The PH Gun Cabinet - Shooting Matters

Well, the first think to ask is does your club have access to full bore facilities, either is your club range certified for full bore gallery and does it shoot/have access to other outdoor ranges such as Bisley etc.
If no is the answer to those questions you will have to join a club etc that does, as you won't be able to justify adding full bore to the FAC application.
You can't just add say a 7.62, in the off-chance of getting into something. That's not how it works I'm afraid.
If your range is indoor, and is certified for pistol calibre full bore such as 357/44/45 etc, then an underlever in any of those calibres is fine.
.357/.38SPL is definately the cheaper option if you buy ammo. If you want to fit optics (and I really don't understand why on earth people feel the need to do that for shooting at 25m distances - but there we go) then you really need to be looking for a Marlin as they are the things that are best suited to fitting a mount for optics)
You can fit them to a Henry as well, but, Henry's don't have a side loading gate which puts people off. It is possible to fit mounts to a Rossi, but not so easy as a Marlin. Which is why Marlins are so popular, but all the Marlins I've shot have been horrible things to use, and I have no idea why people like them.
It's not the calibre that defines what you can fit optics to, its the type of action. For example, Uberti make a copy of the 1873 Winchester, with a toggle action and top ejection, so, you can't fit scope mounts to a 1873 type action, that why you need something with a 1892 or 1894 type action.

All seems sound apart the numbers at the end. My Rossi 92 is top eject and I belive that a copy if a Winchester 1892
I a agree about Henry I don't like that there is no side load gate but every Henry I've shot has been smooth as butter and the most accurate.
One guy has a marlin in long colt and it's fabulous but it's a very old one made before they were taken over
You can mount scopes to top eject lever actions but way down the barrel so you need a scoope with a long eye relief

Went to the shop and tried the hw90 (gas ram). It was damn heavy! Tried the hw95k, and despite it only being 700g heavier or so, it felt loads lighter. That, and I became unconvinced of the merits of the ram. Tried the hw97 as well, but that was the weight of the 90. Pretty chuffed with purchase, got the gun plus a hawke 3-9x50 scope and .22 500 fieldline superdomes for 400, which is favorable with other prices.
I found my 95 quite hold sensitive, AIUI because it's lighter the spring affects the way it moves more. I've now got an AA S410k which is much more accurate but a bit dull (unless you're using it on a row of ice cubes, gallery style )This maybe a daft question... but do you wear your watch when shooting?
I'm reluctant to wear an automatic watch when clay shooting as I feel the repeated recoil will cause something to break, jam or jump out of place.
I've read a few times about people dropping a Rolex/Omega etc on the floor and the watch stopping and needing put right via repair. Don't know much about the workings of a watch but it seems that some sharp knocks will dislodge springs or something.
This naturally wouldn't be a problem if I still had my G-Shocks, but I sold that collection a few years ago and moved on
Perhaps I'm worrying about absolutely nothing?

I regularly wear automatic watches for shooting (JLC, Breitling, etc.). I bought a Steinhart, partly because I wanted black (i shoot in August in shirtsleeves), partly for waterproofing, and partly because I was worried about the damage it might do to my more expensive watches. None has ever missed a beat though.

Venue was Newbarn farm - the pheasant shoot won an award a couple of years back - Purdeys best small shoot or something - the location is stunning and decent birds can be be presented. It's about £160 a gun.
