40+ years ago when I was a nipper and me and a mate were the callow youths who would occasionally get a game with the first team if we were playing someone at the bottom of the league (and bat 10 and 11) I secured a draw by somehow thwarting the opposing fast bowler for an over or two at the end of the innings. Cheered off I was. I am sure on the day I wasn't quite sure why, as we hadn't scored more runs batting second and I was sure we had lost.

That was the losing/winning draw scenario.

Since moving from that area and playing in other leagues when I was older (more decent village stuff ie but not as good a standard) - I'v never again played that format - it was always win or lose (or very, very rarely, if ever, tie).

Edit: meant to say, congrats on the 50, busa!
Only just found this thread. I used to be a scorer for a Norfolk junior club team, and on a few occasions had to play because someone didn't turn up. I'm a complete non-player, haven't got a clue. They always used to put me in at No10 using the logic that if we had to play for a draw, it was better to have someone at No11 who knew how to play a straight bat, rather than me. Anything but me. I think the logic is sound.

Well, this season is best forgotten.

Both first and second XI are looking doomed to relegation in the Kent League.

We got knocked out of the NVKO in the area final.

Most worrying of all is the constant battle to put sides out, we conceded a 2s League game when we could only raise 6 players. First time in the history of the club that has happened and the 20 point deduction will almost certainly relegate us.

I've had a frustrating season with the bat, several 30s and 40s but keep failing trying to push on after getting set. A couple of injuries hasn't helped either, I currently have a foot problem keeping me out so today, I'm umpiring.

Hey ho.

Similar problems here Hammer.

The weather hasn't helped either.

Since I finally found out how to use my bat, I haven't had a game , 4 weeks now !

2 matches abandoned half way due to rain when we were all over both teams , , both are 1 and 2 in the league so it will likely mean we wont get promoted .

Last 2 weeks have seen one team concede due to lack of players and todays team have withdrawn from the league , again, lack of players.

Every mid week league game for a month has been cancelled due to weather.

Wife is happy though frown

Talking of odd-shaped boundaries, my lot used to play a team in Gt Yarmouth who used a municipal park - the matches were played on a rectangular field with low privet hedges as the boundary. One match we played, our No.1 ran 5 off the first ball - he had played it down to the furthest corner of the rectangle and the fielders couldn't be a*sed to run after it until they realised someone had to.

All a bit like "The art of coarse cricket".

Talking of weird shaped outfields and boundaries, I once played at a place where on one side the outfield was relatively flat but then ran away downhill incredibly, once the ball was off the square plus about 10 yards on that side, it just ran down the hill for four every time, even a little nudge would do it.

This is why even though they had a 'square' they only really played on one or two wickets on the far side from the downslope - and these were really worn as you can imagine.

We found out from the other team that this downslope was one side of a bomb crater created during WWII.

Had a game yesterday where we hammered the opposition, bowled them out for 112, then knocked them off quickly, I opened and was 60 not out !

Finally worked out how my bat works biggrin

This leads us into our last game on Saturday where we need to win with a max 35 points which will move us to top and we win the division, by an incredibly close 0.02 points !

Good work bud.

Our season goes to the wire for both XIs. Last game this Sat.

Both are second bottom (2 go down), both play the teams in 3rd who can get promoted with a win. If we win good chance of survival.

Personally I'm yo-yoing between the sides depending on who's available. Not particularly helpful.

Played in a 2s win a fortnight ago, got 37 and took 4 wkts so last week got upped to open for the 1s, got another dubious lbw for 8 and as I don't bowl in the 1s, twiddled my thumbs in the field for 50 overs. Good game though, a tie, 186 each.

Huge day for the club on Sat.

Good luck Hammer,

We are in 2nd and are playing the team in 3rd, luckily we have a good turn out this week with a very strong team, stomach is rumbling already, which is a good sign for me.

What a game , talk about nerves getting the better of us.
Won the toss and elected to field, we dropped their opening bat , a ringer from their 1's , 6 , yes 6 times !
He finally went for 76.

We restricted them to 150, then eventually got them in the dark with 3 balls to go and 8 down . So close.

Finished top of the league by 0.13 points !

Never felt so physically sick watching game , after opening and getting out for 1, lbw.

Sounds great - was the LBW dodgy or were you actually out?

Looked like it was going down leg from here...

Top work BM. Well played. We fared somewhat less well. Both XIs lost, both relegated. Gutted.

In for another season.

First match last Saturday was abandoned at 36 overs due to rain.

Having had a good winters netting, I felt I had finally mastered this batting stuff.

I net with the 1's and all of them had put me in their fantasy team, only for me to nick off for a duck in the first over, -20 points biggrin

Next week smile

Well, where do I start with this tale of utter woe?

Mass player exodus for various reasons. All winter nets cancelled.
Unable to field 2 sides, Kent League agreed to us playing just the 2s fixtures. Had they not done so we would have folded.

Beast from the East wrecked the clubhouse, burst pipes in roof flooded the place, ceilings down, everything fubared. Currently a building site.

Finances non existent and will struggle to recover only playing 9 home games all season.

Struggling even to put out one team. Lost game 1, second rained off. Knocked out of the NVKO with 9 men at first stage.

Sad and depressing.

That's bad news Hammer, given the success you had last year its surprising to lose players this year.

At least you will be sure of selection each week wink

Mid season update.

Clubhouse now repaired with a £40k insurance claim.

After 10 games we`re 4th in the table and going along nicely, won 4 out of the last 5 games.

Personally I`m back to being an all rounder. Lack of bowlers mean I've already bowled more overs this season than in any of the last 10.
Currently second in the division ratings with 16 wickets.
I've dropped down from opening to number 5 most games and have done OKish, one 60 and a 46no.

At the AGM back in March I got the job of Bar Manager.
So far this season we've taken more over the bar showing World Cup football than during cricket matches. The 2 England games at weekends we've had half the village at the club with 4 figure takings.
Will be opening up later for the first semi and expecting a huge turnout tomorrow for England v Croatia. If we win that then Sunday will be massive.
This has done us a right favour financially, hard work from the wrong side of the bar, but good fun.

The player took it very well, but it's not good sportsmanship
