Footjoy AQL (Aqualites?) have been very successful for me. Completely waterproof so far over 2 years.

yep so by spiked i mean they have 'cleats' on the bottom, similar to the ones you've linked above. Will give you much better traction in slippery conditions!

Well after doing some reading I got a pair of those SealSkinz waterproof socks yesterday. Must say, the quality of them is top notch.

Shouldn't matter too much what I wear on my feet now just as long as they grip.

I've not got the socks but have the gloves for mountain biking in winter. They are brilliant, if they are anything to go off you won't have a issue with the socks at all

Well, I managed to lose the knock-out cup final on Saturday frown

Lost 32 points to 35. Played very well apart from 4 holes (silly blobs). Anything within 80 yards I was deadly. Including the final hole - 180 yard par 3 and I was pin high but 10 yards to the right of the green. Very little green to work with (pin cut tight to the right hand side) and the green was 6' above the ball but managed to chip in for birdie! That levelled the score but unfortunately the other guy holed a 30 foot putt for par!

A good day though, enjoyable golf smile

Call me a golflamic fundamentalist, but I reckon Stableford is for corporate golf days with chaps who play every 2 years (without fail) only.

Competitions should be strokeplay or matchplay.

Stableford is a shortcut around one of the hardest things about a round of golf - not losing your head.

In a strokeplay tournament lose your head in a big way on a single hole, and you aren't going to win. Stableford you can play with gay abandon, have three 12s and still be in with a shot.

That's what I like about it smile

I see your point though. Once I'm good enough I'll probably feel the same.

The best thing about Stableford, as long as people actually do it, is speeding up the game by picking up the ball the moment you can't score a point.

The WORST thing about Stableford is the fusty, OCD, completer-finisher, pains-in-the-backside who take 60 seconds pacing out and eyeballing an 8' putt for an 11 in a Stableford competition 'for the sake of the card'.

(all chance of scoring having disappeared 380 yards ago back on the tee when they put two in the pond)

Aaaaargh! The card is bloody meaningless. If you'd picked up after the second plop we could all have moved on with our lives.

What satisfaction are you going to get from knowing you went round in 132, over and above knowing it was 'about 130'???

And is that satisfaction going to make up for the extra 45 minutes the round is going to take? For 'the sake of the card'? AAARGH.

Slow play is a curse.

There, I've vented.

(This isn't about bad golf - it's about holding everyone up whilst striving for an apparently different 0 points to the 0 points you'll get if you just pick it up)

Couldn't agree more. Slow play is an absolute nightmare...the last round i played was in a two ball...it took over 5 hours. On a course that can be done in 3 hours if the course is empty. The worst part about slow play is the guys that hit a duff shot on every single hole...or off every single tee box...if you're learning the game, stick to the par 3 courses until you can at least get the ball off the ground.

The time before that...again as a 2 ball, we were stuck behind a 4 ball...the guys teed off while we were paying...a good 20 minutes before we went off... we'd caught the 4 ball up by the time we got to the 2nd tee and heard pretty clearly...'nah i'm not letting them play through, they can wait the "insert choice expletive here"' one of the guys he was with shook his head, the others laughed....no need for that in any sport let alone a game that's supposed to be played by 'gentlemen'

I played yesterday on my own (yes, I know...) and strolled up to the empty first - nobody in sight.

By the 6th I'd been waved through by 5 different 4-balls. All of whom were very polite (as I hope they thought I was) and took literally 3 minutes out of their 5-hour rounds to volunteer to let me play through. As a result of their generosity I managed 16 holes in 150 minutes, on a busy 'resort' course.

It wouldn't have happened if I was in a 2-ball. For some reason, no matter how fast you catch them up, 2-balls are much less likely to get the nod.

Perhaps it's because they regard a solo golfer as a dangerous lunatic who you don't want to tangle with. There may be something in that.

I played 9 holes on my own on Saturday, on a pretty grotty local course.

Only saw two other players.

It started so well as well, chipped in from just off the green on the first for a birdie...... bearing in mind i'd be lucky to be awarded a 28 handicap I was over the moon and disheartened in equal measures. Delighted that i'd done it, devastated that no-one saw it.

However it quickly went down hill and a 6 on a par three and a 10 (ten) on the par five (including a lost ball) quickly ruined my mood.

Officially down to 4.6 after saturdays round. 1 qualifier left of the season to try and get a handicap of 4 for winter.

I quite enjoy being a solo golfer. It's a much more relaxed atmosphere with zero pressure and zero reason to rush. (I'm happy to let people play through but it's rare that a group will catch up). I joined a couple of guys recently as I arrived on the first tee just after they had played. I instally regretted it as they got in my head and I felt every shot was rushed and I didn't have time to think through my shots.
I'm still very much learning the basics at the minute so I like to take time over each shot and playing the smart shots to try and reduce my score.

Slow play is the absolute scourge of golf here.

First Men's Open of the season last weekend, 3 balls, in carts (which arguably slows down play imo), took us 3 hours to play the first 9 holes, 90% of the field are single figure handicappers.

Drives me fkING mad.

That's insanely bad!

Do you think it is the new wave of players, having watched the PGA Tour most of their lives?

Not exactly great role models for slow play - Furyk et al frown

At my club, you can only play 2 balls or foursomes. Slow play is definitely not accepted.

Even in competitions we normally get the round completed in 3.5 hours.

Don't these courses have marshals? 6 hours for nine holes is a joke.
