Ahh apologies - thanks for the correction there. Murray is the best sportsman to come out of Scotland without a doubt.

Given the quality of his opponents over his years as a pro its amazing a guy from Dunblane has got to the top of tennis.

Again - well done sir - truly amazing.

I would argue he is the best ever sportsman to come out of Britain.

Henman at his best wouldn't have been worthy of sniffing the steam from Murray's st.

Bearing in mind the era he is playing in the guy is amazing. His goals now must be to win the ATP finals, the Aussie open and the French...plus as many more majors as he can muster.

I really want to see him do this and it would cement his place as one of the greatest of all time. The only blot at the moment is the amount of major finals lost against the number won and that people may look at him as the poorest of the "big four"!

I don't really see Wawrinka as part of the "big 5" as he is too inconsistent, albeit a match at the top level on his day.

We are very lucky to have Andy to support but I enjoyed the Henman years as well despite the multiple semi loss disappointments in majors and that he was not at Andy's level....still like the dying serve and volley game.

Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Chris Hoy, Stephen Hendry etc might disagree.

Well done Andy.

Hopefully the next few years he wins a few more grand slams to add to the collection.

Fantastic achievement by Andy Murray and a well deserved reward for both his ability and his hard work. Hopefully he'll be able to stay at the top of the rankings for a little while as realistically neither Roger nor Rafa are likely to be number one ever again and I think Murray has the beating of Djokovic providing his head's in the right place (i.e. when he's focused and believes he can win).

Not so sure I agree with some of the comments about where this places him in the all-time list though. IMO comparisons across the eras are pretty meaningless and all a player can really do is beat his peers who are competing at the same time; Murray's done that and as both a multiple grand slam winner and world number one his place in tennis history is assured (and deservedly so).

Ths is a bit of a st comment really.

How would McEnroe, Borg or Rosewall have played at their best against Murray now? Probably not as good as Henman, and that's the point - you can't make comparisons across the generations, only within the generations and to that end Henman kept coming up against Lleyton Hewitt, generally recognised as the greatest fighter of his generation, and Pete Sampras, the 'then' greatest player ever seen.

Try this suggestion for a question; given how Murray's achiements and ability have affected the rest of British Tennis in his time, how far would Murray have got were it not for Henman's achievements? Murray has repeatedly gone on record saying that Henman was the aspiration to him as a pre-teen and teenager and it is credit to not only Murray's hard work but also the levels of Rafa, Roger and the Joker that Murray has gone on to surpass in some style Henman's achievements.

But Henman not being not being 'worthy of sniffing the steam from Murray's st' ? I think Andy Murray himself would be pretty disgusted by your statement.

Would you, if the opportunity presented itself, make that statement in person to either Tim or Andy......?

Try and answer this last question honestly and then perhaps consider the things you post in the context of a real life conversation otherwise you are indeed guilty of being a 'keyboard warrior' hiding behind the anonimity and scant protection of the internet.

Huge congratulations are due to Andy Murray in particular for becoming World Number 1 but also Mens British Tennis as a whole this past couple of years for a huge increase in their ability and standing.... but will Jamie Murray still be able to gloat just a little? Grand Slam Winner? Did that before you bruv! Number 1 in the World? Been there too bruv!

I didn't say he was....but I agree with the man who said he might just be....Steven Hendry yes I think that his record was amazing also!

Anyway MUZZA HAS JUST WON THE PARIS MASTERS!!!

against a player who was having a great tournament and made Cilic look average in the semi's. Case in point again!

Djokovic has "congratulated" Murray on Twitter. I think this is where pro tennis crosses the line and becomes a little disingenuous. Djokovic is not retiring and no doubt very motivated to become the best again (some might say he still is). It's this gentlemanly facade Federer brought in wearing bloody cardigans on centre court etc which others seem to be following in.

It's not like a tournament victory though i.e Murray wins Wimbledon and that's the end of that chapter. 2016 Wimbledon will never happen again. The fight for the number 1 spot is a continuous and Djokovic knows Murray is the only competitor to him getting that spot back. I like you have no proof of Djokovics' motivation but these guys are fiercely competitive, it doesn't mean they're sts. If Djokovic didn't congratulate Murray I certainly wouldn't think less of him but making some public statement is attention seeking at the least. He could have easily sent Murray a personal message if it was sincere.

To me it appears to be more of a sentiment to bolster his image as a "gentleman" rather than genuine happiness towards Andy's achievement.

Anyone going to the WTF next week? I've left it late but there are still tickets available so I'm thinking of going either Mon, Tues or Wed, will have to be the afternoon session. The problem is, I'm coming from the north west. I'd drive there and back but my car is due a service so I probably shouldn't do a 400 mile round trip. The cheapest off-peak train gets in Euston at 11.59. I think the afternoon sessions start at 12 but isn't there a doubles match first? I'm not bothered about that. Then I'd just get a train home in the evening. Does this plan sound doable?

A couple of years since I've been but you're right, there's a doubles match followed by a singles match in each session and from memory the singles matches in the afternoon session don't start before 2pm (so could be a bit later if the doubles is a close match but if the doubles finishes quickly there's a delay and then a 2pm start for the singles). So yes, what you're proposing is doable albeit you could find yourself hitting the rush hour on the way home; not sure what the service to the North West is like but on the East Coast mainline it's not unusual for people to struggle to find seats at peak times so my advice would be to make sure you've a reserved seat for the trip back North!

I've always enjoyed our visits to the O2 for the World Tour Finals but have to say it will be slightly strange to have no Roger Federer competing this year....

Djokovic is a lucky b*****d, gets drawn in a far easier group and then gets Goffin for his third match in the groups as Monfils withdraws with injury. Goffin is a bit short on confidence of late and has to go in to the tournament with no match play for a couple of weeks.

Murray gets Nishikori, Cilic and Wawrinka...i realise its luck of the draw but Djokovic gets on my nerves and if he manages to get year end no1 it will be a big anticlimax for Andy.

Andy is also playing not so great tennis...first serve percentage not good and a bit passive at times....amazIng he can play his C game and still beat these guys but I hope he can pick it up now as giving the mental edge back to Djokovic is not good, he needs to nail the coffin shut.....theres a little something at stake here!

Then again I wouldn't bet against Muzza delivering another first...come on Andy!

Good lad Andy has beaten everyone in the 'Group of Death' whilst Novak gets through the cake walk draw yet again. Hope Nishikori will drag their match for 3hours+ tomorrow.

Yep I'm hoping he will as well....Nishikori a bit off the boil against Cilic though, but hoping its because he knew he was already through and conserving energy scratchchin

I just want to see Djokovic having a hissy fit and smahing a racket or three...or with any luck every one in his bag so he can't carry on the spoilt little s**t ranting

Andy deserves to end the year as no1
