I've recently heard that TVP firearms licensing is subcontracted out to that dodgy & waste-of-space organisation that is G4S.....!
Which may well explain the issue there rolleyes

Wouldn't surprise me - they keep reducing the numbers of officers, or more accurately I believe, they keep leaving.

Gents,
I need to buy shotgun insurance, which is best?
CPSA, BASC or independent?

I don't do competitions or field shooting, I generally just break a few clays once every couple of months, however a lot of places are now insisting on insurance....

Can anyone recommend a good insurer which doesn't cost the earth?

Gun Plan looks the cheapest currently at £22.50

Get it done, start the journey.
If you're competitive its addictive.

I'm looking to buy a new .223/5.56 in the New Year. My choices at the moment are a Steyr AUG or K&M M17S as I love the bull pup design. Anyone have any experience or know of any for sale in the UK (unlikely the K&M as they are too new).

Does anyone have any experience of importing a rifle from the US as I would have to import the M17S.

Thanks.

First port of call is to find a seller in US with ability to export, many don't IIRC.
I was looking at trying to import an already slicked up, tricked up cowboy action-ised underlever.....all the gunsmiths that do that in the USA wouldn't/couldn't export.

It's now too difficult and expensive to be worth it unless you are a serious collector or are in the trade. There are quite a few s/h AUGs around in the UK and a few M17Ss. They pop up for sale every now and then.

M17S are available here for around £700, have you shot a UK spec AUG ? an AR15 might end up on your shopping list instead.

Having shot an AR15 in America over the summer I must say it was extremely impressive. Even a total noob like me didn't miss a single shot using the scope and some guidance from an instructor. Not as much recoil as I'd have thought either.

Did you try 'easy mode' - aka Red Dot Sight? My shot grouping went from a couple of inches in diameter to roughly 50p sized.
Just a normal black crosshair telecsopic scope, from what I remember. The targets varied from about 50 to 200 yards away up a mountain, so the scope was necessary!

1) Where? I can't find one for sale anywhere at the moment. Edited to add a Bushy has just come up on Gun Trader, requesting details.
2) Not yet, I know the trigger can be a but mushy, which is why the K&M M17S with a 3lb match trigger as standard appeals.
3) No it won't, I have an accurate target rifle, I'm looking for something "fun" and I love the bull pup design.

Sooo anyway being me and impulsive I bought a No.4 mk1 for 180 quid. Why so cheap? Well everything appears to be in good shape metal wise but the previous owner has turned it into some sort of target rifle and chopped the front bits of wood off. Shaved some bits to mount sites I presume and screwed on a wooden comb. Bore seems very good. ( not that I could tell or know anything ) action and bolt numbers match

Anyway it had the rear sight missing which I've managed to scource for just over £30 full new wood set for 90 and a front band for £10 or so I'm in it for £310 or so what's the worst that can happen smile

Question is this new unissued wood. Do I treat with blo/ tung oil and wax it before I fit it?

Yes it's not going to be origional but I thought I'd rather have a cheap one I don't mind damaging and using rather than an expensive one I dare not shoot. Also my budget of around 500 every time I found a place that had some nice looking ones when I rang they were sold so bird in the hand etc etc of course now I've just looked again there are loads out there obviously. But none near by.

Do you want to bed it?

If so, I'd be tempted to leave the wood as is, until bedded, then linseed oil it once bedded.

Is it an original unmolested Mk1 that hasn't been FTR'd to Mk1/2 later spec etc.?

It says from memory I'll take some pics later No.4 mk1* long branch 1945 on it

Not sure what bedding is with these as I understand it with mor modern rifles that's making the action fit tight in the stiock using glass fibre and polymers or something?

I won't be competing with it but if it helps it and isn't hard I suppose why not.

All No4s will have been through base repair or FTR at some time. Components replaced under those circumstances should be considered Kosher. It's when the rifle hits the civilian market and dealers are not particular about the source of replacement components that causes the anomalies.

There are several styles of backsights, the best are early Singers with a smaller aperture that is good for target shooting.

Use a brown hard wax like Liberon. Just keep waxing and polishing. I recommend the rifle is waxed and then put away, then polished when taken out prior to use.

Correct.

It's worth doing (or getting a good Lee Enfield gunsmith to do for you) especially now you are fitting full replacement wood furniture to it.
