The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters
Discussion
TNT have effectively pulled out of moving guns & ammo in a cost effective manner. The GunTrade Association has for many years negotitated a contract with them on 'our ' behalf. Being on the Isle of Wight this has been of particular importance to my business as TNT surcharge ordinary parcels even though we are only 10 miles from the mainland with a Portsmouth postal code and an arctic comes over each day.
Each consignment now has to be treated individually and priced (no online booking) I had a quote for a shotgun to Peterborough the other day of £232 plus vat - it was just under £12 previously.
There was no notice given - we all had a letter on Saturday 10 Jan and the service change was WEF the next monday - I have been unable to send guns off the Isle of Wight since and whilst Parcelforce offer an alternative we have no existing relationship (having used TNT for over 30 years) and they want 6/8 weeks to open an account. The manner in which TNT has acted in quite unbelievable for a firm of its size and reputation and clearly the idiots that run it have given no consideration to the knock on effect that its having on peoples businesses and indeed personal lives. It has effectively distorted the market for lower priced shotguns advertised via the internet, stalled the private sale of shotguns that necessitate an RFD transfer and has mean't that I cannot offer a timely gunsmithing service to my customers as we outsource to specialists on the mainland. Christ only knowns what will happen with warranty claims on new guns unless a cost effective solution can be found - as the seller I am responsible to the customer - how can I afford a £230 cost for transports when I might have only made £100 out of a sale ????
I cannot understand why TNT did not give notice and why they would want to treat/discriminate in this way. Utterly unacceptable in 2016.
So yes the rumours are true and quite far reaching.

As the Game season comes to an end there are some great simulated days starting to be marketed - really has become a big business for the shooting schools/sporting agencies/Estates
I have been on a few over the last couple of "off seasons" and they have been great fun - game shoot like hospitality and a nice atmosphere with plenty of shooting (you can shoot a slab or more easily)
Just in the process of booking a couple through RBSS - anyone on here planing to do any simulated days?

Did a days simulated via here a few years back. Not a cheap day out by any stretch. I think we paid £300ish for the pleasure, and shot over 600 carts on the day.I have been on a few over the last couple of "off seasons" and they have been great fun - game shoot like hospitality and a nice atmosphere with plenty of shooting (you can shoot a slab or more easily)

That said, its fantastic fun.
It's all a question of against what you are comparing the cost
If it's to walking round a clay ground then it's plainly more expensive (though can occupy a full day and include elevenzies, drinks and a shoot lunch) but if it's compared to a game day at a similar level of Estate then it's very cost effective indeed
£250 to £350 plays £900 to £2k+ (obviously depending on cost per bird and bag size)
I've just signed up for one in March

I clearly haven't got the bug yet, as I've got a 200 quid 19-th hand 1973 Miroku 800 and two my dad handed down to me (which I never use). Does the job.
Depends on usage - if you're just doing the odd clay day or once or twice a season on game then one is all you're ever likely to have. For a regular shotgun shooter you could end up with fixed / multi / semi / tac / SS and so on depending on what you are in to. If you then throw stalking, vermin control or target shooting into the mix, and you end up with a firearm for every eventuality - you don't want to hit an elephant with a .22LR, but nor do you want to remove rabbit infestation with a .400 Rigby.quick question.
I've moved forces, the new fao is coming on Thursday to look at my safety. he said he would take my certificate away and send me a new one.
from what I've read on the tinterweb I should decline and ask for the new one as being in possession of the guns with no cert is against the law?
any ideas?

Have you changed address, installed a cabinet and put the shotgun in there?I've moved forces, the new fao is coming on Thursday to look at my safety. he said he would take my certificate away and send me a new one.

yup.
I told the right people, registered post and email.
he now wants to inspect (fair enough) but swap my lisence for one with the new force?
I would say you should hold onto the old one and wait for the new one to come in.I told the right people, registered post and email.

I ask because I am in the exact same boat as you. I emailed Police Scotland and awaiting someone getting in touch to come out and see my cabinet.

Always retain your FAC. You are stuffed without it. Give the FEO a copy.I've moved forces, the new fao is coming on Thursday to look at my safety. he said he would take my certificate away and send me a new one.
