Hypothetical question...if you woke up to find an intruder in your house (in the UK), would you go to your gun safe?
Always wondered how the law would deal with that. A semi auto does guarantee you and your family safety whilst a chair leg/table lamp/ancient Egyptian carving doesn't.

Seems silly that the law that allows you to have one strictly forbids using it to protect yourself. Maybe you can club them with it.

Does it? Reasonable force is reasonable force, shooting them as they flee isn't.

My gun safe is secured in a room close to the master bedroom, in fact it's less than 20ft from my bed. I could get a gun and be outside or at the other end of the house in less than a minute from the dog barking to warn of intruders.

However, if I went to confront an intruder then decided I needed a weapon I'd need to go back to my bedroom (past my kids rooms by the way) and through another 2 doors to get to them, which isn't exactly feasible. So, is it prudent to get the gun first?

Hopefully the sight of an armed homeowner would be enough to scare off a burgler...

Lefty, are you 'expecting' anyone? wink

I forgot to mention my fork-wielding attack dogs, I have dozens of the things hiding around the house. Not to mention the Ninjas in the ensuite bathroom...

+1

I think deliberately going to a gun cabinet and retrieving a shotgun would NOT go down well in court.

Plus I have stuff much closer to hand under my bed like one of those 6 x D cell Maglites.

Aren't you supposed to be hiding in my ensuite bathroom?

No, I'd use the machete I keep in my bedside drawer smile

I'm thinking that one shot in the air will be enough to scare them off. If I got a good view I might manage to nick them in the arse with the very edge of the pattern. wink

You are not looking at the practicalities, you don't want to have to re-plaster your ceiling! wink

That will never happen and if the public knew that FAC holders can easily purchase .22 semi auto versions of the US M4 AR rifle as well as single fire .223 AR and AK type rifles, they'd be banned as well.

The general public think, as I did once, that the only legally held weapons in the UK are shotguns and single fire hunting and target rifles.

Pretty new to shooting and still trying to get time to join a club but that is my 2p worth.

Actually I've found that a lot of 'non-shooters' forgot pistols had been banned and think they're kept at clubs for us to shoot.

They probably think this because of the number of crimes committed with handguns.

It's unlikely we'll see firearm bans reversed but it doesn't hurt to keep the discussion going. If we do nothing, they'll ban the lot in time.

It will never happen if we don't at least try to do something about it, Have you signed it yet? It only takes 2 minutes and costs you nothing.

Exactly, it seems strange that Northern Ireland it is legal to have both center fire and rim fire hand guns, but in Great Britain we cannot!

Unless of course you have a section 5 license, but they do not get given out to just anyone!

I'm re-fitting my pistol & ammo safe tomorrow. Dates back to when I owned a CZ75, a model 66 S & W & a PPK.

Lost those after the last knee jerk. When we moved in September, found a dusty old box of 9mm federal hydraohock which I hurriedly disposed of!!! They were squished under some egg box foam.

Safe now used for valuables only.

The law is funny isn't it? I really fancy a VEPR 12 for no other reason than I want one. Now that *would* get funny looks at the local clay ground!
I have got a friend that does just that with his VEPR, I have also shot clays in the past when I used to own a Saiga 12, always gets funny looks.
