It's a horse race, so neither.

Well obviously, but nobody WANTS to see these horses destroyed. It's not really a fair comparison, much like the " We don't kill athletes when they have an injury" argument.

Any activity carries an element of risk, some more than others - I appreciate that the horses don't get a say in any decision making process.

But when the "risk" of will a horse die turns to which will die. It's time to ponder.

I do enjoy horse racing, but I'm not a fan of the National.

Synchronised should never have run, being a successful Gold Cup horse. No need at all to run it in the National.

Beyond that, thinner fields and easier fences, which I know they're working towards. Pinfaring etc is clearly god awful and I hope it doesn't happen anymore but am frankly scared to google. Terrible, terrible sight seeing a horse fall. Even worse when the poor thing is put down.

Think of the insurance claim, a gold cup winner must be worth a couple of million.
jonjo won't be crying for long he will get a few good jumpers with that money.
Just a point for those that say racing is cruel, synchronised was jumping round on its own when it fell enjoying itself which just goes to prove a horse only jumps because it wants to you can't make a 3/4 ton horse do anything it doesn't want to.

For the hundredth time - we get it, the horses like it. No one says they dont like jumping over stuff. The issue is, when it kills them, should we stop letting them do it. Humans would like jumping out of planes without a parachute if they had no idea you died at the end!

He does have a point (intentional or not) as the horse hasn't a clue what is on the other side of the fence!

I will say again that I'm a massive fan of horse racing.

Not serious? The horse is hardly making an informed decision!

I do wonder if more could be done to treat the horses though.
more could be done but the poor blood supply to a horse's legs and the fact that they stand up pretty much all the time usually makes it unsuccessful and more painful for the horse.

Well, after watching this year's race, I won't be watching or betting anymore on the Grand National. It's the 21st century, and our treatment of animals sometimes is medieval. To those that enjoy it, then fair play, but it's not for me. That grey horse at the end that won was being pushed way beyond its limits IMHO.

The horse knows exactly what its doing, they practice jumping at home , some of the trainers even have national fences on the gallops.
If I was a horse and I had the choice of been a racehorse being spoilt rotten or perhaps being eaten by the dutch French and Germans I know which I would choosebiggrin

Yes, the horse actually enters the race itself, it knows that a couple of horses die each year, it fully understands what's going on. rofl

Horses love racing they come alive and get excited like a dog does when you get its lead out.
Would you not rather they were racing than being served up as frikadellen mit pomme frittes und mayo?biggrin

The horse doesnt know the risk.

And whats with the "it's better than being eaten" argument??? Is dog fighting better than being put in a Korean Kebab????
