if anyones a member of their local club I would be interested to know how you make the cost of your membership worthwhile I work 6 days a week one day off during the week and every other sunday off are there any other perks that make £700+ a year good value
5 Day membership might suit you more?I work shifts so I am a 5 day member and play in the week.
Cost wise, £700 is less than £15 a week which works out pretty cheap if you try and play once a week. Even if you only get out 3 times a month you're winning.
Plus, there is something really nice about just walking up and grabbing a card and Playing, playing a quick 9 practice in the evening etc.
You also get to play in real comps, and there is usually lots going on at the club to get involved with.

As Duncan said if you're keen you can play every day that you have off + every summer evening with enough light, probably adds up to 150 days playing a year or £4.50 per round and nipping out for 6/9/12 holes is a lovely way to finish your day.
Competitions? Not really my thing but I play in 3 a week because comp golf beats no golf at all.
£700 a year seems a lot though - is that a fairly average membership price?

Cheddar £700 is cheap! Right at the bottom end for 7 day membership. As Duncan said if you're keen you can play every day that you have off + every summer evening with enough light, probably adds up to 150 days playing a year or £4.50 per round and nipping out for 6/9/12 holes is a lovely way to finish your day.

I pay £550 5 day on a nice course and consider myself lucky

Oh - I'm surprised Duncan, bit shocked at the "right at the bottom end for 7 day membership" - economies of scale and supply/demand I guess. I bet your facilities are in another league to here though.I pay £550 5 day on a nice course and consider myself lucky
This'll sound like the 'worst look how little my membership costs posts ever' but I pay £150 a year for 365 day membership + £2 for each tournament I enter.
The clubhouse only fully opens on Saturday (quite quiet here) but you can request the use of it mid-week to eat lunch etc for free or rent it exclusively for £50 a day - but we're not talking leather wing back chairs, multiple log fires, beautiful cocktail waitresses, swimming pools and gymnasiums here, salubrious it is not
For milner993 - try joining for a year, see who you meet, how you get on and how your game improves (it will) otherwise you'll always wonder what it would have been like - remember it's not £700, it's the difference between what you would have spent paying green fees and the membership costs + you'll nip out in the evening for a few holes that you otherwise wouldn't get to do.
And let us know how you go.

Great post Cheddar, oh my god is that cheap! How do they maintain a golf course with that income? This'll sound like the 'worst look how little my membership costs posts ever' but I pay £150 a year for 365 day membership + £2 for each tournament I enter.

Decent courses in England can charge £150 a round, and I'm not joking!
In fact, the silly famous course like Wentworth will be closer to £300 a round

I used to wonder myself how they do it, found it scary to be honest as I couldn't reconcile the maths.Decent courses in England can charge £150 a round, and I'm not joking!

But, incredibly we're in 'semi' rude health.
We only have around 50 members who are active weekly and about 130 altogether.
Annual income breaksdown like this:
Green fees £25,000
Membership £20,000
Bar profit £18,000
Sponsorship £20,000
Tournaments £10,000
Shop profit £7000
Misc £5000
Total annual income approx £100,000 - probably wouldn't run a high end club for a week!
Outgoings:
Greenkeepers (two, part time) £18,000
Machinery upkeep etc £5000
Prizes £4000
Elecy/bills/cleaner £10,000
Lease £10,000
Misc £5000
Total £62,000 (say £70k all up)
Balance, give or take: £30,000
Having only two paid staff keep outgoings low, all other work - garden care, coaching, painting, bar staff, captaincy, presidency, secretarial, treasury, committee etc is voluntary - we all (well some) muck in, I try to do two part time days a week on menial physical stuff, coaching beginners, and business advising.
I wonder what an average UK club brings in annually? Any idea?

However I agree with Duncan, £700 a year is very much at the lower end of golf membership costs.

Shocking weekend for me. Shot a 103 in the Saturday comp and came second to last with a nett 85. No idea what's happened to me. Think it's time for some lessons. I seem to be pushing all my irons. Perhaps I've opened the face again. I used to do that a few years ago.
Ouch, that doesn't sound too enjoyable. I've had a few of those rounds recently though.looking at the fees to join the club I like the most would pay its way as a mid week round is £28 so the offer that’s on for a 7 day membership at £795 reduced from £895 and a suspended joining fee is good value for money, the issue I have at the moment is I like to play various courses at the moment whilst I'm still at a high handicap (20) I think until my handicap drops to 10-15 I want to play in different situations hopefully making me a better player, I'm still having lessons and have seen a big change in my swing with better ball flight and lower scores so the £800 will go to game improvements as and when I need them.
Would be nice if Piston Heads could run a Golf day once a year nice cars, Golf and a good meal.
