Yep, seems to be the word on the street. Not really a huge surprise is it? His form the last couple of years hasn't been that good. Last 3 years batting average below:

2010 - 34.57
2011 - 28.72
2012 - 36.87
Considering that only one person said he would and that one person was rounded upon and told how wrong they were? By everybody on the thread? Yer a bit late to try that line!

Don't think I was involved in that discussion, I would have been happy to back you up, the figures speak for themselves.

Be very interesting to find out ultimately whether it's the KP situation or his form. Clearly England have had a poor year, he's struggled for form (this years average is flattered by the WI tons.....averaged 17 against SA) and there's the KP saga.

Personally I think it's his personal form that is his primary reason...there is no place to hide opening the batting and he's clearly struggling a bit....he's too old to drop out and work on his technique over the winter. No way back into the side.

On the subject of KP - 163 yesterday

cricinfo.

Batting was not straightforward on a relaid pitch, especially during the morning session when the new ball seamed and swung enough to excite Somerset's pace attack, but the man whose England career is on hold (at the very least) did what had to be done: he battled through.

From then on, it became a case of how many runs Pietersen would score, whether colleagues would hang around long enough for the visitors to post a truly commanding total and when, or if, Surrey's extremely special No. 4 might lose interest and give his wicket away.

The answers, in the same order, were: 163, from 168 balls with three sixes and 20 fours; not really, because while a return of 317 looks more than handy on a surface which should take a fair bit of turn and may produce increasingly variable bounce, the visitors might have climbed to 400; and not at all, despite taking a blow to his left hand after going beyond 150.

ALL forms is definately a bit of a shocker!

I mentioned on here during the last test that he locked drained and a bit shell shocked and just had the general attitude of "I dont need this crap".

On reflection England havent looked sharp all yr. Not out in the sand, during the Windies or against the Bok. Fielding standards that Strauss himself set were no longer being attained throughout the team. How many catches have England put down since the winter?

So yes a time for change was in the air. I didnt expect him to quit all forms though, that really is a man who has fallen out of love with his job/profession/career/the game.

Straussy...on behalf of all England cricket fans around the world and the 'net, by God we thank you. I think it is fair to say that not a single one of us when you took over ever expected to see this England side top the rankings. You moulded one of the best England teams of all time and lead them to success around the globe. It would seem that you are the very definition of that Englishman noted for being a good man in a crisis and you faced a couple of crackers!

Whatsmore...Ashes, home & away. We salute you Sir and you have our deepest, deepest gratitude.

It's been coming for a while, I guess when you play ok, but the team wins it is all good. But when the team is losing it's way and your own form is patchy - well at 35 it is tough to be seen as the future.

A short period of re building is needed. The core group are good.

Trott as opener with Cook would be my preferred route, but I know others think Trott at three is best left to carry on grinding out OCD 50's every game

211 all out off 46.

Even we can knock these off, surely? Back up to Number 1 if we do as well.

Finn to Smith, 1 run, 140.8 kph, dropped again! Can you Adam and Eve it! It's a genuine nick from a fuller ball and Tredwell at first slip has allowed this straight through his hands, Kieswetter did dive across him but I think Tredwell has seen that all the way and doesn't get anywhere near catching it really
