As above, try everything. When you pick up a gun you like, that's a starter irrespective of the name on the side.

I've got a 20 year old 686 and a 10 year old Mk60. Both do the job for me.

I first bought a Browning, thinking I would love it. On shooting it a few times and having a fit, it was the worst decision I could have made. I then bought a Beretta, and it is the best decision! Browning and Miruko are one in the same, and fit almost identically to. Usually, people find either Browning fit or Beretta fits

Quick question to the rifle shooters on here as I have never had to sell a rifle before.

Is it just like selling a shotgun, filling out the paperwork, sending a letter to the firearms department, with the added part of checking that they have a free slot in the correct calibre for the rifle?

I think I need to put my .22 up for sale to raise some money for unexpected house work frown

When selling a rifle, you need to check that the buyer has a slot on their FAC for the caliber of rifle you are selling.

You then fill in the details of the rifle on the buyers FAC.

Then inform your firearms licensing office that you have sold the rifle. If you want to keep the slot to buy another rifle of the same or different caliber, now is the time to inform them, if you don't ask them you will loose the slot.

After a taster session at Ashcombe clay ground I decided I'd like to turn it into a hobby, so I filled in my shotgun licence application last week and had my visit from the FEO today. She was happy with the cabinet I had installed and she said just have to wait for it to turn up now, could be up to a month or so (Devon & Cornwall).

So the hunt for my first gun begins! I'm looking at spending up to £1000, but hopefully nearer to £800.
Can anyone with some experience point me in the right direction?
I'm about 5ft7, average build. I want the gun to be able to be used by my partner who is smaller than me.

Would a silver pigeon suit my frame?
Miroku?
Pick up and try various guns and try not to get too hung up on the make, find one that fits first. I have a 1982 Beretta 686 Sport which just felt right, and it's served me well since I bought it 10 years ago.

I'm looking for a new shotgun, if anyone sees a sensibly priced 686 Silver Pigeon 1 please let me know. Would consider new or used, doesn't have to be a Sporter but would be nice.

How does the reflex sight work for you also how much do you think the sling swivels are for the stock and pump area ?
I would go for an EOTech, just brought a few back from the US for mates, and one is now on a shotgun.
Thanks Smack - here is one of your EOTech's on my new 12G. Was a bit lively when it was zeroed with slug last week, can't wait to enter a comp at Bisley with it.

Have heard they're very effective on rabbits, possums etc. I use the 40gr Win subs which are a lot cheaper, my 22 likes them and they knock bunnies over fine as well.
Funny thing is the 'new' ones were cheaper than the original 40 grain ones - £42.50 per 500 for the new versus £49.99 for the original. Weird.
I've had problems with these, both in quality control, and having several fail to fire, or drop short, and the new ones seem to be less effective at dropping rabbits, strange I know, being heavier, but they seem to leave more rabbits injured, and worryingly able to run off, even with a solid chest shot.

Butt Zero was supposed to have been available for it, but I've no idea who to ask! The next question is what to use as targets???

The only ranges at Bisley currently cleared for slug are Short Siberia and Butt Zero.
S. Siberia is hired out by the Police almost every weekday and used for matches at weekends, so that's usually impossible to get.
Butt Zero can be hired by the half day, or occasionally by the hour (at lunchtimes usually) by NRA members.
In addition, the NRA TS rep, James Harris, organises days on Butt Zero for practise, training, etc. so it might be a good idea to start with him and go from there.

Sometimes a few of us get together and hire it for 1/2 day to spread the cost but it's often difficult trying to get 2 or more people to agree to the same day/time! It costs £69 to hire for 1/2 day but you do get use of both bays so you can get quite a few things done.

There are turning targets on both bays but no steels to hire. James usually brings along some steels for his days.

Depends what you want to practice, but for sighting in and running through the TS matches, it's perfect.

My license came through last week, so I took a trip to the local shop. Tryed about a dozen guns in the shop, and worked it down to about 2 or 3 guns.
My favourite that felt the best and the one I kept coming back to was a Beretta 686E sporter. Any knowledge on these before I go back Monday and hand over my cash?

The other contenders were a Browning Cynergy Classic or a new silver pigeon 1.

I'm no expert as I've only had my certificate since January this year. I had a go with several guns before buying my 686E and have been very pleased with it and happy with my decision. I also have a Beretta Ultralight and a 20g Silver Pigeon that my Wife and Daughter use and I only ever use the 686E as it's just right for me.

If it felt the most comfortable for you then I'd go for it.

Interesting, do you get the Aussie-made (Olin) Winchester rimfire there or the US made stuff? I'd never had any problems with Aussie Winchester rimfire but have heard the American stuff isn't as good.

Winchester 22LR ammo I've used includes 37.5gr and 40gr subs, 40gr powerpoint, 37.5gr laser, 37.5gr superspeed - so its a reasonable cross-section!

I shot loads of the Aussie made Winchester in the 80-90's, and never had a problem.

Well a massive thank you to the Herts police - after a move it was deemed that unless I could find a club, I would have to get rid of my rifle. No club has space currently, so off the .22 went, to be replaced by an FAC air rifle.

It took a few days for the variation to come through, so I am now the owner of this:

It's a bit rough, but some love should bring it back nicely.

I also brought this a little while back off a PH'er friend... Something fun!
