Idowu hasn't lost his head but he might well be using "the niggle" as a decent excuse to avoid the TeamGB Athletics training camp in Monte Gordo. It's well known that he and Van Commenee (sp?) don't get on. I get the impression he doesn't like the demands that UKA/BOC/TeamGB put on him prior to competition and prefers to do his own thing.

It disappoints me that his health records seem to have been requested via the media.

This football is dire. Absolutely rubbish so far. No real shape. No getting it under control. Mostly kick the way you're playing and then hit it high and hope - they are also seem to be extremely slow compared to either male footballers or proper athletes

can we just get one thing settled before it all starts too, there is to be no reference to an individual "hoping to medal", "medal" is not a verb, or rather it already is, and it means something quite, quite different....

"to podium" is another one the media have started using recently. Imbeciles!

Our left winger learned at the Jamie Carragher school of playing on the left, I see. Stop. Trap ball. Turn through as many degrees as possible to get it on your right foot. Then scoop it. It only didn't look bad because the Kiwi defence was a shambles.

You were asking about the first "scandal".

BBC said:
Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou has been expelled from her country's Olympic team over comments she posted on Twitter which were deemed racist.

Papachristou was due to compete in the London 2012 Games, which officially start this Friday.

But the Hellenic Olympic Committee said her posts mocking African immigrants and expressing support for a far-right party went against the Olympic spirit.

Papachristou has apologised for the "unfortunate and tasteless joke".

As well as the comment on Monday referring to the West Nile virus and Africans living in Greece, Papachristou also reposted a tweet by Ilias Kasidiaris, a politician with the far-right Golden Dawn party, criticising Prime Minister Antonis Samaras's stance on immigration.

Her remarks had sparked calls from the public and within the Greek government for her to be thrown out of the team.

The head of the Greek committee, Isidoros Kouvelos, said the 23-year-old had "showed no respect for the basic Olympian value".

"She made a mistake and in life we pay for our mistakes," he told SKAI TV.

The spirit of the games is about the power of sport over politics, where perseverance and hard work are paid off with medals; where ordinary people can become national heroes.

This ideology has been expanded over the years. In the words of the London2012 official education programme, Get Set: "The Olympic and Paralympic Games are about much more than sporting excellence."

In a statement on her Facebook page and Twitter, Papachristou said she was "very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights".

She apologised to her friends, family, fellow athletes and the national team, but said it would not have been possible for her to compete if she did not support the values of the Games.

"Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races."

The committee said she had been "placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement".

The BBC's Mark Lowen in Athens says Greece is experiencing a sharp rise in racism, with the popularity of right-wing parties like Golden Dawn soaring.

The government has come under pressure to crack down on racism in all domains, including sport, says our correspondent.

Good riddance. Another racist/bigot/idiot exposed by Twitter (the medium of choice for twits along with facebook). I would have had more respect for her if she stood by her comments, no matter how offensive they were. I cannot stand people that back-pedal and feign apology the minute they realise they are going to be punished. To say something you must first think. Words do not form themselves and speak. Everything that comes out of your mouth (or in this case, off the fingertips) is your sole responsibility.

Although I despise these numbskull driven social media outlets, Twitter the most, they seem to be doing a great job in showing the general public just how many imbeciles there.

Eat. Dirt. (admittedly, not the most unattractive photo I could find wink)

There's still time to uncover Darya Klishina's Greek roots, issue her a Greek passport and put her into the team now a space has opened up. Curse Russia for not selecting her!

Sigh, it's ColOmbia.

Very funny though - given the relationship between the countries, I hardly blame them....
