Agreed!

My second shots have improved greatly over the last few weeks - and I'm now shooting in the 80's again with the occasional birdie!

Morning Golfers....

Question for the experienced golfers amongst you.

I've been playing for probably 8 years or so, but nothing serious. Maybe once a month over the summer and once or twice on a nice day in the winter.

I've always played with an inherited set of clubs - my deceased uncle. He was a pretty good player, low single digits when he gave up the clubs.

However the clubs are quite an old set of blades. - Think minimum 15 years now.

I struggle with consistency using them, am I likely to find a little more consistency if I was to spend a little cash on a more "amateur", beginner, forgiving set of clubs?

OR do I just persevere and admit i'm not that good and need lots more practice? (Had a session of lessons about 4 years ago - probably do need a few more)

If the answer is spend some money what should I be looking for?

Thanks

Simple answer, if you struggle getting the ball in the air & struggle to hit consistent distances then go a try a bunch of cavity back clubs or 'Game improvers'. They won't sound or feel nearly as nice as a decent set of blades when you strike the ball in the sweet spot...but off centre hits will still get airborne and you'll find they'll still go almost the same distance. Golfbidder.co.uk is a great site for used clubs & you'd probably get a decent set of G15's for not much money. They are among one of the most forgiving clubs out there!

Definitely go to a local retailer and try as many different options you can before deciding.

Or spend the same amount of money on lessons rather than clubs...your golf will improve but only if you commit time to practicing what you've been taught!

Hope that helps.

Golf bidder is fantastic..

G15s will be about £220, I bought G2s 5-PW for £90 and they are wonderful clubs!

Look into game improvement irons, although not as nice as a purely struck blade they should help you get the ball up in the air and the off centre hits should be reduced!

As your handicap comes down maybe you could het the blades back out smile

I have a nice callaway 5 wood I'm interested in selling.. If your interested drop me a message!!

Echo the 2 above comments but look at the Ping G10's for a good halfway house...

Also consider fit, if you're over 6'1/under 5'7 or so (or have gorillia/T-rex arms) making sure the clubs are the right length and degree of lie is even more important (won't have as much of an affect if within the band though) - in addition to grip sizes...

As they will not fit all they're often a little cheaper but no more expensive to order new!

I went for g2s as I'm a student and I felt they offered me the best value. Mine were rated '6,6,6' and are in very good condition and still perform fantastically.

I have used golf bidder 4 times for woods, hybrids wedges and irons and there service is excellent and they represent excellent vfm!! A rating of 'fair' usually means good on any other site!

Cheers gents, i'm a pretty normal size so no worries on that front.

Happy to go pre-owned also.

Would probably need new woods too as my current ones, although nice at the time are also from the ark.

Going down the club for a quick 18 holes tonight, get my last card in for my handicap.

Then I'll go home and watch the Masters with a cold beer! Life is sweet! smile

I did that last night, left work early got down to the club.

Then played so horrendously it completely ruined my enjoyment of watching the Par 3 comp laugh

You know what? Same happened for me!

I think the rush to get down there, then to have to play with an idiot who had never met = horrendous front nine.

Pulled it together for the back nine, thankfully!

The Masters:

Bill Haas 4 under, Adam Scott and others 1 back.

Fairways are like greens, greens are like putting down the bonnet of your car.

So, who's your money on then?

Yay a new golf thread!

Thought the old one had gone quiet smile

My Masters bets aren't looking so hot, Rose/Poulter and Els frown.

Played Yesterday, 87 with 40 putts! Not bad ball striking though and had a 80yard wedge shot back up to a foot for me, which made me feel awesome hehe.

Anyone looking for an absolute bargain in the golf ball world needs to check these bad boys out:

3 piece Urethane cover ball for £12 a dozen online. I've been playing them for the last year now and they play great, made in the same factory as Srixon, and believed to be an earlier Z model wink.

I switched to them after playing Wilson DX3 and getting killed by our super fast slick (excellent) greens.

I like a bargain me hehe

trying to get to the elusive single digit h'cap this year, going to be tough but you have to aim high (or is that low?) and see how close you can get!

I can only play once a week due to injuries, I obsess over golf like you wouldn't believe though ha ha!

Hey Duncan, I'm a bit obsessive, too!

I actually think I've over-golfed this month. I've played 3 rounds in 6 days, and it'll be 4 rounds in a week come tomorrow.

The first 2 rounds were pretty good - 89 and 94 (in wet and windy conditions). but last night I fell to pieces and couldn't hit a ball on the front 9. Rescued it a bit on the back nine (44) but still shot 100.

I think it was the rush from work - just wasn't relaxed enough.

As for the balls, I'll keep an eye out for some of those. I'm normally a Callaway man when it comes to balls but I won a dozen Titleist DT Solo's a few months ago so have been playing them and they seem pretty good.

I'm just waiting to get my official handicap but I'd like to think I could get to 13/14 by the end of the summer. Single figures next year maybe!!!!

Hey Ross,

Those balls are only available online, I'd try a box for £12 and see what you think. IMO they play like a £30doz ball wink.

The obsession thing is a nice escapism from life for me smile. I'm well aware that I don't play enough, but position work in the mirror, and swinging at home has kept me shooting in the 80's for the last 5 years or so.

Golfwrx is an interesting site/forum. You need to completely ignore the mental distances quoted though. One guy complaining cos his swing speed was 120ish but he wasn't 'long enough' hehe.

You end up recognising the bull S'ers. Good interesting debate on there regarding technique.

As opposed to buying a new set of irons and the a driver as well, would I be as well picking up one of the "package deals" that American golf do?

Something like this:

Played 9 holes after work today, didn't play too great to be honest. From the first tee I felt tired and the concentration wasn't there.

I don't think I'll be going again straight after a hard shift at work.
