I expect there to be 2 or perhaps even 3 Paralympians in the shortlist. Then the only non-Games nominees will be for golf since it's Ryder Cup year. Hamilton might scrape into the top 10 if he wins the WDC.

I think the 10 shortlisted will be:

Mo Farah
Bradley Wiggins
Jessica Ennis
Nicola Adams
Andy Murray
Sir Chris Hoy
Sarah Storey
David Weir
Jonnie Peacock
Rory McIlroy

with Murray, Farah and Wiggo being in the top 3.

I still think it will be Wiggins, apart from the amazing achievement of winning the tour de France he is also helped by riding a wave of increased popularity in cycling in the UK.

To me the fact that Cavendish won before shows there are probably enough cycling fan voters to get him there. The olympic feel good vote will possibly be split between Mo, Ennis and Hoy.

Hopefully Hamilton won't make the list (despite me wanting him to win F1 WDC), personality of a spoiled brat at times.

Could be any of:

Bradley Wiggins
Andy Murray
Jessica Ennis
Mo Farah
Chris Hoy
Ben Ainslie
David Weir
Sarah Storey
Ellie Simmonds
Rory McIlroy if Europe win Ryder Cup.

Hamilton may get shortlisted, but won't win even if he gets WDC. He is far too love or loathe to win a popular vote, even amongst car types.

Some of the above are more likely than others, but genuinely wouldn't like to call it.

Let's just pray that the list does not contain any loathsome footballers for a change !
Oh hold on - David Beckham might be a nominee for the way he delivered the Olympic Flame in that speedboat.
For a change? It has hardly been inundated with footballers.

If you look at the figures I've posted above, Cav won with around 42,000 votes. I'd expect the winner this year will be needing around 150k. There will be a lot more intrest this year, because its been such a great year. I don't think you can underestimate 'girl power' which will help Ennis.

Whatever happens, it will be an excellent nights tv, and probably about 7 or 8 hours long smile

well, there will be plenty to celebrate.

england could yet retain the 20/20 (although it is pyjama pyjama cricket)

ryder cup could sway things.

there a few a shoe-ins for nominees but 7-10 could be any from 30...

Mcllroy (unless he finally wins a major ;-) )and Hamilton might not even make the list - expect olympians to dominate plus Murray (also an olympian of course).

I wouldn't be surprised if they find a way to 'cheat' and award it to "all our olympic and para-olympic athletes".

Even if they win their respective championships, Hamilton and McElroy (sp?) haven't got a prayer.

i doubt there's going to be a single footballer this year!!!

i'm going for wiggo. what andy has done is incredible but i just think PR wise he's got alot to do whilst wiggo will have the olympics and tdf behind him.

ennis is a very very good outside bet

Bradley Wiggins for me. To win Le Tour and then Olympic Gold in little over a week is phenomenal.

I'd say Mo Farah bow

But it is going to be a tough call this year.

tbh as long as it isn't a Footballer I'll be happy for them.

Not the moany moanbag Andy Murray (he's not great....yet, and not sure he ever will be) nor Bradley Wiggins as I thought his comments about medals other than Gold being 'pointless' was rather disrespectful of those who got anything less than Gold, plus I don't like his sideburns LOL...

After that not sure, Mooooo Farah, Jessica Ennis maybe ?

Wiggins, Murray, Farah and Weir are I think the favourites.

Personally I think Wiggins and Murray should be favourites based on their sporting achievements bith having achieved things this year that no one in several generations has done,,,and both also won gold medals. Farah's achievement was incredible but no more so than Kelly Holmes winning 800m and 1500m in Athens...it's not as exceptional in my mind. What Weir did at the Paralympics stands out for me as the greatest achievement of the Olympics or Paralympics I think but I am sure some people would disagree!
