I'm not sure this is knee jerk legislation, it seems to me that someone has been waiting for an excuse to get this through and is rubbing their hands in glee that they can now do so in the firm belief that the public in general will support them, as they are "doing something" about the terror threat. In reality they are doing nothing except punishing the law abiding minority for no good reason other than that they can.

However, I haven't seen any public reaction about how guns are "bad", it seems that people have woken up to the fact that terrorists will do what they do. It seems to me that this would have been a whole lot more difficult in the UK as the ability to source an assault rifle is severely limited as we have a major win in that we are an island so access is by default limited to ports and airports which have people looking funny at you if you have an AK sticking out your hand luggage. Whereas in mainland Europe it is pretty simple to cross borders without even realising it, so smuggling the hardware that they used is simpler.

I would really like to have a go at deer stalking. Does anybody have any experience of this, particularly for the novice/ newbie.

I have had a my shotgun license for a number of years and shoot clays. I have also been to a local rifle range and used .22 and .308 rifles. I did speak to the person that runs the range and he said that he no longer get involved in deer stalking.

Any advice would b greatly appreciated.

Yup, piece of cake in within the Schengen as there are no border checks, and very few on the borders of that.....although there is that greater risk of being caught via spot checks, if someone was to 'try it on' getting a few from t'other side through the ports.
Of course, the EU numpties that don't want to see the grand EU 'project' master plan fall apart are doing this purely to deflect away that very issue....instead of doing the decent thing and holding their hands up and admitting it's a clusterfk and we need to scrap the disaster that is the Schengen nonsense.

Not that I've ever done deer stalking but here are few things I've gleaned:

1) there will no doubt be professional stalkers in your area that make a living taking people out. A quick google came up with http://www.westcountrydeerservices.co.uk/ but I dont know them at all.

2) join BASC, they run courses on stalking and are there to help people get into shooting. They have always been very helpful when I've tried. Shooting insurance is part of the membership fee.

3) try somewhere like gunsonpegs; they might have a few places to try.

Thanks for the details for West Country Deer Services. Spoke to them and sound like just what I want. Hopefully sort something out in the New Year.

I wish, cheapest carbines are £200, snipers £750 plus in the UK. If you see any cheaper please pm me!
Well the licence came through this morning. So now I am the proud owner of a Mosin M38 and Ruger 10/22. Can't wait for tomorrow!

because it's annoying, none of my guns have it, I'll always forget, it doesn't work if the guns dropped and most of all..

my safety is a broken gun

Very nice. Have been thinking about a 20 bore myself. Will be interested to hear your views once it's had an outing.

Fair enough. Different strokes and all that. I like mine to all have it. I always know where I am with it.

A Father’s Advice.

If a sportsman true you’d be
Listen carefully to me.
Never, never let your gun
Pointed be at anyone.

That it may unloaded be
Matters not the least to me.
When a hedge or fence you cross
Though of time it cause a loss

From your gun the cartridge take
For the greater safety’s sake.

If twixt you and neighbouring gun
Bird shall fly or beast may run

Let this maxim ere be thine
“Follow not across the line.”
Stops and beaters oft unseen
Lurk behind some leafy screen.

Calm and steady always be
“Never shoot where you can’t see.”
You may kill or you may miss
But at all times think this:

“All the pheasants ever bred
Won’t repay the price for one man dead.”

Keep your place and silent be;
Game can hear, and game can see;
Don’t be greedy, better spared
Is a pheasant, than one shared.

Indeed. Safety first. Which is why I like to know where I am with all my guns. Particularly double gunning on a grouse moor with beaters, flankers, other Guns and my loader (and often wife or child) in close proximity. In the fast and furious action, where it is not me loading the gun, being handed something which I have a high degree of confidence has the safety engaged is a comfort.
