Sagan was hugely unlucky this year but he doesn't benefit from a lead out in the same that Cav, Kittel et al do, Sagan has to jump around from wheel to wheel in the last 500m or so and to finish in the top five so often this year was pretty remarkable really. Again though, he won the green jersey by getting into breaks, winning the intermediates and then being there at the sharp end for the final sprints. Kittel et al don't feature in those breaks for the intermediates and are reliant on the finish.
Didn't the points awarded for the green jersey change in the last few years?
I can't remember exactly, was it more points available for intermediate sprints or something like that?
I also think perhaps wrongly that the green jersey is the lease coveted one? there is a lot more kudos for the KOM for example..
The likes of the big sprinters also tend to hanker after stage wins more - they don't seem to bothered about gaining intermediate points etc..

Wiggo of to Tinkoff for â?¬4 million a year! (allegedly)
What's he going to do there? He was talking about concentrating on the track and bulking up a bit for Rio the other day and just doing some training rides for SKY.

Ultimate 'up yours' to Chris and Dave if he helps Contador win next year's TDF?
Wiggo's head is all over the place at times, however the image of him dressed in yellow and blue on a windy northern French stage in the Tour, smashing the echelon to pieces, with the stick insect desperately trying to scrabble for wheels, would be worth a laugh.I think if Brad sets his mind to it he can be a very destructive force to SKY in next years TDF. Personally I thought not picking him for the Tour was a real smack in the face as Brailsford basically said he did not trust him.I hope he does move because this years Tour was boring having 4 or 5 going for GC would make for a better Tour.
I guess it depends what sort of route TdF '15 is, going on this years route though, I'd expect a few more HC climbs next year and possibly two TT stages so its not a bad shout from Tinkoff to be hunting around Wiggo if he is as unsettled as it appears.
There seems to be some rumours from the usual sources about the route already, generally these are well founded and it looks like it will be anti-clockwise in '15 obviously starting in Utrecht then going across the top through Normandy, down through Bordeaux, over the Pyrannes with the second rest day in Nice and then over the Alps with rumours of a TT somewhere in the third week around Le Bourg-d'Oisans, which just happens to be at the foot of Alpe d'Huez...
