The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters

Hi un1corn, I can answer a few of your questions:
1) yes, you can go on your own. Some ranges have 'claymate' which has a delay on the clay release button. Means you can call the bird and then have time to ready yourself. Depends where you are in the country. I know of 3 places near-ish to me (I'm in Surrey)
2) some places have set shoot days/times, other places are open for practise. Just google away and you should find out.
3) If I remember correctly, claymate is about 30p a clay dahn sarf. Shells are about 17p-20p each? Not a cheap hobby but lots of fun.
4) S1 is worth the kerfuffle.

Just starting my collection in the US and taking full advantage of the right to excessive gun ownership. I only do target shooting at the range, can't be bothered with hunting any more and the bird days over here are rubbish compared to the ones I had in the UK.
So far all I've bough is a Beretta 92FS and a Glock 17. Both of which I like a lot. I've also started an AR15 build but not far into that. Should be ready in January. Using mainly stag and spike tactical bits with some custom stuff. So far I've got the barrel, upper and scope sorted.
Once that's done I'm after a Remington bolt action and a 1911. Then I'm done for a while.

Yeah I'm not really in to endless customisation, at least I don't expect to. I'd rather have a decent barrel and maybe tweak the trigger or something, but otherwise live it pretty much stock - again, this will be working gun, not some range queen. With that in mind, that was the inclination to go with a semi with the .17hmr being bolt for longer ranges, but the semi giving the option of the second shot at closer ranges.
I'd have a look at the Marlins in that case - either the tube-fed Mod.60 or various mag fed versions. I'm told there is a simple trigger mod involving the spring from a bic pen which makes it much more useable.Just make sure the 'follow up shot' ability doesn't turn into wasting the first few shots, its still better to make the first one count. I've seen some classic trigger-happy 10 shot misses in my time, which is funny to watch but not overly useful.
Another thing to be aware of is that semis sometimes don't cycle properly with subsonic ammo, so if you're planning to be stealthy you might have to experiment with a few flavours to find something it cycles.

Which accessories and from where?
level 10 fore end, BAD lever, breaching choke, oversize mag ejection, larger mags. All tooth and nail armoury stuff from the US but you can get them from theshootingshed in the UK and he does some customisation as well if you have a quick google. Are you into PSG?

I miss living in US, I managed to get quite the collection whilst I was there and coming back here to the dizzying heights of semi-auto .22lr ownership was quite a shock! So far all I've bough is a Beretta 92FS and a Glock 17. Make sure you post pics of your AR build when it's done as I'd like to see that. Enjoy the freedom of proper gun ownership as well Where abouts are you?

Totally agree, spray and pray is amusing but not terribly productive!gingerbeard said:

Yes... I'm a member at Phoenix in Sussex and I'm very tempted by a Bora...Are you into PSG?

It certainly seems a good gun for those not wanting to spend a lot on an M2 etc but it is quite plasticky. I shot it this weekend and it all worked well, far better than any Hatsans that I have seen. The one thing that was slow was shooting 'load one, shoot one' as you have to place the cartridge into the barrel before closing the bolt rather than just throwing it in as you can with a semi-auto but with practice it should get better. Also needs some work on the mag well to let the magazine drop free but should get that sorted with a dremel in no time.
Unfortunately I am in the Midlands so a bit far for you to have a look at mine but for the money I am happy with it

Had a great afternoon walking the fields and woods with friends today.
I got 2 Pheasants and a Woodcock and everyone else got at least one or two Pheasant each.
It was a little chilly and damp but nothing decent clothing and a swig of Port couldn't cure
Glad you're getting on well with it mate I got 2 Pheasants and a Woodcock and everyone else got at least one or two Pheasant each.

Just ordered a few more bits for it so I'll start taking some pics as the build progresses. I'm in Ohio, so no tiny magazines but semi auto only, which is fine with me.Make sure you post pics of your AR build when it's done as I'd like to see that. Great, I'll look forward to it. I lived in Painesville, OH whilst I went to Uni there for 4 years although I spent more time hunting than studying. I'd love to get back there for proper seasons and general way of life. Are you there long term?GravelBen said:

Rimfire boys - Ruger 10/22, Rem 527 or a boltie Cz452 / Anschutz 417? For vermin not punching paper. Would be the general use gun, backed up by CZ/Sako/Anschutz 17HMR
I'd go for the CZ or Annie out of those, far nicer rifles (though what I actually did was save a lot of money and buy a Savage Mk2 instead). If you want a semi the Marlins are generally considered the pick of the bunch - factory trigger is almost as horrible as a 10/22 but at least they're accurate.
10/22s are good if you like to play around swapping over different parts to modify/personalise it, as there are heaps of bits available. The downside of that is you end up spending twice what the rifle was worth just to make it shoot as well as others do from the factory.
I intend to! The CZ is indeed a remarkably nice rifle for the pitiful prices they go for. It's now given me serious consideration to remaining with the brand for my .17hmr at least, even if I do defect elsewhere for the 223/243.
Likewise the Zoli, seemingly still sneered at for not being one of the big brands, yet blimey what a lovely bit of kit.

Yip, they are nicely finished rifles and handle well. Accuracy is just as good from cheaper brands like Savage and Marlin (and Savage have the best factory trigger I've used), but I can't deny my brother's CZ452 is prettier!
The Zastava rimfires are excellent value too, a lot cheaper than a CZ (here in NZ at least) and the ones I've used shoot well.

Ironically Savage seem to be more expensive over here, and Marlin somewhat derided for being cheap. As it is, £295 got the CZ with a Sak mod and Richter scope, so I can't complain too much! The Zastava rimfires are excellent value too, a lot cheaper than a CZ (here in NZ at least) and the ones I've used shoot well.
