Smith to open for Aus, despite NEVER having played there. Interesting to see how that works out

Funny that he has never played a first class game as an opener. I dont know the stats but I would think most No 3/4s have at least one opened before.

His career as an opener didn't get off to a good start. Out first ball in the BBL.

Indeed, it will be an interesting experiment.

He has amazing powers of concentration but his homespun technique will almost certainly be found out.

Not watching the short ball is a major sin for an upper order batsman an every team has a bowler or two to exploit this.

I hope I am proven wrong but don't have a good feeling about the longer-term outcome

Agreed. He likes to walk across his stumps. Any new ball seam movement is going to be a problem. Bowlers need to pitch it up and make sure LBW is in play.

I'm calling the Smudge opener experiment a failure and Cam Green is also not doing all that well

Windies are rattling through the order. Smudge gone for 6, Buschange 3, Green 8, and Head for a golden.

Lovely

Nothing like disrupting the batting order to get a specialist gully fielder in

Kudos to cricket.com.au . Every angle and all the different commentators on the ball that won it for WI.

The mood here amoung people I've spoken to is "well done WI".
Fairytale tour for S Joseph, great recovery from the 1st test loss.

Absolutely. Cricket needs a strong WI side. They are great to watch and there is such a fantastic cricket heritage there. Test cricket is all the better for them being a team to be reckoned with.

Anybody play regularly and bowl pace? I'm getting back in to it this year. Found a club I like and signed up. Winter nets start in a few weeks.

I used to bowl pace (swing) and keen to get a spot on the team. What do people do for training beyond weekly nets? I'm running and weight lifting, both for this and general health. Adding some sprints into my runs.

I need practice with the ball though. Should I just go to my local park with some stumps and bag of balls and measure out a wicket and start bowling some balls? Will I look like a tt?

I emailed some schools with indoor nets but they will only hire to a club with their own insurance.

I did have a coaching session which was good and was supposed to have a double session before Xmas but was ill and had a bad back. The next few sessions they are doing are kids only so it will be May before I can go there again.

Whereabouts in the country are you? My son plays for a local club, they started winter training and nets about five weeks ago. We're in Hampshire, there are good facilities at Dummer Cricket Centre, just outside of the Peoples' Republic of Basingstoke near Junction 7 of the M3. You can hire a net with a bowling machine (or you can bowl by yourself) for around £30 per hour, or have professional coaching for £65 per hour. Probably a better use of time than trying to work out for yourself why you keep bunging it down leg-side*

Any "proper" club should know if there's a similar facility where you are.

*If you're bowling right-handed, you're trying too hard, and falling away to the left. HTH.

Im in MK, unfortunately the facilities round these parts are pretty dismal. Most clubs use the council grounds and have no nets, no sight screens, barely a scoreboard.

There was a place nearby that was doing coaching and I messaged them but had no reply and their social media hasnt been updated in a while. As I say I had some coaching with a group that hired the hall at a local school during the half terms, but their next couple of sessions are kids camps

Your doing far more than most club bowlers already!!

best way ime is do what you said a load of balls a stump or 3, but taking a friend helps, both to properly measure the run up which is crucial, and to observe where you are landing. Once you have done that the first time probably can do it on your own.

Dont you have any parks or rec's with public nets in them? there are still some about.

This is pissing me off more and more. Whenever there is a stumping call the square leg umpire refers to the TV umpire. That's your job, it's all you have to do is watch for stumpings.

Look at this one from the WPL

You needed help with that? Where the hell were you looking. Batter is a quarter of the way down the track with their bat in the air.

Had my first session bowling in the nets. First time bowling properly for about 25 years. Was ok. Few duff balls. Feel like I'm coming over too hard and some balls were far too short. I've got too much going on in my mind running in and it's muddling me. Managed a few good balls and clattered middle stump against one batter.

Found a place that rents nets. Doesn't have the biggest run up but think it will be useful to start with the get the basic mechanics right and relax a bit.
