Played Bransford in Worcestershire yesterday. First time I've played this year and in 4 months.

To say I was horrendous would be being kind.

Shot 111 which put me around 40 over. Lost 12 balls, my iron shots were truly horrific. Was topping and slicing every shot.
Tee shots weren't much better. Although I was getting height and distance, was still slicing every shot.

Putting was ok considering, but pitching & chipping was poor.

I'm booking a lesson today.

Hate this game at the moment.

Perfect day for golf yesterday, and it fell on our society day. This society has been running 10 years now, so handicaps are pretty accurate, and all regular golfers.

Take a look at the scores - http://www.letournoi.co.uk/?page_id=1686

A really good course, and very cheap, but so tight. A real test for a golfer. Highly recommend Rusper golf club for those in the South East.
21 points Fats - poor effort!! hehe

Haven't played Rusper before, will try and get on there.

Oh dear frown

No matter, have a few lessons and you'll improve!

It was my first game in 4 months last week and I only managed to shoot 99.

Onwards and upwards!

Hello,

May be a long shot but just wondering if anyone has a used Driver they would be willing to sell, don't need anything fancy just something to get me started.

Thanks

Drivers are quite person specific in terms of swing speed, launch angle etc.

How far do you hit a 7 iron, do you normally git the ball high/low, standard shot shape - left/right/straight?

What shaft flex and material are your're irons?

I can't remember where you're based but anywhere towards New Malden and the Golfbidder head office is there (second hand clubs). They even let you borrow them to take to the driving range around the corner.

It gets worse. I had 7 points on holes 16 and 17! Could have been a lot worse!

Weird thing was I duffed a few chips, and putting was poor, but it wasn't like I was shanking, or pulling everything. I actually hit the ball ok. I should have parred first three and walked off with bogies(I play off 17) and then did not get another bogie until hole 14. First par at 16, and first birdie at 17. Everything was worse than bogie other than those 6 holes....

Is the only time I can remember walking off a course when I have had such a poor score, and it was not due to weather, being injured/hungover and/or playing like an idiot. I really had to ask myself "what just happened there"? It is a tough course as seen by the other scores - but it was a good course - I would recommend, and I would go back and play again.

had the most two frustrating rounds I've had in recent memory. barely broke 100 both times...lack of practice and not concentrating on every shot really let me down! Especially as I've broken 80 twice since the start of the year! Must get back to the range!!

Played today and shot a personal best 88! Very happy with the score but there is still 3 or 4 easy shots i could loose by managing the way around the course better!

Got bored sat at home alone today, so went out and played The Hill course at Barnham Broom just outside Norwich. It's the course I play regularly, but it was blowing hard today which made it difficult.

Tee shots with the dog were catching the wind and ballooning right with my natural fade when it was blowing left to right. I dumped a couple in the water on one hole and inexplicably lost a ball when it should have been easy to find. Irons were a bit of a lottery, but my approach play was generally ok. A few came up short with wedges when the wind caught them.

Managed a 97 which is only 3 off my PB, so I was relatively satisfied. 5 pars and a birdie helped. On a still day I think it would have been a few shots better.

One thing I did notice was the flex in the dog's shaft. I could feel it flexing as I swung. I've noticed on the range recently that I've been hitting the ball both ways, with no real clue as to why. I used to be a permanent fade.

I popped into American Golf after my round and demo'd a couple of clubs, and my swing speed had increased from around 85mph to mid to high 90s. When I hit a regular shafted club I was spraying it around left and right with draw and fade. I moved on to a stiff shafted Taylormade RBZ and immediately started hitting much straighter in a fairly narrow cone.

As a result I'm now looking for a new driver. I quite like the look of the R1 which can be had for around £160 at the moment. Any other recommendations for a 24 h'capper?

^^^ Your swing speed is stiff. Not too stiff though!

It actually depends upon which shaft, if it is OEM or a 'made for' shaft, weight etc.

If you aren't getting fully fitted for a driver, try EVERYTHING!(within your price range of course)

If one goes better, feels better, buy it. Take that one to the desk, not another one of the same kind.

Retief Goosen told a story about getting a driver as backup to his gamer, he went through over 200 head and shaft combinations to get something near to what he had. That's one type of head and one type of shaft!

Deals at AG at the moment...

I'd try these as well as the Taylormade offerings:
Callaway X Hot also the Pro if available.(Not the 2)
Callaway Optifit
Cobra AMP Cell but not the D version(draw)
Adams Super S (try it!)
Benross Speed - various versions. Cheap but they perform.

First club competition tomorrow and looking forward to it despite only having played 8 holes since Christmas.

Goal for this year is to get down to single figures (currently 13) and I should have done it last summer but never managed to play my best when it mattered.

Arrival of our first child in a week or so's time might scupper my plans somewhat though!

I only started playing golf last year, did 3 rounds and was pretty poor, hitting around 120 and coming comfortably last in a group of guys who have played for a while. I would hit a couple of good shots in a round, but the majority would all over the place with no consistency and many lost balls.

This year I'm going to try and sort this out, I've bought myself some Wilson Deep Red clubs and had 3 lessons so far, starting to build my swing and getting to the range a couple of times per week. The difference the lessons have made has been incredible. I'm obviously concentrating on technique rather than power so not hitting it far, but hitting straight with a decent trajectory is starting to happen more often. I play my first round in a couple of weeks, bit sooner than I would like but I am looking forward to see how that goes.

Thanks for that. I tried the benross. Couldn't get on with it. I've always liked the TM clubs whenever I've had a hit with them, so would guess I'll end up with one of those, but I definitely want to try a few others.

I'll have a look around and see if the ones you mention are in stock anywhere near me for a demo.

I'm playing again today. Eaton golf club in Norwich. First time round here. Should be interesting. At least it's not blowing a hoolie today.

I'd personally try to avoid Taylormade...their whole ethos annoys the heck out of me....they ran a twitter campaign recently - win a new driver by taking photos of their friends using 'old' equipment such as the originaly RBZ drivers...not really the right way to go about things IMO.

If every single golfer spent the same money on lessons as they did on new clubs then the average handicap would be a lot lower...that's not to say you shouldn't buy new clubs...but maybe think about investing in say £100 worth of lessons before buying £500 worth of clubs? What happens if you spend £500 on new clubs and hit the ball worse than you currently do?

Buying lessons better than clubs?
I have played golf since I was 14 (occasionally) - getting into regular golf when my knees finally could not take football anymore 10 years ago.

Since I have played I have owned the following sets of clubs (24 years).

  • A jumble sale mismatch
  • Wilson Staff
  • Tommy Armour
  • Callaway X21's
  • Taylormade Rocketbladze
In that time I have had 5 x drivers, 4 x 3 woods, and 4 x rescue woods, 6 x wedges, and 4 x putters.

I have also only ever had 2 lessons in my life. I am not a great golfer (play off of 17) - and I don't enjoy lessons particularly, or the driving range. I love being on the course with my mates though.

The point of this post is that I recently bought my Rocketbladze. Have really struggled with distance with irons, and consistency for probably 5 years. I have a rescue 6 that I have used for past 4 years as it was so bad! At Xmas I was on holiday in Morocco and escaped for a round of golf, and was lent an old set of Jack Nicklaus graphite clubs. I hit these better than I had my Callaways ever. So I decided to purchase the new clubs in graphite. It has transformed my game (apart from last week when I had a disaster!). I can hit an iron now. No lessons - nothing else has changed. So it can have an impact.

Not saying lessons are not good for you. However they are not good for me - I know what I need to do - but my body does not listen!

With regards to people wasting money on clubs I also agree. The Rocketbladze I bought have been superseded by the Powerbladze (I think!). However the Rocketbladze were only on the market for approx 12/18 months as the premium club from TM. I asked the guy in the shop (where I bought 2nd hand for a bargain) why they had released a new club.

Apparently the Rocketbladze were the best selling club in 2012. Then Mickelson won a major with the Callaway X-hot's, and they became the best seller. Rose then won his major with the Powerbladze, and so TaylorMade rushed the release to gain market share. I could not believe people buy clubs based upon what the pro's do! I knew it happened in the US - go into any golf shop and the Americans are all around the latest and (possibly) greatest - but apparently us Brits are just as guilty.

Played my first round since Sept 2012 today!

Missed the whole of '13 with a hip and knee problem. Hit a basket at the range last week and overall I was really pleased with how it went. Wasn't worried about scoring more thinking about connection and direction.

What was strange is that my body has forgotten how to slice it, and I now have an occasional hook! Just swinging slow and focussing on the line of the follow through and finish.

Playing off 18 I scored 25 points today. Total rubbish but were I just interested in the score I wouldn't take the time to think and feel.

And today makes the end of the Corporation of London rule that golfers must wear red when playing at a course in Epping Forest, in my case Chingford. A rule that has been in place 126 years!

I predict some new irons in my future!

I do have lessons, when I can fit them in.

As for Taylormade's marketing techniques...I couldn't really give two hoots. If one of their clubs happens to feel the best of the ones I try and it's in my price range, I'll buy it. I'm no brand we like some players, who you see with a bag full of matching head covers and irons.

I buy what feels good. I've got Wilson irons, a TM hybrid, a Ping putter and a Nicklaus driver, all carted around in a mizuno bag.

The results I saw on the machine at AG yesterday were very similar to what I see on the course. Fading most drives, but with the odd pull. As soon as I moved to the stiff shaft my swing speed apparently calls for, the shots were tightened up massively. No real slice or fade and a narrow spread down the middle. It convinced me, so I'll be buying something at some point this year.

But not before I've squeezed in the rest of the lessons I was bought for my birthday.

I think sometimes you just have a bad day!

I played with my new society on Saturday - came 4th with 38 points. Mind you, course was very short and my handicap generous (they have me playing off of 26 until I put 3 cards in, 1 more to go). Shot 86.

I'm also going to a local club that I've been on the waiting list since last year tonight to see the secretary, hopefully I'm in......

And I am in!! Really pleased, nice little club with very active competition side.

It's a cracking course (although very tough!) with the possibility of playing one of the best courses in the country several times a year.

Super cheap subs, unlimited golf.
