So went to the heats of the above, and expected Jessica Ennis to run, however she pulled out apparently because she had a gold medal already.
There appear to be several views to this in that she has a gold so nothing to proove, she would be worn out having got the gold, by not running someone else has a chance to get a medal, the paying public have missed a chance to see her, she has taken the place of someone else that could have run etc.
So should she have run or not?

Yes, IMO, she should have run the 100 metres. However it was her choice not to do so & she shouldnt be slagged off for not running.
Stuck between a rock & hard place isnt she?

We could have had a maximum of 3 athletes in the event but we only had 1 other athlete with the qualifying time so she did'nt deny anyone a place.
Frankly she would have been very fatigued and you just cannot go through rounds and expect to compete at that level without being in top condition.

I voted no: - Didn't stop anyone else running.
- 100mH preparation distracted by the "golden girl" winning "gold" - massive media interest, big sponsor commitments, etc.
- No need to tarnish the "image" by not placing in the 100mH.
- Needs to prep for her wedding in Sept (IIRC)

She was not costing another their place and I am surprised that she passed up the opportunity to add to her collection of novelty bathroom pull cords.
I am sure she was/is tired as hell, it's not like she only did a few laps of the track, but unless she is nursing an undisclosed injury or strain I can't see what would stop her at something she obviously can do or else she would not have been entered for it in the first place.
Then again the Algerians seem to have suffered a similar idiocy, slightly worse in their case i will grant you as he never had a hope of doing both events to the finals.
That she chose not to run is a disappointment but it's her body.

i think it would't have done her any harm, but I can understand why she didn't take part. On the one hand it might have been nice to experience competing in the olympic stadium again and it would have been great for British fans, but I can imagaine it would have been very hard to be really motivated considering she had already achieved her goal.
Interestingly, the woman who finished just behind Ennis in the hepathlon hurdles (Zelinka of Canadaa) was seventh in the final tonight.

Starting to annoy me how little press Ben Ainslie is getting comparitive to some others, especially the cyclists. He has virtually matched Steve Redgraves achievements, but is barely getting mentioned. Seems to be a sailing thing, Nick Dempseys silver has barely been mentioned on the bbcs (otherwise excellent!) coverage tonight.

Posted that in the wrong thread, whoops! Though in response the coverage has been very good at explaining the action. Been plenty of wind to get a few good action spots, and the 2 medal races on sunday went down to the last few hundred meters, pretty tense no matter if you understand or not!

However, the track cycling is fast, exiting and drama filled tv gold. Sailing by contrast is boring.
