Game 6, defeat 5. Nightmare ~ Thursday I had 6 players, some serious barrel scraping produced 11 by Saturday, start time Sunday 9 turned up. 4 batsmen and 4 bowlers, one part time keeper.

Lost toss and got put in ~ which suited us as I`d have batted anyway. Somehow we got to 162 all out for a batting point but they just smashed their way past that in less than 25 overs for 4 down.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother. grumpy

The pleasure of being clubbed for 2 fours and the getting him caught and bowled the next ball!

We lost, but the difference one player can make! Their opener took 7 overs to get his 50. Retired. But the rest of the game was evenly balanced. Even got some runs only to be caught flaying at the last over.

Cracking game yesterday with all the things that can make village cricket so enjoyable. A picturesque setting, decent weather and two evenly matched teams with a good mix of youth and experience playing the game in the right spirit ended in us making 249 in 40 overs and them chasing it down with a ball to spare. A good tea and everyone adjourning to the village pub afterwards made the afternoon complete.

Even being given LBW to a ball that would've missed another set didn't spoil my day...

^ Interesting story. I don't remember that over or even his name, but felt for him watching that even now. I was at the YB40 final yesterday and Glamorgan's opening bowler delivered a Harmison-esque wide on the first ball of the match - he settled down after that, but as the story shows, one tiny mental doubt can affect the performance massively.

As I kid I used to run-up and bowl without thinking about it too much and barely ever bowled wides. When I was about 20, bowling as I usually did, I just lost the ability to let go of the ball properly. Big wides, double bounces, beamers - the lot. All in one over. No idea what happened. I pretty much gave up bowling at that point, and though I've bowled a few times since in friendly matches and wasn't too bad, I think about that over every time.

I didn't bowl a single ball this season.

I sometimes think I'll have *one more season* - but it's a decade since I last played week in, week out and I just haven't got the time anymore to commit to it every weekend - plus I'm a stone or two heavier (which shows in the field - don't want to be one of those put in the slips as a matter of course!)

My lad's works team are sometimes a player or two short - I played once for them last year - and blow me, the bloke who was missing was the 'keeper - and I used to keep years ago - which my lad told them ... so I was chucked the gloves. Luckily ony a 20-over evening match. Never again - couldn't move the next morning ... only ONE bye though (which I was delighted at)!

Maybe I should just have fond memories!

To all those going to some nets, enjoy it!

The only good thing to say about our first Sunday game was that it was warm and sunny.

Beaten badly despite a good start.

Opposition batted first , and the only difference between the 2 teams was one young player of theirs , who got himself out on 157 ! Great eye for the ball and incredible timing. Last seasons young player of the year in Berkshire.

My bowling ........... 2 wides to start the season , followed by seeing the batsmans middle stump disturbed. Only got 2 overs , but hey, my strike rate is good , just don't count the runs biggrin

Pity you couldn't have uprooted the young lad's middle peg!

I remember once some 20 years ago, we were playing our local rivals who had a lad who they said was going to have a trial for Leicestershire. He already played for Lincs - he was about 17 I think ... anyway, he started off slow and we thought - well, he ain't all that - but having sussed the pitch and a few overs of our bowling he then proceeded to despatch the ball to all parts, including a glorious flick of his legs that sailed over the large trees at deep square leg ... I can see the ball now still going up as it went over the boundary ...

At our level then when you met someone who was a few notches above the first thing you found out was that they hit the ball harder and further than you ever thought possible. And they always seem to have all day to play the ball, even agsinst what we considered a quick bowler, always in position with the feet, in a fraction of a second. Makes it so much easier to play any shot when the feet move well ...

I forget what he got in the end - 130 or something, and we did get him out, run out, in the last few overs trying to get the strike ...

We did play against him a few years after that - we were relegated the year we first played them - and he always scored scored bucketfuls against us. He was a nice guy as well. Knew how good he was but not in te least bit arrogant.

Not sure of the details but he did get a trial I think at Leics but nothing came of it.

Such is life.

I remember him playing for Lincs against Hants or something in a KO Cup - would it have been the Natwest Trophy or something when the minor counties got to play the big boys in the first round? I hoped he's do well, he was run out for 0 without facing a ball.

I felt for him, really.

Edit: It wasn't Hants, it was Derbyshire.

Game finished today under a bad storm of thunder and lightning.

Good, close game , took 2 wickets from 3 overs for 10 runs , now there is some old tosser on top of the bowling figures biggrin

Wickets and strike rate. smile

Have to love village cricket , their best bat walked when their umpire gave him not out , caught behind to a snick , one of mine.

Great sportsmanship East Garston cc

Second game for gerrards Cross Sunday XI. limited 40 over match

Last week was my first game for 15 years, and whilst i certainly did not disgrace myself in the field, i was out 2nd ball LBW.

I could barely walk for the next 3 days such is my level of (un)fitness.

Thought i had recovered until yesterday's match. We batted first, i went in at 6, survived 1st 3 balls, taking a bye on the 3rd. As soon as i started runnung, my legs' quads seized up and i was reduced to paiful jogging for the rest of the match.

Out 4th ball, played on again for 0. Still a 100% inprovement on last week.

Net practice and some stretching and jogging during the week are required.

At least you were back out there smile

I complained yesterday that I didn't want to umpire just about the whole of our innings as usual , although i do enjoy it, then get called in when I am next in to bat.
Solution , ok , number 2 smile
Faced 2 wides then out lbw.

Well, now I can play Saturdays I'm back playing Kent League.

Rolled back the years on Saturday, went in at 30 for 4 chasing 238, batted 42 overs for 87 not out and steered us to 180 for 8 for the draw.

Sunday in the Village scored 29 out of 153 for 9. Bowled em out for 127.

Decent weekend.

Haha! That sounds like village cricket!

I never made 100 - 87 being my top score and never bowled one over in any match apart from a beer match when I got carted for approaching 28 or something ...

Good going there Hammer - nothing like batting on a nice clear sumnmer's day - first of course if possible - make the buggers fied in the sun I say.

We threw our skipper in the shower once before the game when he came in having won the toss and instead of patting his legs as you do on the walk back to the pavilion he started putting his fingers down the seam behind an imaginary ball ... it was about 28 degrees. "I saw something in the pitch," he said ... yeah, right.

Thanks chaps. LONG time since I spent that long at the crease. Pressure was off at 30 for 4, just set myself to stay there and bat. I've learned over the years to play to my strengths - square and back cuts, off drives and the occasional pull. I can't play on drives for love nor money so don't bother trying. As long as I stick to that and concentrate properly it works reasonably well.

It's gonna have to as it's becoming clear that at 47 my legs simply can't hack it as a military medium bowler any more and as I can't bowl spin, I've gone from all rounder to just a bat.

Still love the game and will only retire when I'm forced to. And when that happens I'll umpire.

Good effort for playing Saturday and Sunday too. I can't do that these days.

Your scoring ares are the same as mine - never been able to hit a decent an on-drive! 3 wins in 3 league outings for my rabble so far this season. Made my highest score for about 5 years yesterday. Aching like I do most Mondays.

Great to go down on a sunny Saturday and drink the afternoon away!
