I would buy shoes in person so the fit is perfect and get the best you can afford.
I would also invest in a bike fit session. 112 miles is a long way if you're not comfortable and you'll pick up injuries training.
Also may be worth some swimming lessons concentrating on technique depending on your level.
My daughter's boyfriend paid for a few and it made a huge difference.

I support the suggestion above about swimming lessons. Best to line up full of confidence without any cares about who does what at the start.
Unless I misunderstand Ebay, isn't the Cervelo above going to go for way more than a grand?

Re the Cervelo don't be sure. I thought about selling mine last year and watched a few, many went for not much more than a grand. Cycle exchange offered me 1200

Cheers. I'm sure there are bargains to be found. But for the OP, I'd guard against thinking that a fancy bike will do the work. It might help a bit but good legs and lungs are where it's at.
You can't blag your way round an IM, I don't think anyone is suggesting otherwise. Like I said, I saw four or five high end tri bikes totalled on the Zurich course. Bit of rain and some fast descent with pilot who likely did 90% of their training on their road bike.... disaster for them. If you are just getting into Tri, then a good road bike is a much better bet. However you still need a good road bike !
Better to be fit with st gear, than undertrained with fancy carbon everywhere.
Some great tips on this thread. I'm seeking a bit of feedback please on pacing for a half ironman bike. I've raced the distance before but the last time was in 1990. The race I'm doing is quite close to my home so I can ride the two lap bike course before the race, and have done so already. I managed about 2 hours 50 minutes, at the end of a fairly heavy training week.
My question is, how much slower should I be going in the race in comparison to a time trial effort on the same course?
The run is a 3 lap course, pancake flat.

I mean there are so many variables, which is what makes Tri so much fun. My question is, how much slower should I be going in the race in comparison to a time trial effort on the same course?

Is bike your strongest leg ?
What overall time are you looking for ?
Etc etc
I would say ride it again in zone 3 heart rate (ie at around 60% of max HR. See how long that takes. Race day effort is probably somewhere between 60% - 80% effort. Maybe only 100% effort on hills (or a tres glamourous sprint to T2)

I have more experience in the run than the other disciplines. I'm not fast these days but I can grind it out OK.
Thanks for replying. Appreciated.

When’s the next one
Cheers. Planning on a few 10 and 25 mile tts and pondering the Brutal Half in Snowdonia, depending on my running endurance over the next couple.of months. When’s the next one
Tempting, but I am not in that kind of shape at the moment. (More round than triangle)

Looks fun. Is the finish at the top, or do you come down again.

As I understand, you do the climb first on the run, then make up the distance on a round the lake route. Even the IM, double and triple racers only climb once, presumably for safety reasons.Tempting, but I am not in that kind of shape at the moment. (More round than triangle)
Just remember, round is both hydrodynamic and aerodynamic. Triangles are not. I am also round. And I descend on a bike very well, thanks to gravity! Big rest opportunity while racing snakes have to pedal for momentum!

First triathlon in 10 years yesterday. 51-Fiver Standard distance. Crap swim, good bike, better than expected run. By God I hurt today.
Was that from Lake 32? I was out on the bike and stopped by to watch some of the runners on the Spine Road. Pretty warm conditions by late morning. Good effort finishing that one Camoradi said:

That's the one. I was in the last wave, so had the warmest water and the warmest run. It also meant I had a brilliant finishing funnel as loads of athletes were still hanging around. It was a proper wall of sound! I'd absolutely recommend it as a race. Fairly flat, but interesting bike and run courses and obviously a flat swim... Winner was well under 2 hours, so definitely fast, but also very chilled set-up, friendly marshals and organisers. DB Max are properly good at this stuff.Smitters said:

A motorcyclist crashed into an amateur competitor. All live streamed on YouTube.
Sadly the motorcyclist died at the scene. The camera man and the triathlete are both injured.
As you can imagine it's really overshadowed the event.
