I don't know if anyone can help.

I have a John Wilkes Precision tunnel sight on my target rifle and I need to fit a riser block. The trouble is I have absolutely no idea what the dovetail is.

The top of the dovetail is about 12.7mm and the bottom about 8.6mm and the height is about 3.6mm, the angle of the dovetail is 60 degrees.

It may be an Anschutz style but I'm guessing.

I will have had my shotgun license for four years in August of this year. Due to work commitments I have just not had the time to purchase a shotgun; I have used a few demo guns at the local clay shooting ground.

I obviously have a gun cabinet fitted but I have moved out of the house where fitted. I cannot install the gun cabinet where I am living at the moment. Would I still be able to purchase a shotgun and store at a local clay shooting ground ? Would I have to notify the Police that I no longer have a securely fixed gun cabinet ? What happens when my license is up for renewal, would the Police put some form of endorsement on my license, if the gun cabinet at the time is not securely fitted somewhere ?

As I understand it, if you own a shotgun, and as long as it is stored securely, and transported in line with the rules, you can keep it wherever you wish.
If you are the registered keeper, not necessarily the owner, the place of storage is stated on the SGC. It may be kept at a different location only for up to 72 hours. Placing it with a RFD for repair is an exception to this.

Thanks for the replies.

The clay shooting ground has a shop and is an RFD, so I guess will be fine to register it with them.

Got my new Air Arms 410 Carbine to play with until I take the step of purchasing the shotgun.

Got a GSG AK - before it goes back to the dealer, anyone else had an issue with it not cycling the last round? I.e. It holds the bolt open, but the last round is still in the mag??

So, could be close to 6 months for you, compared to 6 weeks for me.

Shocking really.

I'm really not looking forward to life outside the Met area at some point in the future.

Of course there's the other 007 that preferred a nice Webley over the PPK shoot

I'm after some advice from the shooting gods that frequent this forum. I have been sporting clay shooting more frequently up at Headley, I took the view that it was about time that I sorted out a licence and a gun, to this end I need advice please.

Yep you all guessed it, its a what gun or rather a which is likely to be better or any other recommendations. I appreciate the everyone is different and will have what suits them, it maybe that I don't "like" either.

I have a budget of around £350-£400 and in that range I have been looking at either Lanber or Baikal 12 gauge shotguns. has anyone come across these, thoughts etc? most of the reviews I have seen for the Lanbers have been ok but there doesn't seem to be a lot of information on the Baikals.

any advice, assistance, recommendations or alternatives are full welcome.

The only advice when buying a gun is to go somewhere and try it out. Only then will you be able to see if it's 'right' for you: fit, weight, barrel length etc.

This. Sadly price is immaterial. You can pay thousands for an off the shelf gun that doesn't fit and you won't hit st with it. Alternatively you could pick up a £50 S/S at auction that fits you perfectly and you won't miss....

Go to an RFD with a decent stock of shotguns, and pick up and mount as many as you can until you get a feel for the differences. Nothing at all wrong with the "cheaper" brands, be they Spanish, Turkish or Eastern European, it's all just brand bragging rights and silliness. It simply doesn't matter how much you spend on a gun or what brand is emblazoned on the case: if it doesn't fit, it's not worth it.

Go try, go get a feel for the differences, take some advice from the (hopefully) helpful RFD, and then make a choice and flex your budget around it. I set myself a budget of and found across three shops there were three guns that fitted me and mounted well - one was 20% of the budget, one 60% and the last one 400% of the budget. I settled for 60% and have been very happy with both the money saved and a gun that fits me about as well as can be without a professional fitting.... which will probably be the next step.

Does anyone has any experience with NV? I'm tempted by getting a Photon XT for use on a centerfire rifle in place of a more traditional lamp.

With the Game Fair coming up it seems and ideal opportunity to spend some money!

Photon is great for rimfire and air rifle
I dont think it upto centrefire use - its not able to 'see' at extreme distances and I am not talking about shooting a fox at say 120 yards - its what behind that counts and its really hard even with a good IR to scan to see if the shot is safe. Take a look at the latest ATN x sight or the drone pro - both mush better or the Pulsar 750 or the like.

Having my 26 year weirauch HW77K fettled at steve popes v-mach outfit as it's getting a bit twangy.

It's has very little use over the last couple of decades or so but I've got back into my paper punching, actually find it quite relaxing!!

I have a query re .22 pellets, there seems to be diameters varying from 5.51 to 5.53.

I am using H&N FTT @ 5.53 and am reasonably happy with them [sub 5p group @ 30 yds] but see that weirauch "own" branded pellets are 5.51-I have ordered some to trial them but has anyone views on this subject, apparently it can be quite a serious topic!!

Weapon is <12 ftlb. I now have to transfer this onto my SC here in Scotland but if I wish to purchase a n other I would now have to apply for FC [and all the fun and games that goes with it] and sub up 72 quid!!

English air rifle shooters might want to keep an eye on this...

cheers

Spot on. When I went to find my first 'decent' shotgun I went to a clay ground that had a shop attached - they let me try a few before deciding which one was best for me. Even got a bit of coaching free, too.
