How the &*^% to people row 2k under 7 minutes?
Never done one in over 7 minutes to be honest. whistle

That said, the times you pull on a water rower can't be compared to a Concept II directly, although will provide a proxy.

Some Radio 1 DJ lost a lot of weight on a rowing machine and called it a "Weapon of Mass Reduction." He's right, good on ya for getting one!
Got it for fitness really. At 6'3" and 86kg I am reasonably happy with my weight.

Want to strengthen my legs/back/arms/shoulders - but don't really want to lift weights.

Rowing seems a good thing to do and can get the son into it too.
rowing will help, but you need to do weights too. I'm doing two 40 minute ergs and two weight sessions a week at the moment. The weights improve the ergs. (6'2" and 90kg)

He was hanging around the edges of the Squad then, but mostly coaching Pembroke. At one Mays, he cycled straight into the river, missing Grassy Corner entirely. biggrin (Pembroke were chasing us and had bizarrely expected to bump us, but we were chasing down Caius whom we bumped).
Probably drunk, at regattas he was always scouring the picnic baskets for booze.

40 Minutes !!!!!!!!

yikesyikes

I am currently mixing up very short, very intense bursts of, say 3-4 minuts, a few times a day in addition to one longer 8min+ 2k

40 minutes is just mind boggling.

You get used to it. The middle 20 minutes are not great.

Longest I ever did was 80 mins. That was rare though. 60 and 70 minutes were much more common. I did a few of 3 x 30 mins with 2 mins to stand up and grab a drink in between.

My best advice is to get a heart rate monitor, and work to a heart rate at a specific strokes per minute. 17 - 19 spm and 60 - 70% of your max heart rate will build a good stamina base.

It never gets less boring though. Music and pretty girls in the gym pass the time. I did a lot of it with my eyes closed to help me feel the rhythm, and stop me looking at the clock counting down.

I'm currently doing 10k 3 times a week on the concept 2 as part of my marathon training - as basically i'm just bored of running, plus the gym has pretty girls to look at.

Will echo what others have said - the middle 20 is the nasty bit, after that it seems to hurt less.

My PB at ten is 37.16, if I hadn't been strapped in I would have just rolled off it when I was done........

Three years of rowing for uni and home town here. Any PHers from Southampton Uni Boat Club or Gloucester Rowing Club?

Best decision I made at uni, joined in my second year having realised about easter of my first year that it was unhealthy, expensive and ultimately pointless just lashing it up every night.

Did wonders for my health, self motivation and social life. Good mementos as well - few pots and medals, great friends and I married the novice ladies' biggrin

Re longer ergos: very gifted mate at uni did an hour at a rock steady 1:45 purely because someone had the temerity to suggest he couldn't. That's over 17k in an hour. He wasn't even struggling for the first 40 mins or so bow Not fair.

Very much So!

He's an incredible athlete mind (don't try this at home). Went on to Goldie and GB. Came 2nd in Diamond Skulls 2005 and 2006, losing to some blokes called Wyatt Allen and Mahe Drysdale whistle

You guys are certifiable.

How can anyone row for that long?

I could play tennis for hours and hours. Or bowl a long spell. But rowing for more than 10 minutes just seems like torture to me.

I used to, but cannot understand the appeal unless it's a means to an end, i.e. a nice shiny medal or even better (IMO) a tankard (you can't drink beer from a medal) won in a boat on a river.

I've been Gig rowing for about a year now, trying to put some serious training in prior to the Scillies championships in May.

Does anyone else find that the rowers in the gym hurt your arse after a while?

Funnily enough I've found the seats get less comfortable as the models have progressed. It's probably me getting older as I find these days any more than 20 mins and it's my bum that gives out first - it goes numb.

You can buy neoprene seat for them that does add a little more comfort - although carpet underlay is cheaper.

I tend to use both on the infrequent times I use my C2.

What's gig racing like? I always fancied a go when I was still paddling. They looked heavy old beasts when I've seen them race at Whitby.

I did a dragon boat race a couple of years ago, which was fun.

I haven't raced yet... And it'll be my first time in the sea tomorrow! I joined mid-way through the season after selections so have just been training since then. We train in the docks so off down to Swanage tomorrow for a bit of sea training.

The wooden boats we have are actually very light for their size, we also have a GRP training boat which is hugely heavy. Once you get them moving they actually fly along.

I'm excited about the Scillies in May, it's going to be a decent weekend's drinking with a little bit of rowing thrown in hehe

It is torture, but I hate running even more and it's the only way I know to be properly fit. It pays dividends with other sports; my skiing is miles better for it.
