I know I'm a beginner but I'm not completely stupid. Obviously if it's close enough and playable with a putter then that's what I do. That's not the situation I was describing in my OP.
Matt it all boils down to practice, learn a couple of go to shots from around the green and practice for all your life is worth... you have to drill your body with practice to learn the short game feel that you will rely on as your game progresses. At this stage you may not be able to hit fabulous full shots consistently but there is no reason that you cannot build a solid short game which you can confidently rely upon in times of trouble. It's not rocket science, it's hard work and patience.

I originally thought the chap was talking about chip shots in and around the green....rather than 50 yard shots...that's what i struggled with most when i first started out - hence the ball in the back of the stance, give the club some forward shaft lean which will keep the hands in front of the ball and should help him to stop thinning his shots
When chipping....strangely i find it easier to leave loft ON the club when i lean the shaft forward, use the bounce and keep the club face nice and open...I've never understood why people chip with a closed stance...
If I am "the chap" then yes, I was talking about whacking the ball through the green when positioned a few feet off the green. But the discussion about chipping in general has been interesting to read. When chipping....strangely i find it easier to leave loft ON the club when i lean the shaft forward, use the bounce and keep the club face nice and open...I've never understood why people chip with a closed stance...
To throw something else in to the mix, I've watched a video of someone using a hybrid to get the ball on to the green instead of a wedge.
7 iron - Putting stroke ftw
9/10 your worst putt will be as good or better than your best chip!
You'll be surprised how often I have to remind myself of that though - the urge to take a wedge is always strong for me.

You're not wrong Rosscow, until recently I carried 5 wedges for every round, occasionally 6.I'm down to 4 now and learning that, through manipulation of the face angle, 3 is probably enough - addictive little things.......

5 wedges… wow, what lofts?I'm down to 4 now and learning that, through manipulation of the face angle, 3 is probably enough - addictive little things.......
I play 4 wedges, PW, GW, SW & LW. I could drop the LW for another club at the other end but I'd rather lay up and trust my wedges to score.
I wouldn't really want to call it manipulation of the face angle (its not very consistent too), your wedges have to be natural and fluid, getting mechanical thoughts with a wedge in hand is never good. I would try the clock face drill and griping down to alter the distance of your wedges.
I carry PW (46), 52, SW (54) and 58. Irrespective of that, i'd rather have a bit more imagination and use standard clubs in different ways to achieve what you can do with specific clubs...
However, whilst my imagination is great, my ability is less so
Whilst i'm jumping into a thread, a couple of things.
1) I had to cancel a round at Longhirst The Lakes course in Morpeth last weekend - what did i miss?
2) I'm playing the Prince Bishops course at Ramside in Durham on Sunday morning. Anyone else played there?
3) Back to the reality of the situation - i've been practising an awful lot recently following a couple of really poor rounds. I've pretty much got from 6 iron to wedge sorted out - in as much as i've got them going straight and a reasonably consistent distance - but above that, i'm struggling with the old favourite. Yup, slices of varying degrees.
I've been trying a few things but the one that is working at the minute (he says hopefully) is to break the wrists at the start of the backswing on my woods / hybrids and longer irons (5 and up).
In essences i've got 2 swings but i'm trying to avoid the whole cupping wrist thing in order to get a bit straighter club face at impact.
So, am i working around a bigger issue or is there anything wrong with what i'm doing?
I suspect i know the answer to this...

I too would be up for a PH golf day.
I have just started playing again. Threw my clubs away 3 years ago. They were about 20 years old and I only ever played a few times a year.
Had 3 lessons and have played 4 rounds a a local par 69 course. Best score so far a 102. Gave me a stableford score of 30 playing off an assumed 28 handicap. Have hit a couple of birdies and a few pars but have a fair few disaster holes each round.
Biggest revelation for me is how much technology has moved on, not only in the clubs but in the training aids available. Had a lesson on a golf simulator and really enjoyed seeing what was happening to the club at impact and how it affected the flight of the ball. I could then understand and with guidance from the pro modify my swing. I have also joined rotary swing for 3 months and am finding their videos very helpful.
I am currently using my father in laws old set of Taylor made burner irons. They seem to get a fair bit of distance compared to my old clubs. 6 iron is about 200 yards with a good straight hit (judged from being pin high on a 200 yard par 3, although about 20 yards right) I don't think I ever hit that far with my old 3 iron from the old set.
All in all I am really enjoying playing again and taking it a bit more seriously. I would like to get a proper registered handicap as I have never played seriously enough to get one. First target for handicap is 20. The golf pro I am using reckons I will be able to get to 12, but 1 step at a time and main thing is getting out there and playing.

I'm off at 7.30 tomorrow at Brean, 3rd time I'll have played this year and I'll be playing a guy who hasn't been out for 5 months. Get the feeling he's going to destroy me!
No idea what the course will be like, I'm guessing flat, windy and foggy. Still, it's £15, and nowhere else local was available at short notice!

Hope you have better luck with your early start than I'm having at the moment. I'm playing a nine hole par 3 in the mornings and the random green conditions is a bit frustrating. Some putts play normally, others hit pockets of moisture and stop dead. It's a bit frustrating but a good learning experience I guess. No idea what the course will be like, I'm guessing flat, windy and foggy. Best round ever today 82 with 42 Pts off 16 with 8 GIR. Everything off the tee long and straight, woods off the deck again long and straight. Even though I had 8 failed goes at a birdie they were all 2 or better.
I have been frustrated recently that I am capable of better golf but have struggled to keep consistency through the round. It all came together this morning.

Are there subtitles available on the red button? 82 strokes gross, so I hit the ball 82 times,
42 points stableford, 1 pt for bogey, 2 pts for par, 3 for birdie etc
1 play off a handicap of 16 so for the most difficult 16 holes i get an extra stroke so in srableford par 4 done in 4 strokes could earn me 3 pts if it is one ofl the 16 most difficult
GIR is Greens in Regulation, if you play properly you should be on the green with 2 putts to geta par, what it meant today for me was I did not get a single birdie despite having 8 chances, ahandfull were really close [subtitle mode OFF]
I played in the finals of the Club Championship on Sunday - it was my least enjoyable golf ever, I was so full of nerves and painkillers for a bad back that, in front of 40 members, I hit my first tee shot 6 feet.
It was a baking hot day, 36 holes and against an excruciatingly devious opponent. He wouldn't talk to me the whole way round and did his usual tricks of belching in the tee box, murmuring little things to put me off and standing too close whenever he could.
I played horribly tensed up golf and couldn't wait for it to end, it took 32 holes to win, he gave me the limpest handshake possible, said something narky to my caddie and walked off of the course.
Lovely day out........
