You've named possibly the least attacking player in the current era before Djokovic and RG which doesn't favour attacking players due to the slow surface.

This is 20 years ago, maybe you've forgotten what tennis used to be like. I was 7 years old and remember this match (and most of the others between Sampras and Agassi). I've got Djokovic on the other screen, his rallying groundies are significantly less penetrative. They have far more spin and are loopy. I'm sure if modern players wanted to they could hit the ball harder but with their fully western grip, wrist flexibility and swing arc not to mention strategy they don't need to hit it hard.

Out of interest what's your definition of hitting hard? Actual ball speed or swing speed?

It's not because they're more composed but because they have more time + also covering more ground between points and some obvious technical changes in the game that's gradually happened in the past 20 years.

Please consider the facts -

Modern players stand further behind the baseline, they hit the ball with more clearance over the net, they play on a slower surface and they're fitter so they can allow themselves to stand further behind the baseline but still track down the ball with their incredible defence.

Also you have to consider Sampras played with a near 14oz 85 sq inch racket with gut and somewhere around 1800 rpm. I'm assuming that you have played tennis longer than 2 decades where poly was not around. My first proper racket as a junior was a 93 Volkl with gut and I still have it. The dwell time on the ball is tiny, hitting topspin with a western grip continually is hugely difficult with that tiny head where you shank all the time.

Djokovic uses a 100 sq inch (same racket I have used for the past 4 seasons) with a poly hybrid and weighs 12oz, rpm somewhere near 3000. Huge racket head speed a fully western grip. It is a fact that with a 2oz loss of racket weight and a much thinner contact on the ball he is not going to be hitting the ball as hard but his consistency + angles are far greater than that of Sampras.

The biggest change isn't the surface, fitness or rackets but string tech. The control you can now get with the strings is ridiculous compared to the previous era. With gut you had feeling and you either hit the ball hard flat or slightly less hard flat. Now it's completely dead, you find the touch by putting more spin and finding the angles. Feeling the volleys is much tougher with Poly and that's why some of the best doubles i.e Bryans still play with full gut.

Federer is the only top player who has successfully played in the previous and current era. Everyone spoke about Fed going from a 90 to 97 recently but that's his second head upgrade, he actually went from a 85 to 90 because he was shanking on both wings as he was trying to utilise the poly hybrid but the head size was too small. He has lost a few MPH on his serve and forehand but found more consistency, the huge kick serves etc that we now take for granted even at club level was a massive skill 15 years ago with the old string, timing had to be perfect.

Tennis used to reward attack and hitting winners. Now it rewards point construction, court positioning and fitness. Is one better than the other? Not really but I don't buy now is the best as now is just a different best to the previous best.

How can you say they're greatly exaggerated if you have never played with gut?

Pete should have switched to what exactly? And why?

Ok if you're not trolling you're just an arm chair tennis fan. Which is fair enough but you seem to refute any other opinion on this tennis thread as if you have a lot of experience of which you clearly don't.

No one who plays tennis at any level worth considering what string they use talk about "synthetic" strings because there are loads of man made strings from nylon to kevlar and anything inbetween. Synthetic strings have been around for decades but they didn't change the game, poly strings did. Before poly there nothing that was consistent like gut. No doubt you're going to argue this with some anecdotal evidence but I guess that's what these forums are for.

Murray really boils my piss when he plays in this fashion. People have paid big money to watch him play, not slouch around with a face like a slapped arse. I reckon his first serve percentage is running at about half of mine, and I'm rubbish. Very very poor for a professional sportsman.

Utter tripe again. Name me some professionals that used non poly synthetics, as you said if the difference is negligible there must be loads out there. How was it for you playing your pre poly, multi, hybrid synthetics, what characteristics did you find that shone?

I can see you've got great opinion on many things, you can't have a real job with that post count.

So that's a yes in the name of charity then?

Yes at the ripe age of 28 I have a few musculoskeletal issues but fortunately that's from being over active rather than sedate. I'm good enough to have a decent LTA rating and play BUCS for 6 years. No doubt you're better so if you can get away from the computer then lets make it happen.

I would love to come along and watch this please.
Once again Moose, anyone that has an opinion other than your own is wrong and so not worthy of being involved in a discussion with you because you are so far above anyone else.
I had the misfortune of stumbling on a McLaren thread the other day about the 570S you were involved in banging on with that boring monotonous tone about why McLaren didn't put a manual gearbox in the car - the way you were seen off by quite a few of the chaps on there was epic.
I'll pay £100 to your chosen charity if you do turn up and a further £100 every set you take off this chap who can quite clearly play...

What you can make 31,000 posts on a forum but can't send an email? I asked first so I'll wait patiently otherwise I'll take that as a decline and your mouths writing cheques your body can't cash.

Oh don't be a spoil sport Moose. I was looking forward you pitching up with your wooden racket in the press still, your Dunlop green flash shoes and a nice bottle of Robinsons barley water.

Good to see Mr moose being a gent about the proposal however a 10 hour trip to Bath isn't quite tempting to settle an internet annoyance. We'll leave it as an open challenge for now, I don't have any indoor courts here but if I'm going to be in the near vicinity then I'll update the thread. Why not have a few others to make a tournament of it?

Nothing out the norm for Moose just the usual arguments with everyone . Actually take a look over on the Porsche forum where he has more enemy's now than ISIS and he wonders why he don't get a full time Journo job.
It's quite odd that you don't see Meaden and the likes causing fights with people.....banghead
