All this shaft talk makes me laugh. Yes they make a difference but just use what feels right for you.
Most people will be just fine with standard clubs and shafts unless you have a real slow like a lot of ladies or you swing like a crazed mad man on speed.
People would do a lot better if they worried more about how to play the game rather than walk about with the latest club / shaft etc
Every club has at least 1 bloke with all the latest gear and does 4 air shots each round = wker
True, I have played with a couple of very low guys playing with 20 year old blades. So new gear doesn't always mean you'll play better.. ..but as you said, why make the game harder than it needs to be?Most people will be just fine with standard clubs and shafts unless you have a real slow like a lot of ladies or you swing like a crazed mad man on speed.

I presume your not a low handicap ( just because most people arent sorry if im wrong )
Why would you want blades ? The game is hard enough as it is why not make things easier for yourself and smack some cavity backs
As mentioned previously on this thread, I am a bit of a freak when it comes to golf clubs. I used to struggle with cavities (think they were TaylorMade 300's) to get consistent distance - one 7 iron would go 150, another 160, the next 165 - whereas with the blades, I know a 7 iron is likely to go around 150. I also find the long irons much easier to hit with the blades. Wrong I know, but then I can't hit a rescue wood straight to save my life. As I said, a bit of a freak. Why would you want blades ? I also used to have an issue with not committing to the strike properly, especially with the shorter irons. The blades made sure that was no longer the case, as if you don't commit, they don't go.
I would count myself as a low handicapper though. When I got the blades I was playing off 8, got that down to 5 after a couple of year with them. Now crept back up to 7 due to lack of time to practice - still no issues getting a good contact out the blades, ignoring the occasional shank.

If you have been down to 5 then your obviously no hacker. Blades it is then thats fair enough at least you are of a standard where you will see a benifit from them. Most people wont simply down to not being a good enough player. I also used to have an issue with not committing to the strike properly, especially with the shorter irons. For the majority of people it doesn't make a great deal of difference as long as you have something you feel happy with. Edited by JamesNotJim on Friday 22 August 16:40
Spending the money on lessons and practice putting that into practice on the course will be far more effective at bringing scores down.

What is a 'standard shaft'? R300? Most people will be just fine with standard clubs and shafts unless you have a real slow like a lot of ladies or you swing like a crazed mad man on speed.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with these. I've had a set of the Original Blades for about 10 years now, they suit my game down to the ground, if a little short (lofts seem 1 club below most irons, so my 7 iron has the same loft as most people's 8), but I can't help wonder if things have moved on a bit.
Not sure I could cope with the 6.5 shafts though! I had one in a Titleist 975D (Rifle Shaft), and that was fairly strong. Currently using S400's, but am going to look at something stiffer when I finally upgrade.
Will you stick with DG? Stiffer than S400 kinda puts you into X100 range which are pretty comparable to 6.5's I think. Not sure I could cope with the 6.5 shafts though! I get a noticeably higher ball flight with PX versus my old S300's (which were too soft for me), worth trying back to back if you can get a demo head with interchangeable shafts.
The original Nike blades are gorgeous, so clean and simple, I had the Pro Combo set of those, my kid brother uses them now.

Played the Belfry (Brabazon yesterday and the Derby today), brutal greens but loved the courses, took part in the 10th Challenge to drive the green, stuck it pin high but a little to left and plop, made a birdie on there under normal play though.
looks great hoping to play there next year

Not particularly set on either DG's or PX's if I'm honest when it comes to change. Plan is to find a Nike fitting centre and go down and try a few. Will probably be next season now, and will have to be something pretty special to move on from the blades, as they are, as you say, gorgeous. Not just in looks but the feel of the things as well. In fact I think I'm talking myself into keeping them and spending the £700 elsewhere now.....
10th hole challenge now been uploaded, if you make it full screen at the end just see my ball pitch by the green to the left and roll into the water lol :-(

Bit of a newbie question coming up...
Ive got a cheap and cheerful Wilson driver, the only driver ive ever had, and seem to be hitting ok apart from a shocking right slice (so not hitting it ok really!) Id say its about 50/50 regarding how many go straight/sliced.
I havent had my club head speed measured but would be confident its erring on the faster side of things. Iv tried many remedies such as slowing my swing down, different ball position, different swing angles etc and while many of these seem to improve things slightly as soon as i go above, say, 70% power the slice kicks in.
The shaft on it is very flexible and sometimes almost feels as if its playing catch up with my swing.
I can play all my other clubs with relative ease i.e no slices, but dont swing them as fast as i would my driver.
So my question is would the flex in the shaft be a contributing factor to the slice?

If your a new player its probably down to your grip, stance or swing. Could be alsorts of stuff tbh.
A lot of people slice it with a driver when they first start playing. I had a wild one
Your probably better asking someone you know to have a look at what your doing, or if you dont know anyone suitable go for a lesson.

MLH - i agree 100% with Theshrew. Don't spend your money on a new shaft/equipment. Get yourself a few lessons & improve that way. you'll swing a £300 club just as well or as badly as a £30 club.
When i first started i spent way too much money on equipment & wish someone had said the same to me about lessons!
I've personally had 6 in total over the last 2 years of playing and have gone from struggling to break 100 every time to consistently breaking 85 & have a few rounds in the 70s! There's no way a new driver or a new set of irons would of resulted in such a drastic improvement.

Great stuff kentlad, this advice should be hammered into every beginner/High Handicapper in the land When i first started i spent way too much money on equipment & wish someone had said the same to me about lessons!

Thanks, it's what i would do if i could turn back the clock! Hindsight is a wonderful thing afterall!
On an unrelated gloat...i managed my first eagle on Saturday just gone. stonking 310 yard drive (albeit down hill with a healthy bounce) followed by a 155 yard 9 iron, this time back uphill...to set up a 20ft downhill left to right swinging putt that i holed...just a shame that was the only thing outside 2ft that i holed all day. Still, managed 3 over on the back which did nothing but annoy me as the front was horrendous in comparison with 3 doubles in 3 holes...consistency is the key to golf...shame its probably the hardest part to master!
