Rude-boy said: hornetrider said: None are easy of course, but perhaps shooting would present an opportunity for the sofa loving layman? My thoughts. Even then though you have to have the innate ability. A good friend of mine is a very fine shot who (for the guns on here) has managed a left and right woodcock 3 times in the last 5 years. He will also regularly get 25/25 on a round (or whatever it is called) of clays when shooting from the hip for a laugh. He speaks in reverential tones about the abilities of a number of other local guns yet none of them would consider themselves worthy of more than enthusiastic amateur level competition. I'm no expert on shooting, but believe that with sports such as this, most of the competitors could shoot the "perfect round" or whatever it's called in training, time and time again. What sets the truly great apart is how they cope with the pressure.

Greg_D said: Whereas, the archery for example would appear to be easier, if you had a god given talent for it, you could just buy the kit and turn up!!! You have to hit a 12.2cm target 70m away accurately, holding a recurve bow perfectly still which is powerful enough to do that accurately needs a bit of practice....arrows dont go in a straight line either

I would think shooting or archery would be the most simple ones.

I would have to say something like handball or volleyball where your lack of ability can be picked up by the team.

I did OK at the cross country and show jumping but the dressage never went so well for me. My horse could do it just fine. The weak link was me. I know everyone will say this of their chosen sports but, generally, the easier they make it look the harder it actually is to do which is largely the point of dressage. I'll admit that its not much of a spectator sport unless you know whats going on.

The pistol shooting is going to cost you alot to take up. Its banned in this country, so you have to go and live somewhere like Switzerland to train. As for the rifle and shotgun events, they cost thousands in ammo over the years (I know I shoot) and there is no sponsership like with other sports. Most of your costs - event entry fees, travelling around the world etc you have to meet yourself.

I think you'll find that the costs thing is true of most of the Olympic sports - you tend not to earn money/get costs covered until you've already made it to international success.

Not necessarily i went to see the mens 10m pistol and the finalists were a mixed bag some incredibly athletic the Portugese 40-50yo with the beer gut who placed 5th overall. Kit is relatively inexpensive £1200 for a Top competition pistol with electronic trigger and near perma consistancy pull. The rounds are relatively inexpsensive its a freestyle shoot so no silly shooting jackets or trousers to breace you into the perfect shooting position, no silly shoes. the majority of these guys were in loose trousers Tshirts and skater shoes... These weapons rely on no scary high power and do not require a FAC so anyone can own one. Id love to get into this sport as its down to your inner skill and ability to control your heart rate and be as relaxed and calm as possible under pressure.
