The year Senna died and Damon had to help bring the team out of that disaster and took the fight for the championship down to the last race, where a cheating Schumacher rammed him out of the race to win the championship. F1 that year was a much bigger story than athletics.
Which was why Damon H won SPOTY that year.Bet there were loads of moaners though, just like this year.

Blimey, I thought the dinosaurs were over on NP&E!
Again, huh?as you do on NPE, from the few times i have unfortunately browsed there when sitting on the throne during a particularly long bowl movement, i have somehow picked up on your user name, posting short pointless comments with no attempt at cogent thought or critical thinking to the argument in question, it comes across as somewhat moronic. Just short vacuous disagreeable platitudes.
So stating facts and highlighting successful women sports that stand on their own two feet and offer a desirable product vs. those that are artificial constructs and have a long way to go is being a dinosaur? wtf are you talking about?! please either try to articulate why you feel that way about the topic being commented on or not bother, as you appear a tad bitter that not everyone thinks everything is brilliant or agrees with you somewhat sheltered and naïve student union world view.
Anyhoo i wish you a merry christmas and prosperous new year.
Or perhaps for you it should be happy holidays as the former may trigger you...

In 1994, Damon Hill was SPOTY after finishing 2nd in the F1 championship. The same year, Sally Gunnell was runner up in SPOTY. From 1992 to 1994, Sally Gunnell was undefeated in International events, winning 400m hurdles gold at Olyhpics, World Championship, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Goodwill Games, IAAF World Cup, European Cup. She set British, European and World records. Her World record still ranks in the top ten and is the current British record.
The original brief of SPOTY was this
"The winner is the sportsperson, judged by a public vote, to have achieved the most that year. The recipient must either be British or reside and play a significant amount of their sport in the United Kingdom."

I know it's a public vote for the winner, but who comes up with the pre-determined shortlist? The original brief of SPOTY was this

You can't vote for Ronnie O'Sullivan if he's not on there!

Who was on the judging panel?
The industry panel for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year included former England footballer Ellen White, ex-hurdler Colin Jackson, Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds and ex-Scotland rugby international Chris Paterson.
Sports journalists Charlotte Harpur (The Athletic), David Coverdale (Daily Mail) and Rob Maul (The Sun), were also on the 2023 panel, in addition to UK Sport chair Kath Grainger and broadcaster Holly Hamilton.
Representing the BBC were director of sport Barbara Slater, head of TV sport Philip Bernie and Sports Personality of the Year executive producer Gabby Cook.

....Until they have to stop selling tickets for the 'major' games for £3 and letting in school kids at every game for free to boost attendances and then claim it as some sort of sign of popularity, despite the primetime slots its given by the bbc, i think it can be deemed as such, lets not mention the quality on display.
In time hopefully it will be on par with womans golf, tennis, and athletics (cricket is getting there) in quality and popularity, and self sufficiency (well athletics full stop isn't really self sufficient financially), all of which are very good products in there own right. i have my doubts though.
Hmmm. BBC using SPOTY to promote the only sport it can afford to cover extensively. Who knew... But well done to Mary Earps who barely anyone had heard of two years ago and wasn't up against too many sporting titans in the last six. Women's football in general may become a mainstream sport one day but right now it isn't, apart from showpiece (mainly England) games attended by large numbers of schoolgirls with cheap tickets. I'm willing to be convinced if anyone knows what sort of viewing figures are achieved compared to say, darts, especially for club games? I'm certain it isn't in the same league as men's football, rugby (either), cricket, F1, golf, tennis, boxing or athletics...
Maybe Sky sports should take over SPOTY?

SPOTY is a fantastic BBC tradition which hopefully will go on and on. I’m in the USA but looking forward to watching on catch up.
For anyone that is interested Ciara Mageean has been named the 2023 BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
She had a cracking year with Irish records at 800 and 1500m, the former not really being her distance.
She had the measure of Laura Muir on several occasions so here's to another good year at the Olympics.

It used to be a show the showcase world sport, you had all sorts on there, they made a huge effort to make it about all sports. Who can recall the Ali stuff, Barry Sheene riding his bike into the studio, some of the gimmicks,m it used to be brilliant.
Sadly the BBC are now minnows in terms of covering sport and tend to push these awards towards sports they show pretty exclusively. And the BBC have also been on a gender balancing mission since they were outed as being particularly useless with the gender pay gap years ago, so since then they relentlessly push female sport onto the general public who just think it is because it is good, this not necessarily the case, the BBC are pushing this to push their own agenda.
They are the same with mental health, every day the BBC is awash with stories about mental health, I have less issue with this, but it is a clear agenda from senior management. I know it needs highlighting but compared to other news outlets there is far more of it on the BBC.
Be very aware that the BBC are very much not balanced in their ways of presenting everything, some things, yes, but they also have very clear and obvious bias in certain areas. And remember also you are paying for this via a very obvious tax, so it SHOULD be utterly unbiased.
None of this is bad, as long as you realise what is going on
