Right I've got a 5 club competition on saturday morning. Only a 15 holer too so, as the driver is probably my weekest club at the moment i'm thinking of this;

Rescue / Hybrid thing (good for 200 yards or so)
7 iron (good for 150 - 160)
Wedge
U Wedge (or 56 degree)
Putter

Any thoughts on this?
Hmmm.....

Think I would go with:

20 degree hybrid (like you say, good for 200 yards+)
6 iron (around 165 yards)
9 iron (around 135 yards)
55 degree (around 90 yards, chips and bunkers)
Putter

Played yesterday, skipped the par 5 17th and finished the 18th in the dark!

28 points from 17 holes but with 5 blobs.

I seem to be going back to being either good (5 birdie putts, only 1 converted) or bad. Not much in the middle!!

That 'really good or really bad' thing isn't helped by playing Stableford. It promotes a cavalier attitude to shot selection knowing the worst that can happen is a blob.

Strokeplay will help your consistency because when you HAVE to put EVERY ball in the cup, you become a bit more protective of it.
Yep, I completely agree. Although the 5 blobs were finished off (e.g. 6 for nowt instead of a point).

Stableford has folk take driver on every tee, going straight at every pin and taking on every lake, bunker and ditch. A lot of the texture of the game (patience, risk-reward, head vs ego) is lost.
I struggle with this a little. We play Stableford in our group every weekend. My strategy is to get the lowest score I can. Unless we have presure from behind we usually finish the ball off into the cup and record the number of strokes. It is always a question of fighting the demons who play with your head regarding risk/reward especially when you have a good start to the round and your confidence starts to over ride your safety common sense. It does not change my view when I play stroke play, I do not even adjust my thinking based on if I get a stroke on a hole. The only time I really change my playing strategy is when playing in a team where your partner plays a good safe shot so you can turn up the screws to see if you can get a bit more with no risk.
Stupid question but what am I missing?
Nothing, I agree with you.
Playing for your lowest stableford score is a different strategy to playing for your lowest strokeplay score.

Stableford simplifies the game by basically completely removing the sting of a terrible hole.

Terrible holes are part and parcel of the game, and playing in a manner that considers and attempts to avoid them is an important part of getting round, IMO.

I don't think in a non-matchplay situation that I should be able to beat you in spite of hitting the ball more times than you did.

Taking a 10 on the 2nd is reckless and should inflict real damage to your card, not a glancing flesh-wound.
If a guy who plays off a mid handicap can play 17 good holes and score 36 points or more, then surely he should be congratulated and not chastised because hole #11 was a quadruple bogey.

This might be the first time in PH history that two differently opinioned groups have both respected each others views and had a constructive and interesting debate.
No it isn't. You plonker.

I need replacements for my woods. I upgraded to Mizuno MP-52 irons this year with the DG S300 shafts (as recommended my coach) and it made a big difference to my game. The woods I am currently using (John Daly Hippo 1, 3 and 5) I bought for about £40 from eBay about 15 years ago, they are whippier than Calamity Jane and I don't feel I can swing with any speed without them disappearing up into the ether and generally a bit left too.

They look like this:

My current plan is to get fitted at American Golf but from what I currently understand I hit down too much with my woods so I might try and get that sorted with a few lessons first. The Ping G25 stuff is on my radar at the moment.

The other thing I might do is just by a second hand stiff shafted 10ish degree G25 and see how I get on with it.
I've had remarkable results with my G25 woods (not so much the driver, but I'm working on that).

The hybrid and 3 wood have been exceptional.

Ordered some Galvin Green winter trolley mitts today (as a Christmas present for someone to give to me!).

Also ordered a pair of FJ cold weather gloves and also one of the FJ super dooper wet weather gloves.

Nothing will stop me playing golf this year!!

Getting chilly in the morning now!

31 points yesterday, quite pleased with that considering we were waiting around for an hour on the 1st tee!

He was great, and will always go down as one of the greats.

Unfortunately I agree that injuries and age won't let him reach those heights again.

It's a shame as once I would have liked to see him overtake Jack Nicklaus. Now however, with all of his personal problems coming to light I have to say it's probably a good thing that he won't.

More worrying than his swing or his length seems to be his putting - once so good but now just poor.

Came 4th in the Christmas Cup yesterday. Played pretty well considering the wind - 32 points.

However, it was again a case of what could have been, as I had 5 blobs on the card frown

Good fun though.

We don't have any winter tees or winter greens.

We are lucky to have a piece of land that drains freakishly well - got to love links golf!

They look lovely! Are they light?

Did you watch the vid? It kills me ha ha hehe
Yep, they are pretty light. The traction you get is incredible - so much grip. Very comfortable.

I love the cleat right under the big toe.

Yeah the video is funny!

Had our society AGM today, followed by 18 holes.

Won the day with 30 points off 16, tough conditions and a pretty bad course in wet and horrible muddy conditions.

Still, won £30!

About ten years ago my mate in our regular Sunday four brought his eight year old daughter along and she played instead of him off 36.
This year she won the European order of merit aged 18 .
Awesome. smile
Great story!

Well done Charley Hull.
