Also interesting, thanks. All the info around just talks to the ease of the 10/22 so I never even considered alternatives!

Ease because there are a bazillion out there and a massive after-market modification scene. Plenty of other makes offer far greater accuracy however... but then others won't allow you to turn a little toy rifle into an AR-15 lookalike if that floats your boat.

Anschutz or CZ if you want something solid and accurate out of the box, the 10/22 will match them eventually but only when you've spent a fortune on tweaking and replacing bits. Trigger's 10/22 if you will. Plenty of others if you just want a cheap plinker.

It's more the modification scene that keeps them better known I think, marlin have made over twice as many model 60s as ruger has 10/22s! People with 10/22s are talking on the internet about how to improve them, people with marlins are out shooting instead hehe

I prefer bolt actions personally, the most accurate rimfires I've used have been savages and I still own a couple of them.

Hehe yes that's probably true, although Ruger are huge in the US which explains a lot. Agree on bolt action though, I keep meaning to add a semi to my cabinet purely for rapid bunnies but at the same time I know my CZ452 will remain far more accurate.

Any particular recommendations of a solid Ruger 10/22 setup for LSR / Gallery competition work?

I think I prefer that to prone (less faffing!) but the club rifles are not great with very stiff triggers.

Cheers in advance
Which specific matches would you like to shoot with your .22 rifle?

That will help determine which one is best for you wink

If you ask a dozen shooters which .22 is best, you may get a dozen different answers.

Exactly the route I went, Lanber Sporter Gold to a 525 last year.

Hesitated over the swap it as I got on with the Lanber but the Browning is so much nicer in every way I've had absolutley no regrets, it's a fantastic gun.

I gave mine a few passes with CCL conditioning oil and a layer of CCL wax last month, as the finish on new Brownings can be a bit underwhelming, and it looked even better than new. Gave me a good excuse to fondle it while not shooting too...

Anyone else modified their cabinet/safe to store shotguns barrels down ?

My safe came with the standard foam thingy to rest the guns but it's cut-outs were barrels shaped to store guns stock down

Didn't seem to be possible to get a replacement with the cut-out with a stock shape (perhaps I was looking in the wrong place) so took a Stanley knife to it and hey-presto- it now works brilliantly

Hiya probably just 25m and 50m precision currently. I wasn't great at standing unsupported (all within the black on a PL14 target at 20 metres) but it's the area I'd like to improve on the most as I can get a pretty respectable grouping from the off when bench-resting. Surbiton Postal really only do gallery at 20 metres but I'm going to drop the guys at Ham & Petersham Rifle Club a line when I'm through probation at Surbiton as they have 25m indoor and up to 100m outdoor ranges and are within an easy drive for me.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the rifle itself for the moment. All the leading brands already mentioned will deliver good enough accuracy out of the box for what you want to do. Spend some money on a good aftermarket trigger. Make sure the overall weight (including whatever sights you want to use) isn't too much for you. If you can keep it around 2.2-2.5Kg, that should be OK. Try a few different types of ammo, as you'll find some work better than others in your rifle. The most expensive Eley isn't necessarily going to be more accurate through your barrel than some reasonably priced SK. Don't worry too much if you can't get them all through one hole. You don't need to for most gallery rifle matches!

The way shooting works (like most sports involving equipment) is that you'll buy a gun when you start and then find a few months later you want to try another type of match, which requires a slightly different configuration so you'll then buy another one with another scope and more accessories and then you'll see someone else has modified theirs to do the job better, so you'll buy a different stock/trigger/barrel etc. and so it goes on and on and on... The reason something like a 10/22 is popular is that you can configure it for many different disciplines. There's a huge choice of replacement/add-on parts available for it, which means you can take the basic action and build a very specialised rifle if you need to.

If you want to do better at a match like 25/50m precision, you'll gain many more points by working on your stance, sight picture, trigger control, breathing etc. than you will by choosing one brand of rifle over another. A lot of this you can do at home, with 'dry fire' practice. There are some fancy electronic training aids available you might want to consider, as well.

Find a local dealer with a few different rifles in stock and go along and try standing unsupported with them in the shop so you can see how the size, fit and weight of them works with you. Gun fit is is essential when buying a shotgun, but it's amazing how few shooters think about it when buying a rifle. True, the design of many popular .22 rifles are similar, but manufacturers offer many different stock/barrel combinations which will change the overall 'feel' and balance of the gun, particularly if you're shooting unsupported.

Hopefully that'll give you a few things to think about. I can highly recommend Ham & Petersham. Shot there many times over the years and they're a really friendly, helpful bunch. I can also recommend a very good RFD near you, who can help with all sorts of gun-related stuff. PM me if you want his details.

Can anyone recommend a smith who can refinish a stock and forend. I prefer an oil finish so would like the varnish stripped from mine. Essex way preferably.

Filling out fac application form. Quick question regarding long barrelled pistol

It asks for action not type so do I just put .22 semi auto or do I need to put lbp semi auto.

Ithaca M37s. Top one 1962, lower one 1976 and my go to gun for pretty much everything now :-)
I've got the lower one. M37 Featherlight, bottom ejection, full choke. Had it for 33 years and my first ever purchase.
