Mo Farrah seems a good candidate after taking a second Gold in an event Brits (even adopted ones) don't have a great record in.

Wiggins' achievements are remarkable as are a number of others (First female Olympic boxing champion, Chris Hoy's 6th medal, Beth Tweddle's Bronze - just for persevering in the sport!, Murray's remarkable Tennis Gold).

Whoever wins this year, there'll be a lot of losers equally worthy.

This year will be a difficult one to call with some great performances but I would give it Bradley Wiggins with Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis close behind. Andy Murray may also be in the mix particularly if he does well and maybe wins the US Open.

Just getting on the shortlist will be an achievement in 2012. My vote will go to Wiggins, but Farah and Ennis will obviously be strong contenders. Charlotte Dujardin has won 2 Olympic golds but may not even make the cut!

The sporting year isn't over yet, though. Mcilroy is currently leading the PGA, and still has the Ryder Cup to come, Murray could win the US Open and Hamilton could win the F1 world championship. It's fairly safe to say that there won't be any footballers on the list, however.

Wiggins. JE is obviously liked but, post games, I can see her fading pretty fast in the odds. A lot of her raised profile was down to the media picking her as their poster girl....if they dont run with that, she wont stick in peoples minds (not now her gold is diluted amongst so many others)

As much as im more than happy to have an excuse to look at Jess Ennis again I think Ali Brownlee should get it. The guy is immense and his brother is pretty decent too. Its a long way from being a mainstream sport so he aint got a chance though. I mean I think he should win and dont watch him (I get to tired just watching what they do lol)

It really is open - really hard to pick one out of the bunch.

My personal choice would be Wiggins.

Can Team GB really do the team award? Is it arguably a confederation of individuals/smaller teams?

Team Sky could be another name in the hat.

I'm not really a fan but I'll probably go for Wiggins, more for the TdF than the Olympics.

I'd like to see someone like Sir Henry Cecil get a nod for Coach/trainer whatever it is - training Frankel, with everybody having an opinion, whilst battling cancer, at times looking barely alive, is a great thing - and he's a terribly nice chap to boot smile

Would be a popular 'overseas' winner. Though Micheal Phelps statistically greatest of all time will probably seal it.

I suspect Wiggins will sneak it, but frankly there are a lot of people who would have won it any other year.

Popular amongst car geeks, unheard of until the Para road races, forgotten by the general public within a week.

Usain Bolt...3 Golds and a clean sweep for 2nd Olympics running, widely regarded as a living legend...and he did the Mobot.

As about a shoe-in as a shoe-in can possibly be outside of nominating a pair of Nike's for the award.

Coach of the yr...probably Darth Dave, unless they agree not to divide the Olympic coaching teams.

Zanardi *might* get the Helen Rollason award *if* it is eligable to foreigners.

You beat me to it. As a cyclist, I'll be voting Wiggo but David Weir's achievements are unbelievable. I really hope he's nominated and touted as one of the 'Top 10'.

Ben Ainslie's consistency over time has been awesome too. The BBC seemed to forget about him when it looked like it was all going wrong after 4 races at London 2012. Pulling off gold (again) after that start though just made it all the more impressive. bow

& what will happen if Murray wins tonight?

or if Lewis is World Champion again (could happen!)

Wouldn't want to be picking that short list.

Gave up watching when after one year (forget which) the BBC put out a reason why Bob Nudd a fisherman who had been world champion for the Nth time did not get it DESPITE GETTING MOST VOTES (my capitals) that 'it went to the second placed as it represented what most of the voters wanted'
OK so it took a lot of anglers to put in the votes, but by their reasoning Bob Nudd was not a pesrsonality!!!,
Then there was Ryan Giggs who was manipulated into winnig as it was widely thought that it would have been his last season.... that was how many years ago??? nd the bugger is still playing

So thats one show i wont be watching. I doubt is Wiggins will get it, despite th TDF win, fully expect David Weir 4 medals, diff distances and a parlympian as well. BBC goes PC mad again

Going to be a very open race now you throw in Murray.
Hamilton still has a long shot if he wins the F! drivers.

Personally I'd give it to that woman in the double skulls rowing who won gold at her fourth attempt after 3 previous silvers. Now that is 16 years of dedication to achieve your life's ambition.

Edited to say - Katherine Grainger.

For me, If anyone bar Bradley Wiggins wins then its a fking joke, well what I mean is, a lot of amazing achievements have happened this year but no Brit had EVER won the TdF, that and his absolute crushing victory in the Olympic Time Trial should be enough. Winning a cycle grand tour is nothing short of amazing.

I might be stupidly biased being a huge Cycling enthusiast though....

Let's just pray that the list does not contain any loathsome footballers for a change !
Oh hold on - David Beckham might be a nominee for the way he delivered the Olympic Flame in that speedboat.
