IMHO I dont think they've mind their minds up yet. I'd guess Root opening against Essex is to see how he goes with Cook. If Root does well, then maybe Compton will be dropped and Bairstow brought in, but TBH Jonny doesn't inspire me with much confidence at Test level yet either. Having 2 Priors in the middle order might a bit extravagant, especially when neither Swann or Broad like to hang around. Personally, if Compton performs (75 n/o atm), Id keep him opening for the first 2 Tests at least, but move Root above Bell in the order.
They have 100% made their minds up about Root. Geoff Miller said they've decided Root is the best man to open with Cook, injury aside Root will be opening. djstevec said:

It's about selecting your best six batsmen, Compton is seventh I would say. If Bairstow struggles it will be interesting to see what they do, I have a sneaking suspicion Bopara might get another go.
I wouldn't say Bairstow is a better batsman yet, but depends where the selectors see a "hole" for a better batsman. Is Compton better than Bairstow at opening? Yes. Is Bairstow better at lower order hitting? Yes. I just dont think Bairstow has proved he can do it regularly enough yet which is why I'd rather see Root down there to hold things together a little more as we don't have a lower order batsman than can just stick around to allow Prior/Broad/Swann to hit it around.djstevec said:

It's great that the counties accomodate things like this, imagine that in football or rugby.

Siddle is higher ranked than Jimmy A in the world rankings, fk knows how! Siddle shouldn't play in current form. If starc/pattinson/bird/Harris are the seamers I think we are as easily as good as your attack. Swann v Lyon is in poms favour but Lyon will surprise people. Batting needs to be sorted but Lehman is already cutting through the sh@t and sorting this out. Over 10 tests I think this will be way closer than people think. Injuries could be the key.

Well, if they pick this guy I will have no team to support.
What a joke. IF Pakistan were barred from playing international cricket in the same way that SA were all those years ago, I could almost understand it. This is just not how country v country sport should be played.

What's so "undignified" about it? Half the English team is South African!!!! Lol. English have to be the biggest hypocrits going round
It is undignified because this is international, rather than club, cricket. What next? Qatar or the UAE become the no 1 ranked test nation when they offer ££££££ to the world's best players to become 'citizens'?
What would be the point if, say, the Aussie side sign a couple of Asian spinners, one or two tall, quick West Indians and a couple of South Africans? itis no more far fetched than England playing 2 or 3 foreigners and is totally against the spirit of country v country sport.
That is why I am not keen on it.

I think you missed some earlier context, this is a well worn argument round these parts. Perhaps it is the last minute nature of the scramble by the Aussie to fast track his passport, and this to get him into a team that only last week was described as THE WORLD'S BEST ... by their coach.
Was that this coach, or the last coach? It is SO hard to keep up.
Anyway, the undignified scramble has taken place, and lo a slightly fat, 31 year old spinner, who couldn't make the team at home, is now a part of the worlds best bowling attack, [clarkson]. In the World [\clarkson]
