Shot 89 this morning, pretty pleased with the tweaks I've made to my swing.

Me and my uncle are through to the final of our winter league after winning this morning. Best part of it is we are playing my Dad and my other uncle in the final so it's a family affair biggrin

Hit it nicely and was a couple under through 12 when we won 2 n 1.

My first comp yesterday. Monthly medal.
Shot 83 so one over with handicap.
Played well but came off thinking I had let a few simple shots slip by.
There is always next week.

Terrible terrible game today. Shot 115 frown Hate being a beginner. I was using my new driver on virtually every tee though. Hit 2 lovely straight ones but sliced every single other.
Going to have a lesson on using that next.
Oddly though I hit my hybrid 3 really well today which normally I don't.

Also hit my longest ever ball. 269 yards (fully carry) was helped with a huge tailwind though smile

Which bring me nicely on to my next question. Does anyone use those golf distance watches? My friend had a Garmin S1 today, looked a really nice bit of kit and seemed useful.

I've used skycaddy's (similar to the watch - GPS) and bushnells over the past few years....far prefer the latter - allows you to get more accurate yardages, no subscription fees and allows you to measure other random stuff too!

Does need a steady hand though...you may not mind but I wouldn't like swinging with a chunky watch on though

Played again yesterday morning. Probably a bad idea as it was my Dad's 60th party the night before, so I was slightly hungover and I had only 3.5 hours sleep!

However, managed to shoot 94. This did however include 4 triple bogeys and a quadruple bogey 9 hehe

Still managed 32 points playing off 18, even with those 5 blobs.

Also notched up 6 pars, 4 bogies and finished it off nicely on the 18th with a birdie.

I have the skycaddie watch. It is helpful. Club selection is easier.
It also gives you front, middle and back of green distances. You then know your leeway. Especially if there is trouble you particularly want to avoid one end of the green.
Also very helpful if you play unfamiliar course.
If you play just one course generally it is far less valuable.

If you're shooting 115 or even 100+ the last thing you need to improve your game is a distance watch (yes yes yes I know they're sexy and exciting), save that outlay and take some lessons, you'll be so glad you did.

I agree - if you're shooting 115 then you're probably not hitting clubs consistent distances anyway.

Much better spent on a few lessons.

A beginner shooting 115 yet you can drive 269 yards? How the heck does that work, you must have some technique down well. I can't see brute force and ignorance alone getting that sort of distance.

Have you had any lessons at all yet?

I've had 5 lessons so far. As I said with that drive it was a total one off. Had a huge wind behind me, it was one of only 2 shots I hit straight with my new driver that day, every other one I sliced, badly.
Thursday mornings lesson is going to be just with my driver.
Lost so many shots because I tried to use it as much as I could instead of giving up and using my normal 3 wood instead.
Last week I had my best round of 97 the course was a par 69 so if I'm right that means I played to 28 that day?

269 with a huge tailwind for a beginner is really nothing special.

Agree - that's yards as well so only 245 metres, I was a regular 260+ metre driver and sometimes 300 with wind and a dry course when I was going round in 100+.

Now that I play off of 14 I drive far less distance - not quite the same fun though............

So would I frown

Why is the driver so hard to hit straight?

Now I'm even more confused, 269 yds for a beginner is nothing?? Really!

Depends on your definition of beginner I guess.

I though the average amateur hit in the range of 200-260 yds. To hit more than that for a beginner I'd say was pretty good?

I'd take the distance people claim to hit with a pinch of salt...I'm a solid 14 handicapper and am regularly the longest hitter out of the groups i play in because i understand how to hit the driver with an up swing & slight draw...For reference i hit my pitch around 135/140 yards and my 7 iron around 170 yards....having said that...i usually hit with Driver, around 260 yards with roll, maybe 270 if i hit a perfect shot...i think my longest drive was just short of 300 yards but that was downhill with a breeze behind on a warm day with pretty dry fairways..

As most 'better' players would say...it's not about how far you hit the ball, it's all about hitting fairways & decent approach shots, that's how you improve & lower your handicap!
