Don't feel it works like that, when Hendry was dominating, snooker was more popular, but then media is complicated now.

Lots of times people want to watch the best at what they do, like how popular Bolt is, and Jordan was. The halo players bring in audiences.

Barry Hawkins into the final, proper nervous match at certain stages.

Come on Bazza.

It is unlikely snooker will ever have a dominant player again for 2 reasons. The first is that the standard has risen and any of the top players can beat other top players when they are on form and the second is the changes to the schedule. The new system is likely to cause 'top' players to lose more because they have to play more.

Standard definitely lower this year, many a suggestion of burnout and the like. I do get the feeling the standard has dropped in the last year or 3, but up until then was as good as or better than the 90s IMO.

Although I was only a lad in the 90s smile

I agree that the standard appears to have been lower this year but up until recently it had definitely reached a peak.

Perhaps the point is that the lesser players are now not as lesser as they used to be - hence its much harder for there to be repeat winners.

On the topic of snooker 'dying' - do you think there needs to be more televised events on free TV?

I am a fan but a 'part timer' in that I only watch the Masters, UK and Worlds. Although that is 4 weeks of content a year.

I think it wouldn't be as interesting if snooker was available all the time. As a viewer you need to invest a lot of time and watching 10 hour matches constantly wouldn't really be feasible. The tournaments feel special and TBH I don't really think much about all the stuff that happens in the interim - not least because it mainly happens abroad.

They could shorten the game but then it wouldn't be snooker would it and fewer frames means you don;t really find out who the best is.

I never understand how ppl get so animated about commentators. Its the same with the F1 whinging. I couldnt tell you a single thing a commentator has said all race/match to be honest, they are irrelevent to watching the sport pretty much.

Can't fully agree with that ... Harry Carpenter, Sid Waddel, Ted Lowe, Brian Johnston, Murray Walker, David Coleman, Eddie Waring were all geniuses. The problem is there are too many "say what you see" merchants.

Seems that the remark about the schoolfees was true. Apparently paying lawyers to keep an golddigging ex at bay is rather expensive:

Virgo should buy a decent pair of glasses, so he could have seen that the white was not going in the centre pocket. Instead he decided to shout 'where's the cue ball going' at deafening sound levels. Gets a bit annoying, yes. If Hendry were not sitting beside him, I'd be watching Eurosport right now.

Blimey - did he shag your missus or something? For what it's worth if like to see Hawkins make a game of it, but I suspect it's going to be 18-10 or thereabouts also.
