Another dig at the mods.

Why on earth isn't this thread in the lounge ? Or even NP and E!

The OLYMPICS is the single biggest event on Earth and is about far more than Sport.

The attention this thread is getting is pitiful because it is simply in the wrong place and it undervalues this wonderful carnival and diminishes PH and it's members too.

Rant over :-)

Eh...?

There is no 'Biggest event on Earth' section, so it's in the Sports bit - because the Olympics is about sport...

If there were a 'Biggest Event on Earth' section - the Goodwood Festival of Speed would be in it - for sure.

It belongs in the sports section.

Jut like a world cup thread would live n the football section.

The last thing we need is the NP&E folk polluting the thread.

Before you know it it'll be a debate about immigration, devolution and Maddie McCann.

I realise it is the Daily Mail but its the comments about warning swimmers not to open their mouths in the water that are more worrying - how on earth is that going to be possible.

What a joke these Olympics are. Banned participants, dodgy accommodation, ramshackle construction issues, polluted water for some events, and the IOC looking more like FIFA every day.

its good to see that the Olympic committee have had their lawyers pouring over the athletes agreements and got them thoroughly on lock down. now I get that a lot of businesses spending a lot of money on advertising, but this year they seem to have blocked any athletes private sponsors from doing any promo for their athletes until 3 days after the games.

obviously the big names (bolt, farah, gay.....) all have big multi million pound sponsorship deals, but what about the athletes from minority sports? they need private sponsors to survive in their sports and the Olympics is the one of the few times that these small sports actually get reasonable screen time and additional interest from the general public. I can see some small sponsors thinking to themselves- whats the point? this is the only time they probably get any real return on their advertising.

It is a joke. Athletes being robbed at gun point. The aussises refused to take the accommodation because it was a st pit, then relented, then all had to evacuate as it caught fire

Some made the point that you are more likely to lose a medal for naming a sponsor than for dopping. The Rule 40 is a joke. They are not allowed to use the terms "2016" or "Summer" in any social media remarks!!!

This, and previous Olympics have gone a bit like horse racing. You just don't know what you are watching is genuine or not.

Right shall we have some good news or happy news to talk about?

Greg Rutherford tweeted the other day about having had the two best jump sessions a couple of weeks out from the final. No mention of distances and he wasn't competing so I am guessing he has laid down some blinders in training.

The men's track cycling team have un-officially broken the world record in training.

Plus the best thing about the Olympics, aside from two weeks of free to watch wall to wall sport is we get to listen to Michael Johnson talking sense about everything. I could listen to him describing some paint dry and it would be interesting. Total legend.

I am deeply hoping that Claire Balding is hosting the Swimming coverage with Foster and Becky A too and not that bloody Helen Skelton.

They've revised the logo especially for Rio in light of the contamination:

Well, the Olympics starts today and I still feel this thread belongs elsewhere.

Not getting the attention it deserves :-(

I think it will pick up some traction from Friday onwards, once the opening ceremony kicks off, the general public will start to get interested.

I know all my friends that are involved are currently in rio. some of the pictures look pretty cool. the canoe slalom racing is on pretty early, racing starts early next week on Monday. need to properly check out the time differences and when I'll be able to watch stuff.

I'm excited!

The time differences blow. Most of the big events have been scheduled for prime time US so they are on early morning 2:00AM - 5:00AM.

I want to see the big swim events, especially those with Phelps, the 10m diving, the Heptathlon, Fly Mo, Big Greg in the LJ, men's and women's 100 and 200m. I'll stay up/get up early for those and catch the rest on record.

Really hope to see Phelps get at least one individual gold, really want Ennis-Hill and Rutherford to retain their titles. Heptathlon has the very real prospect of a GB pair on the podium and even 1st & 2nd although Briannie Theisen-Eaton will be looking to spoil the party.

When the Eaton's have kids that is going to be one hell of a set of DNA they get.

a) you are preaching to the choir

b) even those of the choir who might be inclined to agree have heard plenty now

It's a bit ironic really. We might have to take some form of PED to actually watch it.
