Some advice please chaps. It's my birthday next week so I'm considering spoiling myself a GPS device. I have the Garmin G6 in mind (DG doing it for £170 I think). However, there are later models out (G7 & G8) but after looking at a couple of reviews I can't seem to find many differences to warrant the extra £120 & £200. Does anyone have any experience of these devices? Obviously I'd prefer the latest model but that will require more saving. Thanks.

All be it lessons would undoubtedly help me out more ha.
No experience of the Garmin, but I did used to have a SkyCaddie, which was pretty good and had loads of courses available - never use it any more however. I got an app on my phone call FreeCaddie (on Android, I presume similar is available for iOS), which seems just as accurate, and has no subscription costs whatsoever. I've used on my local course, one down in Deven, Lanzarote and California, and it never has an issue finding the course. Seems pretty accurate compared to a SkyCaddie too.

Thanks Bodhi. Yes I use the SwingBySwing app which is great (at times), logs my stats and scores etc. but it is also subscription based for all them extras which I definitely want to knock on the head. Unfortunately my phone doesn't quite refresh the GPS as often I would like and I'm lucky if a full charge can get me through the 18. So was just looking for something a bit more specific that does a good job. Will still give your app a crack in the mean time thanks.

No idea Gaz, it certainly wouldn't help it though.

If I was to spend £200 or so on something to give me range information, I think it would be an optical range finder.

Agree, I had gps apps before, but nothing beats a laser rangefinder imo.

My Friend has had great success with one he found on ebay for £50. Took a chance on a Chinese job and it's been spot on smile

For GPS, I'd stick to cheapo phone apps.

Cbull, are you a low handicap golfer? By low I mean under 10?

I wish ha. I don't really have a handicap but generally shoot between 100 and 110, anything under 100 is a good day (so it would be max handicap at a guess). If/when the GPS doesn't work on the phone I really struggle judging distances so it gives me allot more confidence with the shots I hit when I know exactly where the ball is to the pin with just a quick glance at the device.

Cheers Duncan. I've always thought the range finders are a little more for the pro's and I know they be costly also. At £50 it might be worth a punt, any idea which device your mate got? In the mean time I may stick to the apps, my phone contract is up in a few months so may be able to get a phone that can handle the software/GPS a little better.

What do we think about these new fangled golf shoes that just have a moulded rubber some rather than cleats?

Fancy a set as I'm very much a fair weather golfer and my cleated footjoys are a bit nackered now, do they offer decent enough grip? They sure as hell feel a lot more comfortable when wearing them in the shop!

Little bit late with my update but I played in the club captain's day competition last weekend, fist game for 7 weeks owing to holidays and decorating and after arriving late and having time only for some putts before I....

Went out in 24 points but came back in 16, playing off 8 to finish 4 over gross with 40 points (was under-par through the front 9!!!), ended up coming T3 but missed out on prizes on countback which was annoying, was all going well until I lost a ball on the 12th and lost full concentration, thinking about the score a bit too much I think!

Im yet to contribute anything to this thread, simply because ive had nothing to contribute but that changed today.....i shot under 100 (98 to be precise) for the first time ever.

I bought a set of Macgregor golf clubs about 7 years ago and since then i must have played on a full 18 hole course approx 6 times with the last time, prior to today, being in 2011!

During the summer months me and a few mates play, maybe, once a fortnight on the local 9 hole pitch and putt course, holes ranging from 100yrds - 164yrds. Recently on this course ive been producing rounds of between 29-32 quite consistently. Add to that visits to the driving range maybe once a month and the is the extent of my golfing.

So onto today. I struggle with consistency with my driver so i left that at home today. I decided to play 'sensible' golf and didnt try and pull off any ridiculous shots or go for anything i knew id struggle to achieve. This seemed to work a treat and found myself hitting the ball more fluidly and natural, more relaxed, and not forcing things.

I had one par on the first nine along with some shockers giving me 52 and four pars on the back nine, again with some shockers, giving me 46.

I enjoy golf hell of a lot but getting below 100 today has increased the want, and need, to play more golf! So much so rather than waiting another 3 years for my next round im heading out for another 18 holes this tuesday to hopefully better today's 98!

Was our club trophy yesterday, best nett over 36 holes wins. I'm off 18 after starting the game again recently. The guy who won had 7 birdies in a row on his first round! He deservedly won with 64 68.

I had 67 and 70 which put me third. My new driver (Adams XTD) is a beast, drove our 10th, 350 yards then holed the putt for the eagle! I must admit it was thanks to a great first bounce and a slight downhill slope, but still!

I do drive the ball well and started to putt a lot better recently, only had 3 three putts all day I think, just need to work on accuracy from 100 yards in and also getting up and down more often.

Nice one Tim, sounds like a good day at the office smile

Ashamed to say I walked off the course today after 7 holes.
Yet again my iron play ruining everything.
Slicing and topping still. 7 lessons, play once maybe twice a week sometimes, still don't feel like I'm improving.

I could be reading too much into it though today as yesterday I battered my chest and biceps at the gym.
Can hardly straighten my arms today.

Still feel extremely dejected.

Couldn't get on my father in laws course Sunday as there was a comp on, so we booked the Derby at the Belfry - only £45 for 2 inc. a buggy.

Course was pretty basic, but straight forward and enjoyable with rock hard fairways resulting in massive drives (hit a few >350), and very decent greens.

Pretty young blonde sat in a buggy on a par 3... £10 for the chance to win a discounted round on the PGA if you hit the green... 190 yards... father in law hit a 3 wood to 6 inches (we thought it was going in), I hit a 6 iron to 2 ft laugh

After my very welcomed 98 on Saturday i hit the course again today and hit............113!!!

My short game seemed fine (to me at my level anyway)apart from the odd st shot but my tee shots were, to put simply, embarrassing! Again, i left the driver at home but just could not connect decently.

I had two rounds on the 9 hole pitch and putt yesterday followed by 2 large baskets on the driving range so maybe i over did it slightly yesterday. Also after using TopFlite balls for as long as i can remember i used anything but today. Im unlikely to be at a level were ball selection would make a massive difference but maybe it was mentally, who knows.

Also when i realised i was on for an unsatisfactory round i started to experiment a bit with my club selection and shot choices which needless to say didnt help the score.

On a more positive note though ive got a more achievable score to beat on my next round and found out during the week a round is only £11!!! On wards and upwards!
