Its changed a lot since i was last there nobody fishing either. Is it closed season now ? Yes until June 16th on all rivers and lots of lakes.

Before I had kids I used to get massively excited on the build up to it and always took a day of school/work to do it. And with only one exception the 16th of June used to be a big disappointing pile of s t for fishing

I think most stillwaters are open all year round now. I've long given up observing the old closed season on them, there's no magic left in opening day if the banks have been throughly trampled for the past three months. In any case, at this time of year if I'm not fly fishing for trout I'm fishing for tench which are feeding hard now and probably won't spawn until late June or even July.
My club doesn't like people fly fishing the river once the coarse season has opened, so I only fish the river for trout from April-June. Then it's tench fishing until late summer, maybe some barbel in August/September, perch in the autumn, chub through from late autumn to spring. Try to get a few trips to Farmoor for trout in spring/early summer when the massive buzzer hatches start, often fish a local small trout stillwater through the colder months and usually fit a bit of fly fishing for grayling in too.
There's some fishing available all the year.
Next weekend will be a three day fishing trip for tench on a very pretty, quiet, mature gravel pit. Really looking forward to it. Have just taken delivery of new spod and marker rods and need to pick up a bivvy this week.

The thought of lure fishing in warmer climes is much more appealing. Even so that when I go the the Dominican Rep in 3 weeks I'm going to take a telescopic rod and a load of spinners/lures/poppers and fish off the rocks for something to do whilst I drink!!
No smelly bait, 30 degs, turquoise seas, waiter service, shorts and a tan.
That's fishing!! I just got back from a week there and whilst it was work I tend to agree with you. Whilst up to my knees in the water a four foot barracuda leapt out of the sea between me and the beach (ie in less than knee depth) and the tourist fishing boats were coming back with barracuda, tuna etc. Some went off chasing marlin but not sure if they caught any.
