.

I’m fairly confident on the swim, cycle a doddle but the run is a worry. I’m sure I’ll complete the course with a couple of gels but I’m getting nervous!

Less than 2 weeks to go now before me and the wife attempt iron distance.

Had been feeling really tired last week and we had a standard distance (are any really std?) tri on sunday gone. I didn't think i would be much cop but it went surprisingly well.

I did 2hrs 36 and the wife did 2hrs 38 for 1500m swim, 23.5 mile bike and 7 mile run. She won 3rd senior female.

I was happy with the swim, i was well inside the top half when last year at a similar event i was about 3rd last out of the water. I actually enjoyed being bashed about a bit too!

The bike went well too, it was fairly flat but i managed 19.5 mph average on my road bike and held my own against plenty on aero bikes. Im no great cyclist but i think thats my fastest ride ever.

As all of our training has been long and slow runs i was expecting to struggle in picking up the pace a it in the run. Well the zone 2 training seems to have worked, averaged 7 min 15 secs per mile which is fast for me and to be honest i never felt like i was working hard, not blowing like i usually do!

It seemed like the previous 28 weeks of training clicked on Sunday, lets hope it does on 18th June!

Well done. All clicking into place smile

What race is on the 18th June though?

On a slight side note, virtually no races are sold out this year. Interesting, since a couple years back. Nice, for example sold out the October before the race. (I was erring between FR and CH so it made my decision for me)

So the training for my first tri is going really well - not! Is it absolutely normal to get in the open water for the first time and absolutely choke? Ok, so I hadn't been swimming for a while (tbh, it was the only thing I felt confident about) but went to Rutland Water for an open swim session. Hired a wetsuit, got my yellow float (first timer), acclimatised and off I went, or didn't. I wasn't even scared about the stuff (weeds, sharks, morays, johnnies, trees and shopping trolleys, etc) in the water - this had been my biggest fear, they even laid a little rubber carpet on. All good so far.
But I couldn't, for the life of me, catch my breath. At all. I wasn't scared of drowning - I reckon you'd struggle to drown in a wetsuit, it's so buoyant (notwithstanding tides/waves/currents, etc none of that in Rutland), I wasn't worried about the 'scary stuff in the water' which I thought I would be, I just couldn't swim. Or breathe. It took me approx. 17hrs to do the 250m course and the rest of the day to get my breath back. I went to the pool the day after and did a 1mile swim in lengths - it was fine ( a little 'breathy' to start but all quite relaxed after I realised I could actually still swim). Is this normal or am I wasting my time doing the tri? I'm going again on Sunday. I'm going to get in, swim (I hope!), get out, have a think/coffee, get in, swim, get out, think - until the time runs out. Normal, or irrational? Tips?

Yes its normal.

Just take your time when you get in, get your head under the water, get used to the cold, practice breathing in and out. On the day get in the water before the race to adjust.

As above, that is an exact copy of my first open water swim. Felt the cold, hyperventilated and struggled not to swim too fast, felt cramp after about 25 mins...

Second attempt the sun was shining, the sea flat and calm and I had a neoprene hat on under the swim cap. Couldn't have been more different and from that point on I've been fine in the water.

I'd be even better if the lorry sized jellyfish would sod off and leave Tenby alone!

Edinburgh's new half IM at the start of July, and due to lingering heel pain I haven't run since February. (I thought it was caused by running, but have now replaced cycling, running, work and casual shoes and have concluded it's also uncomfortable after cycling) Long cycle ride planned on Saturday then I'm going to have a week's complete rest and see if that helps. A bit frustrating really, I wanted to be a bit more organised with my training and it's really not worked.

Good luck to you both. Back in the day, when I was serious about triathlon, the one ironman distance race I did was the one only race where I genuinely enjoyed the day. The supportive and sporting atmosphere was different to all shorter races which were just plain hard work in comparison.

Thanks, Im hoping i find it to be the case, being a smaller event there might not be a massive amount of support out on the bike course but the run is laps round Keswick so hopefully there will be plenty of people about.

Only one more little run to do tomorrow before the event!

The race I did in 1996 was the only ironman distance race in the UK that year and had 150 competitors. I think it was all the better for being small.

I've always said that I'm happy doing stuff like that on hot days but I must admit it's even a bit hot for me today.

Yes it was properly mentally bloody hot!

In the end it turned out excellent though, far better than i thought!

I had a major wobble before the swim even started and had a bit cry to myself, decided i couldn't do it!

Anyway once the race got going i was ok, Last year i was worried about cut off times for the event in the end i was out of the water in 1hr 19 which i was amazed with! after the run to transition my swim time was 1hr 21 min 15 secs.

Went for a full change for the bike, when i went to rack my bag i spotted the wife getting changed so we decided to go together.

The bike was where i started to feel the heat a bit, nice route but got a bit hilly around 80-90 miles exactly where i started to flag a bit.
Anyway did 6hrs 54 for the bike! Far better than expected.

The run was where the heat really took its toll, it was brutally hot! I actually felt strong until i started to overheat then it was a bit of a run/walk war of attrition. I have never been as hot in my life and actually based the run on how far it was to the next sponge bucket or hosepipe instead of miles! The wife really struggled too with the heat, may be i could have gone a bit harder if i hadn't hung around to help her out, maybe i would have went faster and then blew up? Who knows? we decided after training together we were finishing together so just kept plodding on! We actually passed loads of people on the run and finished off with 4hrs 30 mins.

We crossed the line together at 13hrs 1 minute! Most surprising thing was once i got over my initial wobble there was no way at all I was stopping at any point.

The wife even won her age group prize!

It really was a superb event, friendly and very well organised.

Never, I wouldn't rule out a half but training for a full is just a bit too much of a commitment.

You say that!

I said that in 2015! laugh

But post Xmas I noticed a bit of tummy and love handle appearing! So signed up to a marathon in September for a challenge (Won't be doing it though, since I then got Plantar Fasciitis and am seeing a physio! frown so can't train at all! )

Then a friend asked me to do the Great London swim next week (1mile) So I've been doing some regular swimming again.

And I'm now considering a race in summer of 2018! (Roth would be cool)

Another friend who is a damn good biker and half decent runner is now considering a IM next year, (think Bolton) so might fall in with him instead

Just when I thought I was out.....

Dammit! laugh
